Mechanisms of action of peripherally administered cholecystokinin octapeptide on brain stem neurons in the rat.

We have investigated the pathway and the mechanism by which cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8), given systemically, may influence the discharge of brain stem neurons that have an input from the stomach. Extracellular recordings were made from neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), where vagal afferents terminate, and from neighboring regions of the dorsal medial medulla. Gastric distension and CCK-8 injected intra-aortically close to the stomach evoked either excitatory or inhibitory responses that were abolished by cervical vagal section. In animals from which the celiac/superio…

The effect of intracerebral hematoma location on the risk of brain-stem compression and on clinical outcome.

The clinical findings and computerized tomography (CT) brain scans of 45 patients with supratentorial intracerebral hematomas were evaluated to determine the effect of hematoma location on the clinical course and outcome of the disease. The lesions were frontal in 18 patients, temporal or temporoparietal in 17, and parieto-occipital in 10. No patient with a frontal or parieto-occipital hematoma had clinical signs of transtentorial herniation at admission or subsequently, whereas seven (41%) of those with temporal or temporoparietal lesions had signs of herniation (p less than 0.05); three of t

Acute direct and indirect lesions of the brain stem--CT findings and their clinical evaluation.

Since the introduction of computer tomography (CT) (Ambrose 1973, Hounsfield 1973) it has become an essential instrument in the diagnosis of … ment of the patients, and even some new indications for operation. Analysis of the acute hyperdense brain stem lesions--pathognomonic for haemorrhages--allows for the first time the diagnosis and continuous observation of traumatic and secondary haemorrhages caused by raised pressure, as well as spontaneous ones. As regards the mortality and morbidity, the r …

[Ultrastructural aspects of the secondary brain stem syndrome in hemorrhages and infarcts in the cerebral hemispheres].

Ultrastructural aspects of the secondary brain stem syndrome in patients with hemorrhages and infarcts in the brain hemispheres are considered. The secondary brain stem syndrome is manifested by diverse clinical symptomatology suggestive of dysfunction of different levels of the brain stem: a diminished level of awakening, oculomotor disturbances, changes in the muscle tone and reflexes, cardiorespiratory and other vegetative disorders. Examining the reticular formation of the brain stem under the electron microscope the authors revealed changes in neurons in the form of chromatolysis, an incr…

[Neuropsychological manifestations of secondary brain stem dysfunction in patients with strokes of hemispheric localization].

A neuropsychological investigation of 35 patients who had suffered cerebral strokes of hemispheric localization aggravated by secondary dysfunctions of the upper portions of the cerebral trunk was carried out. Neuropsychological examination was supplemented with emotional stimulation methods aimed at detecting superior trunk impairments. The neuropsychological signs of trunk dysfunction are discussed. Even in a favourable course of the stroke, the manifestations of secondary trunk dysfunctions tended to last 2-4 weeks and were more severe in patients with an unsatisfactory somatic state. The a

[Laterofacial malformations (maxillomandibular neurocristopathies) associated with anomalies of the brain stem and cranial nerves].

Neurological and cerebral computed tomography examinations were conducted in 25 infants and young children with uni- or bilateral maxillomandibular neurocristopathies (Goldenhar's, Franceschetti's first arch syndromes or transient forms). Taking all lesions into account, 18 children (82%) presented morphological and motor anomalies of the brain stem (mesencephalus, metencephalus) and its corresponding cranial nerves: four had morphological anomalies of the cerebellum and pons; four presented disorders of bulbopontine control (heart, lungs, deglutition); fifteen demonstrated sensory, sensorial,…

Evaluation and graduation of brain stem auditory evoked potentials in patients with neurological diseases.

Based on normative data from 40 subjects, criteria for evaluating brain stem auditory evoked potentials have been elaborated. This system contained six grades from normal to diffusely abnormal, and was used in evaluating recordings from 142 patients, including 38 patients with definite and 48 with probable and possible multiple sclerosis, 18 patients with brain stem infarctions, six patients with other organic brain stem lesions, six patients with a postcommotional syndrome and 26 patients without any brain stem involvement. A statistically significant difference was found between normal perso…

Catecholamine synthesizing enzymes in brain stem and hypothalamus during the development of renovascular hypertension.

The activities of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PNMT) have been measured in brain stem and hypothalamic nuclei during the development of renovascular hypertension. TH activity fell at 72 h in the posterior hypothalamic and peri- and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus, but had returned to control levels by 7 days. PNMT activity was raised in the nucleus of the solitary tract at 7 days and was also elevated in the nucleus of the solitary tract, parahypoglossal nucleus, locus coeruleus and cerebellar cortex at 4 weeks. No change in PNMT was noted in…

Topoisomerase IIα-mediated stemness response in reactive astrocytes to traumatic brain injury.

Rationale: As a highly plastic population, parenchymal astrocytes have demonstrated the capacity to become activated and recapitulate neurogenic potential in response to traumatic central nervous system (CNS) injuries, representing a latent reservoir for neuronal regeneration in non-neurogenic brain regions. However, the extrinsic and intrinsic factors regulating this process remain poorly characterized. Elucidating these molecular mechanisms is crucial to harnessing the regenerative potential of reactive astrocytes in CNS repair. Methods: A multidisciplinary approach combining immunostaining,

Dorsally exophytic brain stem ganglioglioma extending to the foramen of Luschka: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Gangliogliomas are rare tumors primarily arising from the central nervous system, mostly in the temporal lobes, with brain stem involvement being particularly infrequent. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported instance of a brainstem ganglioglioma exhibiting an extension to foramen of Luschka. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique case of ganglioglioma of the brainstem. 23-year-old Turkish patient presented with flashing lights in the peripheral visual fields. Imaging studies revealed a distinct mass lesion adjacent to the brainstem, demonstrating an unusual exo…

The roles, mechanism, and mobilization strategy of endogenous neural stem cells in brain injury.

Brain injury poses a heavy disease burden in the world, resulting in chronic deficits. Therapies for brain injuries have been focused on pharmacologic, small molecule, endocrine and cell-based therapies. Endogenous neural stem cells (eNSCs) are a group of stem cells which can be activated in vivo by damage, neurotrophic factors, physical factor stimulation, and physical exercise. The activated eNSCs can proliferate, migrate and differentiate into neuron, oligodendrocyte and astrocyte, and play an important role in brain injury repair and neural plasticity. The roles of eNSCs in the repair of b

Ability to regulate immunity of mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is characterized by broad clinical symptoms in brain insult by external damages to the skull. TBI potentially leads to severe physical, cognitive, and emotional impairment. The complex biochemical reactions of inflammatory processes in TBI significantly influence brain function and clinical sequelae's overall severity. Mesenchymal stem cell therapy has become a promising therapeutic field of treatment for serious injuries due to its ability to regulate the inflammatory microenvironment. In this study, we aimed to investigate MSC's anti-inflammatory ability through
