Eating attitudes, weight concerns and beliefs about drug effects in women who use ecstasy.

The drug ecstasy has appetite suppressant and exercise promoting effects that may appeal to young women who are concerned about weight and b … with frequency of ecstasy use. However there were no group differences in "drive for thinness" or "body dissatisfaction" which may suggest that differences on other factors are related more to use of club drugs than to any specific eating pathology. Ecstasy users were more likely than controls to agree that ecstasy aids weight loss and that they exercise more when th …

The ACAMTO study-impact of add-on osteopathic treatment on adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) mainly affects women (sex ratio 1/10) and most often starts during adolescence. The prognosis of AN remains poor (10% of deaths and high risk of chronicity). Body dissatisfaction, disturbances in recognition and identification of body sensations are some of the key symptoms of AN. However, there is a contrast between this consensual observation of body image disorders in AN, and the relative deficit of specifically targeted body treatments. Our proposal for a body approach specifically dedicated to AN is based on the understanding that posture, breathing, musc…

Understanding Re-operation in orthognathic surgery: A 17-year retrospective study analyzing causes and rates.

Orthognathic surgery is a standard procedure for correcting dentofacial deformities. While it generally yields satisfactory results, complications and re-operations can occur. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze the reasons for the re-operation of patients who previously underwent orthognathic surgery and evaluate the procedures in the second and third surgeries. The patients who underwent orthognathic surgery at Erciyes University between June 2006 and September 2023 were included. The primary outcomes were the reasons for re-operation, and the secondary outcomes were the

Autonomic Dysfunction in Sleep Disorders: From Neurobiological Basis to Potential Therapeutic Approaches.

Sleep disorder has been portrayed as merely a common dissatisfaction with sleep quality and quantity. However, sleep disorder is actually a medical condition characterized by inconsistent sleep patterns that interfere with emotional dynamics, cognitive functioning, and even physical performance. This is consistent with sleep abnormalities being more common in patients with autonomic dysfunction than in the general population. The autonomic nervous system coordinates various visceral functions ranging from respiration to neuroendocrine secretion in order to maintain homeostasis of the body. Bec

Is set-shifting a risk factor for anorexia nervosa or a broader range of disordered eating?

Steegers et al. using data from the Generation R cohort study examined whether set-shifting difficulties at age 4 predict body dissatisfaction, weight status, and restrictive eating at age 9 as a way to examine whether cognitive rigidity was a risk factor for an eating disorder. The authors concluded that set-shifting difficulties problems were predictive of features of anorexia nervosa. An alternative interpretation is that set shifting is predictive of large weight changes and eating behaviors more generally. It is not clear that set-shifting predicts becoming underweight. Set shifting appea…

Comparison of pain catastrophizing and anxiety in patients with dyspareunia and healthy women: a cross-sectional study.

Despite the prominent role of cognitive-affective variables, such as pain catastrophizing and anxiety in chronic pain, little is known about their relationship with dyspareunia. This study compared pain-catastrophizing and anxiety in reproductive-aged women with and without dyspareunia. A controlled cross-sectional study was conducted on 398 married women in Iran selected by convenience sampling. Sampling was performed both online and in person. Data were collected using a checklist designed for the study, including background characteristics, self-reported dyspareunia, and two standard questi

Eating Disorder Symptomatology in Adolescent Boys and Girls: Identifying Distinct Developmental Trajectory Classes.

Eating disorder symptomatology is highly prevalent in adolescence and is regarded one of the most important precursors of clinical eating di … ajectories and to identify latent trajectory classes. Stable trajectories of drive for thinness and body dissatisfaction were found, whereas bulimia and BMI increased over time. Important gender differences pointed to girls experiencing more eating disorder symptoms at each time point. Additionally, more diverse trajectory classes were found in girls than in boys. Fin …

The impact of genital self-image on sexual function: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Genital self-image (GSI) refers to a person's perception of their genitalia, whether positive or negative. Body Image and Body Avoidance Nine Years After Bariatric Surgery and Conventional Weight Loss Treatment.

Recently, there has been an increasing focus on body image dissatisfaction (BID), both as a motivational factor for seeking bariatric surgery and as a factor influencing weight loss outcome after surgery. Although associations have been reported between BID, emotional distress and successful weight loss, conclusions are limited due to methodological issues such as non-weight-specific assessment tools for body image and neglect of behavioral components (e.g. body avoidance, BA). The present study seeks to report on BID and BA 9 years after bariatric surgery using a cross-sectional data set from

Exploring self-compassion among men seeking weight loss: a thematic analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Self-compassion (SC) is associated with reduced eating disorder pathology, body dissatisfaction, and weight concerns, but most SC interventions and research samples focus on women. Because men often face unique challenges related to weight stigma and masculine norms, SC may be especially valuable in supporting emotion-regulation in health coaching programs. Little is known about how adult men engaged in weight loss interpret and experience SC, limiting the reach of interventions intended to support sustainable health behavior change. As such, the purpose of this study was to qual…

Personality Traits and Risk of Eating Disorders in Men: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Eating disorders (EDs) have been understudied and misunderstood in men. As for body dissatisfaction, the main predictor variables were neuroticism and, in a negative sense, extraversion and openness to experience. Sexual function of transgender women after gender affirming surgery: A mini review.

A transgender person has a gender identity opposite to the sex assigned at birth. Transgender individuals may have altered sexual function (SF) due to psychosocial factors related to body image distortion, shame, and dissatisfaction with genital appearance, and these conditions can increase the risk of sexual dysfunction. This study aimed to characterize the SF of trans-women after gender affirming surgery (GAS). We reviewed the Pubmed database for studies published between January 2008 and December 2021. 17 studies were included, four were cross-sectional studies, one prospective study, four

Opioid dependency rehabilitation with the opioid maintenance treatment programme - a qualitative study from the clients' perspective.

BACKGROUND: Opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) is the most widely used treatment for opioid dependence. The opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) programme represents an opportunity for people who are opioid users to minimize the many negative health and societal outcomes associated with opioid use through meeting the physiological need of their bodies for opioids. The purpose of this study is to shed some light on how clients in the Norwegian OMT programme see their level of influence on their own treatment. METHOD: It is a qualitative enquiry using semi-structured interviews of seven OMT clien
