The uncommon bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia can be idiopathic or caused by infection or medications. We report a 5 year old boy with pericardial sarcoma that was treated with chemotherapy (vincristine, doxorubicin, etoposide, cyclophosphamide) and radiotherapy. During the third cycle of chemotherapy, he developed progressive cough and dyspnea, needing oxygen therapy. Chest X-ray examination showed bilateral infiltrates. After discarding infectious etiologies, an open lung biopsy was performed, and the pathological examination showed a bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumoni

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus is one of the major causes of hospitalization in young children, especially during the winter. Recent evidence has shown that pharmacological treatment, especially nebulized epinephrine, in addition to the traditional supportive treatment, can alleviate symptoms and shorten hospitalization, but this approach is not yet widespread.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the management of bronchiolitis in Israel is moving toward a stronger emphasis on pharmacological care.
METHODS: A questionnaire on the diagnosis and management of bron

UNLABELLED: To study the variation in management of acute bronchiolitis in the Netherlands, a questionnaire on the use of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and prescription of drugs after discharge was mailed to all 110 hospital-based paediatric practices in the Netherlands. A 100% response rate was achieved. There was a great deal of variation in management of bronchiolitis between respondents. The most commonly applied diagnostic procedures were immunofluorescence staining of nasopharyngeal secretions for respiratory syncytial virus (100% of respondents), blood gas analysis (93%), leucoc

INTRODUCTION: Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) is characterized by plugs of granulation tissue in bronchioles, alveolar ducts and alveoli. This pulmonary disorder has been reported in some cases in relation to drug consumption (D-penicillamine, amiodarone), with bacterial or viral infections (Mycoplasma pneumoniae, HIV), and with systemic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. To our knowledge, only three cases of association BOOP-Sjögren's syndrome have been reported.
EXEGESIS: We report three new cases of BOOP. These patients presented a primary Sjögren's syndrome witho…

Corticosteroids continue to be used by many physicians to treat infants with bronchiolitis. The aim of this study was to examine the short-term and long-term efficacy of oral corticosteroid therapy when added to beta2-agonists in infants with mild to moderate bronchiolitis (defined as the first episode of wheezing associated with low grade fever, rhinitis, tachypnea, and increased respiratory effort in a previously healthy infant during the winter months). Infants with mild to moderate bronchiolitis, were randomly assigned to receive either oral prednisone (2 mg/kg/day) or placebo for 3 days.

The object of the study was to assess the levels of circulating forms of the cellular adhesion molecules ICAM-1, VCAM-1, E-selectin, L-selectin and P-selectin in young children with asthma and acute bronchiolitis. Thirty-nine children aged 12 to 84 months with mild or moderate asthma were studied at admission for acute asthma (n = 15) or in a stable phase (n = 24). Ten of the children with acute asthma were seen again after one month. Twenty-two children aged 1 to 17 months with acute bronchiolitis and nine non-atopic controls were also included in the study. In children with acute asthma, the

A prospective 4-month follow-up of children hospitalized with bronchiolitis revealed that high concentrations of eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) in nasopharyngeal aspirates (NPA) are predictive of wheezing after bronchiolitis. In the 29 patients who received no anti-inflammatory therapy the median concentration of NPA ECP was 882 ng/g in those with physician-diagnosed wheezing (P = 0.02). The NPA ECP concentration of the whole study group of 88 children with and without subsequent hospital admissions for wheezing were 531 and 299 ng/g, respectively (P = 0.02). At entry the children with nega

A 37-year-old male non-smoker developed rapidly severe respiratory disease after a 3-hour exposure to hydrobromic acid fumes. An upper airway syndrome ensued with anosmia and aphonia as well as non-specific bronchial hyperreactivity, obstructive bronchiolitis (which led to a persistent respiratory volume of about 20% of the normal level with exercise-induced dyspnea) and obstructive bronchiolitis. Lung transplantation is currently being considered. When inhaled at irritant concentrations, certain toxic gases, such as chlorine, can lead to reflex apnea via laryngeal nerve reaction, limiting gas

OBJECTIVE: To show the CT findings of bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) associated with rheumatoid arthritis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used high-resolution CT (HRCT) and dynamic expiratory cine CT to evaluate two patients with rheumatoid arthritis and a clinical diagnosis of BO. Both had pulmonary function tests to correlate with the radiographic findings.
RESULTS: High-resolution CT showed bronchiectasis and mosaic perfusion in both patients. Expiratory CT showed multiple scattered areas of air trapping consistent with small airway obstruction. Imaging findings correlated with pulmonary functi

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) plays an important role in acute bronchiolitis, which is life threatening in some infants. We investigated the epidemiology of RSV acute bronchiolitis in children less than 3 years old in northern Japan. From April 1991 to March 1993, 162 infants with acute bronchiolitis were hospitalized in our pediatric wards. The diagnosis of RSV acute bronchiolitis was based on the typical clinical manifestations and the presence of RSV antigen in their nasopharyngeal specimens or the rise of the RSV antibody titer. 124 out of 162 patients (76.5%) were diagnosed as having

We measured changes with growth in lung function and airway reactivity after acute canine parainfluenza virus type 2 (CPI2, n = 5), canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV2, n = 7), and sequential CAV2-CPI2 (n = 6) infections or no infection (controls, n = 6) in beagle puppies (age approximately 79 days). In the CPI2 and CAV2 groups, a lower respiratory illness developed by day 3 postinfection with clinical recovery by day 14. In the CAV2-CPI2 group, puppies were inoculated initially with CAV2 and 12 days later with CPI2. In this group, illness persisted until day 14 after infection with CPI2. Lung resi

The authors report three cases of bronchiolitis obliterans occurring during treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with D-penicillamine after 4, 6 and 8 months of treatment and when the rheumatoid arthritis was in a state of remission. None of these patients (2 sero-positive and 1 sero-negative) present any past history of pulmonary or bronchial disease. The daily dosage of D-penicillamine never exceeded 600 mg. High dose corticosteroid therapy was unable to improve the clinical signs or the respiratory function tests, which were severely disturbed. After 15 months to 3 years, the respiratory signs

Concern about the long-term sequelae of bronchiolitis has been raised through studies of children hospitalized for bronchiolitis, but the long-term sequelae of mild bronchiolitis have not been studied. We assessed the hypothesis that 25 children with mild bronchiolitis (index subjects) were at greater risk for abnormalities of pulmonary function or airway reactivity to cold air between the ages of 8 and 12 years than were randomly selected, matched controls. There were no consistent differences in pulmonary function or airway reactivity between index and control groups. Airway hyperreactivity

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), a severe complication following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), presents as chronic graft-versus-host disease characterized by inflammation and fibrosis of the small airway epithelium. This progressive fibrosis obstructs bronchiolar airways, leading to respiratory distress in patients. Due to the lack of effective treatments, a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms is crucial. This study explored the molecular mechanisms underlying the abnormal glycosylation regulation in BOS, aiming to provide new

INTRODUCTION: Bronchiolitis is the leading cause of infant hospitalizations worldwide, primarily driven by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
METHODS: This multicenter retrospective comparative study assessed the impact of immunoprophylaxis with nirsevimab against RSV on bronchiolitis-related hospitalizations in Italy during the 2024-2025 winter season.
RESULTS: Data from nine Italian hospitals showed a substantial 48% decrease in bronchiolitis admissions compared to the previous season (438 vs. 832 admissions). Among hospitalized infants, only 23% had received immunoprophylaxis. RSV positiv

OBJECTIVES: No guidelines exist for managing children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) hospitalized with acute bronchiolitis. This study evaluated clinical practice and outcomes associated with systemic steroid use in children with BPD and acute bronchiolitis. We hypothesized there would be significant practice variation and improvement in outcomes with steroid use.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted using the PHIS (Pediatric Health Information System) database. Children aged younger than 2 years with BPD hospitalized from 2012 to 2023 were included. Primary outcomes were syste

OBJECTIVE: Bronchiolitis is a major cause of respiratory illness in infants. Few studies have demonstrated arrhythmias during bronchiolitis, including bradycardia and atrioventricular block, some requiring pacemaker implantation. However, the association between bronchiolitis and cardiac arrhythmias remains unclear. In this work we sought to investigate the incidence and characteristics of arrhythmias during bronchiolitis in infants younger than 1 year of age.
STUDY DESIGN: A single-center, prospective cohort study was conducted on infants hospitalized with a clinical diagnosis of bronchiolit
