Nodular lymphoid lesion (NLL) of the liver is a rare but unique entity and has also been termed reactive lymphoid hyperplasia of the liver. We describe the histological, immunohistochemical and molecular biologic findings of a case with NLL and two other tumors of the liver. The nodular lymphoid mass found in the liver was composed of heterogeneous small lymphocytes forming reactive follicles. Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is an aggressive lymphoma with accepted risk factors such as proliferation markers. A lymphocytic enterocolitis has been reported in a cohort of children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. BACKGROUND: The spectrum of mycosis fungoides is exceedingly broad. Many different variants have been described, based on both clinical appearance and histological pattern. A rare form which shows preferential infiltration of hair follicles by malignant lymphocytes is follicular mycosis fungoides.

An 11-year-old neutered female Irish setter was presented with a six-week history of blepharoconjunctivitis affecting the right eye. A conjunctival biopsy was taken and histopathological examination revealed a heavy cellular infiltrate involving the epithelial and subepithelial tissues. Immunohistochemical staining showed the intraepithelial cell population to uniformly have the phenotype CD3 (T-cell specific marker). A diagnosis of epitheliotropic lymphoma (mycosis fungoides) was made. The use of a synthetic retinoid and topical prednisolone in the management of the case is discussed.

The efficacy of thalidomide (alpha-phthalimido-glutarimide) therapy in leprosy patients with erythema nodosum leprosum is thought to be due to inhibition of tumor necrosis factor alpha. In other diseases reported to respond to thalidomide, the mechanism of action of the drug is unclear. We show that thalidomide is a potent costimulator of primary human T cells in vitro, synergizing with stimulation via the T cell receptor complex to increase interleukin 2-mediated T cell proliferation and interferon gamma production. The costimulatory effect is greater on the CD8+ than the CD4+ T cell subset.

Severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mice have become a promising tool for the development of models of human immunologic process.
