Interventional catheterization is an alternative to surgery for some congenital heart defects. For other malformations, the surgeon and the interventionist will join in an effort to obtain an optimal result: the typical example is pulmonary atresia with VSD and aortopulmonary collaterals. In other cases, the cardiologist may be called upon to intervene with catheter techniques to correct sequelae or residual lesions after surgical correction, avoiding redo surgery. Although rare, retinal artery cholesterol emboli (Hollenhorst plaques) post angioplasty can be a severe event that can cause irreversible visual disturbances, usually taking place during or following the procedure. We report a 10-year-old girl who developed persistent hoarseness after stent placement for the treatment of left pulmonary artery stenosis. Laryngoscopy performed 21 months after stent placement revealed left vocal cord paralysis, presumed secondary to compression of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve by the stent. Pediatric cardiologists should be reminded of this possible rare complication after stent placement.
