BACKGROUND: Bats are regarded as the primary (ancestral) hosts of bugs of the family Cimicidae. The historically and economically most important species in the family is the common bedbug (Cimex lectularius), because of its worldwide occurrence and association with humans. This molecular-phylogenetic study was initiated in order to expand the knowledge on the phylogeny of cimicid bugs of bats, by investigating samples from Hungary, Romania (representing central-eastern Europe) and two further countries (South Africa and Vietnam).
RESULTS: Altogether 216 cimicid bugs were collected (73 Ci. lec

INTRODUCTION: Facial pain is often debilitating and can be characterized by a sharp, stabbing, burning, aching, and dysesthetic sensation. Specifically, trigeminal neuropathic pain (TNP), anesthesia dolorosa, and persistent idiopathic facial pain (PIFP) are difficult diseases to treat, can be quite debilitating and an effective, enduring treatment remains elusive.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed our early experience with stimulation involving the trigeminal and sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation for TNP, anesthesia dolorosa, and PIFP between 2010-2014 to assess the feasibility of implan

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Biscutella laevigata is a facultative thallium hyperaccumulator, with hyperaccumulating populations known from Les Malines (France) and Cave del Predil (Italy) which are diploid and tetraploid respectively.
METHODS: Biscutella laevigata was grown hydroponically and treated with 5 µM thallium. Elemental concentrations were determined with monochromatic X-ray fluorescence (MXRF) analysis. Synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microtomography was used to elucidate elemental distribution at the cellular level in plant organs.
KEY RESULTS: Thallium treatment resulted in shoot concen

Microorganisms can induce biomineralization of inorganic ions to form a lipophobic layer on the surface of cave rocks. Mimicking this, we developed and propose a protocol that produces a highly lipophobic hybrid layer of CaCO3 nanoparticles on hydrogel surfaces. This lipophobic layer endows hydrogels with an oil contact angle of 162°, causing oil droplets placed on the surface to bead up and roll off immediately. The lipophobic surface effectively resists staining from lipophilic dyes, and does not adhere to double-sided tapes. A lipophobic layer on hydrogel tubes effectively prevents the adhe

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a common cause of craniofacial pain. The retrosigmoid approach is usually used to treat TN, but no cases of endoscopic far-lateral supracerebellar infratentorial approach (EF-SCITA) were used to undergo operation for TN.
CASE PRESENTATION: Two patients were presented with severe facial pain and preliminary diagnosis was TN. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging revealed that a superior cerebellar artery (SCA) compressed the trigeminal nerve in case 1, and a tumor located in the petrous apex extending into the Meckel's cave compressed the trigeminal n

Duplication of the vermiform appendix is a rare anomaly observed in patients undergoing appendectomy. A 27-month-old male toddler presented with a 9-day history of abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, progressing to an acute abdomen with signs of severe peritonitis. Intraoperative findings revealed a periappendicular infiltrate from a perforated vermiform appendix of the tenia coli type. A second, inflamed appendix was incidentally discovered in its typical location during the procedure. Vermiform appendix duplication presents a clinical challenge due to its rarity and potential for complic

The ongoing outbreak of Marburg virus disease in Rwanda marks the third largest historically, although it has shown the lowest fatality rate. Genomic analysis of samples from 18 cases identified a lineage with limited internal diversity, closely related to a 2014 Ugandan case. Our findings suggest that the Rwandan lineage diverged decades ago from a common ancestor shared with diversity sampled from bats in Uganda. Our genomic data reveal limited genetic variation, consistent with a single zoonotic transmission event and limited human-to-human transmission. Investigations including contact tra

As a minimally invasive treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) has become increasingly popular worldwide. Because it is simple and straightforward, it does not need a complicated apparatus only a fluoroscope plus an operator's experience. Therefore, the surgical technique seems to be essential and worth further addressing. The paper stresses that the target of PBC should be the semilunar ganglion (the soma of neurons) rather than the rootlets (axons) because the latter is renewable. To obtain a sufficient pressure against the ganglion, Meckel's cave should be

BACKGROUND: Paraclinoid aneurysms, especially when they are large, can be quite difficult to treat, both endovascularly and through microsurgical clip reconstruction. There are many possibilities to approach this region surgically, and most hinge on total or partial removal of the anterior clinoid process. Gaining proximal control may be a challenge when space is limited, which is why Parkinson's triangle may be a viable alternative in some cases.
METHODS: We describe in a stepwise fashion the steps used to reconstruct a very large paraclinoid aneurysm. We first attempted to gain proximal con

INTRODUCTION: Hemangiomas are common hepatic lesions and are mostly asymptomatic. Operative removal should only be performed when the lesions are symptomatic, and removal of the hemangioma is deemed to be more beneficial than the risk of the operation itself.
PRESENTATION OF THE CASE: The multiple hemangiomas of our patient were discovered nine years before first symptoms. The patient presented with pulmonary artery embolism due to a compression of the vena cava inferior by a hemangioma in segment I. No other cause of thromboembolic events could be diagnosed. We performed surgical enucleation

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the current literature on the extended middle cranial fossa (xMCF) approach and to provide a comprehensive description of the relevant anatomy, indications, surgical technique, results, and complications.
RECENT FINDINGS: The xMCF approach expands the surgical exposure provided by the sMCF approach, allowing access to the internal auditory canal, cerebellopontine angle, prepontine cistern, anterior petrous apex, petrous carotid artery, Meckel's cave, cavernous sinus, mid and upper clivus, and posterior lesions approaching the jugular foramen. Preservation of servi

The authors describe the surgical anatomy for the endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) to the ventrolateral skull base. The ventrolateral skull base can be divided into two segments: the upper lateral and lower lateral skull base. The upper lateral skull base includes the cavernous sinus and the orbit, while the lower lateral skull base includes the petrous apex, Meckel's cave, parapharyngeal space, infratemporal fossa, etc. To gain access to the upper lateral skull base, a simple opening of the ethmoid sinus provides sufficient exposure of this area. To reach the lower lateral skull base, a tr

An M1 tooth of Asian black bear (Ursus (Euarctos) thibetanus G. Cuvier, 1823) was found in deposits of the Tetyukhinskaya cave (Middle Sikhote-Alin, 44°35'N, 135°36'E). This finding is the first reliable evidence of Asian black bear's presence in Pleistocene of Primorye. Its morphological and morphometric descriptions are given. The period of inhabitation of U. (E.) thibetanus determined based on the radiocarbon date obtained during the study of the tooth, is 39 874 ± 133 BP (NSK-850, UGAMS-21786), which corresponds to the middle of Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) of Late Pleistocene. Appendiceal pneumatosis is rare, reported either in the context of acute appendicitis or enterocolitis. Here, we report the case of an elderly adult in whom the acute appendicitis was associated with pneumatosis and occurred in the context of a malformed appendix with pathogenic organism remnants. A 72-year-old man presented with abdominal pain 3 weeks after posttraumatic dorsolumbar surgery. The computed tomography scan showed acute appendicitis and 2 diverticula. On microscopy, the appendix showed acute appendicitis along with a Cave-Wallbridge type A duplication. In addition, several optica

We present an unusual case of a metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) mimicking trigeminal schwannoma. The patient, with no prior history of RCC, presented with clinical symptoms and imaging consistent with trigeminal neuralgia secondary to trigeminal schwannoma. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a large bilobed cystic/solid mass primarily in the cerebellopontine angle cistern, with extension into the left middle cranial fossa, Meckel cave, and left cavernous sinus. Following surgical excision, histopathology revealed the tumor to be an RCC infiltrating into the trigeminal nerve f

In this study, the case of a 58-year-old man with a 2-month history of left chin paresthesia with difficulty swallowing and chewing, and dysphonia is reported. He had an absence of the gag reflex, unilateral palatal palsy and deviation of the tongue upon attempted protrusion with unilateral atrophy. Magnetic resonance imaging of the skull base revealed a tumoral infiltration of the left side of Meckel's cave, involvement of the clivus with extension into the cavernous sinus and signs of focal leptomeningeal infiltration. The patient was eventually diagnosed with generalized Burkitt's lymphoma.

This study describes an outbreak of rabies in a flock of 110 sheep in Yangqu county, Shanxi province, China, in 2010. The flock, housed in a cave being used as a sheepfold, was attacked by a rabid dog, which resulted in 36 deaths over the following 2 days from the crushing and trampling caused by panic, and some 15 further deaths from rabies 2 weeks later. Rabies in the sheep was confirmed by the fluorescent antibody test (FAT) and RT-PCR. Rabies virus was isolated from the index dog brain and its N gene was partially sequenced (nucleotides 77-880). Results showed that the canine isolate (SXTY

The Fosse Ardeatine massacre was a mass execution carried out in Rome on March 24, 1944 by Nazi German occupation troops during the Second World War as a reprisal for a partisan attack conducted on the previous day in central Rome. The 335 civilians were taken to the "Cave Ardeatine" and they were shot. Only 323 corpses out of 335 have been identified. The aim of this work is the genetic and anthropological analysis of the remains exhumed from grave number 329 of Fosse Ardeatine's Shrine to assess their identity. So far, such remains have been supposed to belong to MM but mitochondrial analysi

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to describe a rare case of a trigeminal schwannoma in a child and the surgical procedure performed for therapy.
PATIENT AND METHODS: A 6-year-old girl presented with tiredness, dysarthric speech and cerebellar symptoms. Imaging studies revealed a unilateral dumbbell-shaped tumour, extending into both the middle and posterior fossa, centred over Meckel's cave. One-stage surgery was performed by pterional craniotomy. The tumour was first debulked in the middle fossa, then peeled from the wall of the cavernous sinus, followed by extirpation of the tumour from the pos
