Preoperative Thyroid Autoimmune Status and Changes in Thyroid Function and Body Weight After Bariatric Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery has emerged as the most effective therapy for morbid obesity. There is increasing evidence that bariatric surgery could alleviate systemic inflammation and influence thyroid function. The current study aimed to investigate the associations of preoperative thyroid autoimmune status with the changes in body weight and thyroid function after bariatric surgery. METHODS: We recruited 101 patients with morbid obesity (44 men and 57 women) who received bariatric surgery at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University. Those who had used thyroid hormone replacement or antithyroi…

Genetic correlations between body weight, scrotal circumference and visual evaluation scores in Bos indicus cattle.

The objective was to estimate genetic correlations between body weight (BW), scrotal circumference and visual evaluation scores of body conformation measured at standard ages in Guzerat cattle. All measurements were performed at 205 (weaning age), 365, 450 and 550 days of age; for BW, two additional measurements (at birth and 120 days of age) were realized. The data utilized in this study were retrieved from a database of the Brazilian Association of Zebu Breeders that contained information of registered Guzerat animals born between 1970 and 2013. Genetic parameters were estimated in bi-trait …

Development of regression equations for estimating height and weight using body segments in Argentine children.

OBJECTIVES: Body weight and height measurements are essential in children for assessing growth and nutrition, for the calculation of medication doses, and for the effectiveness of medical interventions. When direct measurements cannot be made, segmental measures can be used to estimate weight and height. The equations available to estimate height and weight, however, are limited. The aim of this study was to use segmental measures to develop equations for use in pediatric clinical practice. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was used to collect data from 861 healthy children (484 females…

RANKL Reduces Body Weight and Food Intake via the Modulation of Hypothalamic NPY/CART Expression.

The receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) modulates energy metabolism. However, how RANKL regulates energy homeostasis is still not clear. This study aims to investigate the central mechanisms by which central administration of RANKL inhibits food intake and causes weight loss in mice. We carried out a systematic and in-depth analysis of the neuronal pathways by which RANKL mediates catabolic effects. After intracerebroventricle (i.c.v.) injection of RANKL, the expression of neuropeptide Y (NPY) mRNA in the Arc was significantly decreased, while the CART mRNA expression dramat

Hypoinsulinemic hypoglycemia triggered by liver injury in elderly subjects with low body weight: case reports.

UNLABELLED: Hypoglycemia is induced by many causes, especially over-dose of insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents in diabetic subjects. In such a case, hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia is usually observed. On the other hand, it is important to classify secondary hypoglycemia and hypoinsulinemic hypoglycemia. Liver injury-induced hypoglycemia is one of the causes of hypoinsulinemic hypoglycemia but rarely observed in clinical practice. Herein, we experienced similar 2 cases of non-diabetic hypoinsulinemic hypoglycemia. Both of them were elderly subjects with low body weight. Furthermore, it is likel…

Liraglutide Modulates Appetite and Body Weight Through Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Receptor-Expressing Glutamatergic Neurons.

Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists are U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved weight loss drugs. Despite their widespread use, the sites of action through which GLP-1R agonists (GLP1RAs) affect appetite and body weight are still not fully understood. We determined whether GLP-1Rs in either GABAergic or glutamatergic neurons are necessary for the short- and long-term effects of the GLP1RA liraglutide on food intake, visceral illness, body weight, and neural network activation. We found that mice lacking GLP-1Rs in vGAT-expressing GABAergic neurons responded identically to co…

Predicted body weight relationships for protective ventilation - unisex proposals from pre-term through to adult.

BACKGROUND: The lung-protective ventilation bundle has been shown to reduce mortality in adult acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This concept has expanded to other areas of acute adult ventilation and is recommended for pediatric ventilation. A component of lung-protective ventilation relies on a prediction of lean body weight from height. The predicted body weight (PBW) relationship employed in the ARDS Network trial is considered valid only for adults, with a dedicated formula required for each sex. No agreed PBW formula applies to smaller body sizes. This analysis investigated whe…

Usefulness of Baltasar's expected body mass index as an indicator of bariatric weight loss surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Determining the best indicator to report weight loss takes on special relevance following bariatric surgery. Our objective is to apply a method proposed by Baltasar et al. to express weight loss results following bariatric surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Anthropometric data were collected from 265 patients who had undergone Sleeve gastrectomy (SG, n = 172) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP, n = 93) with a 2-year follow-up period. Initial BMI was calculated as well as BMI 2 years after, percentage of excess BMI loss (PEBMIL), expected BMI (EBMI), and corrected PEBMIL. RESULTS:

Occurrence and Clinicopathologic Features of Splenic Neoplasia Based on Body Weight: 325 Dogs (2003-2013).

Medical records of 396 dogs undergoing splenectomy for treatment of a splenic mass or nodular disease were reviewed retrospectively. Overall distribution of histopathologic diagnosis and clinicopathologic features were evaluated for 325 dogs that met inclusion criteria. Dogs were dichotomized into two groups based on weight, with the statistically derived cutoff identified as 27.8 kg. Malignancy was diagnosed in 58% of dogs, with no difference between small (55%) and large (61%) dogs (P = .291). Overall, 32% of splenic masses were hemangiosarcoma (HSA), which comprised 25 and 39% of all masses

Pathogenic Features of Dysuria in Young Women with Secondary Amenorrhea Caused by Body Weight Loss.

We examined 11 women aged 19-26 years (mean age 22.5±3.5 years) with secondary amenorrhea complaining frequent urination over 1.5 years and repeatedly, but unsuccessful treated for overactive bladder and chronic cystitis. The rare cause of sustained urination disorders in young female patients of reproductive age was established: development of secondary amenorrhea caused by weight loss ("cosmetic" amenorrhea) with subsequent estrogene deficit and urogenital atrophy. Morphological examination of the bladder mucosa, an important clue to the diagnosis, helps to identify the true cause of dysuria

Helicobacter pylori infection can affect energy modulating hormones and body weight in germ free mice.

Helicobacter pylori, is an invariably commensal resident of the gut microbiome associated with gastric ulcer in adults. In addition, these patients also suffered from a low grade inflammation that activates the immune system and thus increased shunting of energy to host defense mechanisms. To assess whether a H. pylori infection could affect growth in early life, we determined the expression levels of selected metabolic gut hormones in germ free (GF) and specific pathogen-free (SPF) mice with and without the presence of H. pylori. Despite H. pylori-infected (SPFH) mice display alteration in ho

Outcome in body-contouring surgery after massive weight loss: A prospective matched single-blind study.

INTRODUCTION: Body-contouring (BC) procedures after massive weight loss (MWL) are extensive and numerous. Currently, inconsistent data exist regarding quality-of-life (QoL) scales, and long-term analysis is lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term outcome of patients who elect to have BC procedures after MWL. METHODS: Post-bariatric patients and patients who had dietary weight loss with no history of bariatric surgery (BS) (BC group) were included. Patients after BS with similar demographic characteristics but no BC procedures served as the control group (BS group). The

Estimating umbilical catheter insertion depth in newborns using weight or body measurement: a randomised trial.

OBJECTIVE: Incorrectly positioned umbilical venous and arterial catheters (UVC and UAC) are associated with increased rates of complications in newborns. Catheter insertion depth is often estimated using body surface measurement. We wished to determine whether estimating insertion depth of umbilical catheters using birth weight (BW), rather than surface measurements, results in more correctly positioned catheters. INTERVENTIONS/OUTCOME: Newborns were randomised to have UVC and UAC insertion depth estimated using formulae based on BW or using graphs based on shoulder-umbilicus length. The prim

Body mass index, weight change, and clinical progression in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer disease.

The speed and severity of clinical progression after Alzheimer disease (AD) diagnosis varies and depends on multiple factors, most not well elucidated. We assessed whether body mass index (BMI) and 1-year weight change (WC) are associated with clinical progression in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and early-stage AD. Longitudinal data comprising 2268 aMCI and 1506 AD participants in the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center's Uniform Data Set were used to examine nuances of clinical progression by BMI and WC, as well as potential variations in associations by age, sex, BMI (WC mo

Body size perception and weight control in youth: 9-year international trends from 24 countries.

OBJECTIVES: To examine 9-year trends and relationships regarding misperceptions of body size and dieting for weight loss among adolescents f … ze perceptions among adolescents may have changed over time concurrent with shifts in country-level body weight. However, controlling for country-level overweight prevalence did not impact trends in dieting for weight loss, suggesting a potentially stronger impact of social comparison on weight-related perceptions than on behavior.

Effects of prepubertal-onset exercise on body weight changes up to middle age in rats.

The present study was conducted to examine whether prepubertal-onset exercise might help adults maintain long-term body weight (BW) reduction and increased energy metabolism after the cessation of exercise. Furthermore, the effects of the exercise regimen were compared with those of food restriction. Twenty-three male obese-diabetic [Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF)] rats were randomly assigned to prepubertal-onset exercise (Childhood-Ex), food restriction (Childhood-Diet), and sedentary control (OLETF-Sed) groups. Childhood-Ex rats exercised voluntarily every day using a rotating whe…

[Influence of body weight on the prognosis of breast cancer survivors; nutritional approach after diagnosis].

Obesity combined with breast cancer is a public health problem, given the high incidence and prevalence of both diseases. The aim of this review is to determine the current status of research on the relationship between the body weight of breast cancer patients and their prognosis. Overweight and obesity at the time of diagnosis are associated with a worse prognosis in breast cancer survivors. Observational studies show that breast cancer mortality is 33% higher in obese than in non-obese survivors. Furthermore, weight gain after diagnosis is common in these patients and is even greater in tho…
