[Consequences for children involved in a road traffic accident: one year of observation and follow-up in the Rhone county].

Children aged 6 to 11 who have been injured in a traffic accident were observed over a one year period, in parallel with a control group of children. More than one-third of the injured children had been hospitalized (for periods ranging anywhere between 1 and 47 days). One year later, one injured child out of ten was still suffering from pain, and/or still being treated for injuries resulting from the accident. Many other factors were linked to the initial overall level of severity of the injuries, contrary to that of pain, such as the rate and duration of hospitalization, the duration of care

Separation anxiety as a mediator between acute morphine administration and PTSD symptoms in injured children.

Emerging evidence suggests that individuals who receive morphine while hospitalized demonstrate a decrease in symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the mechanisms of effects are not yet well understood. The goal of the current study was to examine three possible mediators for this effect. Sixty-one injured (burns, motor vehicle accidents, falls, and assaults) children were assessed during hospitalization and again 3 months post discharge. Assessment included acute and follow-up child report measures of pain, PTSD, and anxiety symptoms, as well as a medical record review fo

Nosocomial spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and bacteremia in cirrhotic patients: impact of isolate type on prognosis and characteristics of infection.

The characteristics of and prognosis for nosocomial spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) and bacteremia were examined in a prospective study that included data from 194 consecutive episodes of SBP and 119 episodes of bacteremia, 93.3% of which were nosocomial, in 200 hospitalized cirrhotic patients. Gram-positive pathogens were predominant (70% of the total) among isolates from nosocomial infections; the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was 24.8%. Nosocomial and staphylococcal infections were associated with a higher mortality rate than were community-acquire

Should patients with normal cranial CT scans following minor head injury be hospitalized for observation?

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of complications in hospitalized patients with normal cranial computed tomographic (CT) scans following minor head injury (Glasgow Coma scale of 13-15). Seventy-three patients were included in the analysis, with 63 children being assigned a GCS score of 15 at presentation. Seventy-one percent of patients were male, and motor vehicle accidents accounted for 56% of the injuries. Forty patients reported loss of consciousness (LOC) following the accident. The mean length of hospital stay was 1.69 +/- 0.94 days. GCS scores, history of LOC, vo

Behavioral/emotional indicators of sexual abuse in child psychiatric inpatients: a controlled comparison with physical abuse.

Several behavioral and emotional indicators of child sexual abuse were compared for both sexually (n = 29) and physically abused (n = 52) children from a sample of 103 hospitalized psychiatric patients. The measures included (1) scores from a factor-analyzed sexual abuse symptom checklist covering home/community behavior that was rated by parents during a clinical interview and (2) frequency counts of psychological symptoms exhibited by the children during a 3-week period of hospitalization. Results of a 2 (sexual abuse status) X 2 (physical abuse status) X 2 (gender) Multivariate Analysis of

Atypical measles in adolescents: evaluation of clinical and pulmonary function.

During a community outbreak of measles, 10 patients aged 11 through 19 were hospitalized with prominent pulmonary infiltrates and clinical manifestations of high fever and rash. Diagnoses of atypical measles were confirmed by hemagglutination-inhibition and complement-fixation antibody studies. Patients were followed with pulmonary function studies for 12 weeks. The most common admitting diagnoses were varicella, scarlet fever, meningococcemia, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, due largely to the protean cutaneous manifestations. Roentgenographic studies showed diffuse, segmental, and nodular

Clinical features and outcomes of children's interstitial lung disease accompanied with connective tissue disease: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Medical complexity of childhood interstitial lung disease (chILD) with connective tissue disease (CTD) poses a considerable challenge to pediatricians. METHODS: Clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, pulmonary function tests (PFTs), treatments and outcomes obtained for patients with CTD-chILD were analyzed in a prospective study. RESULTS: Patients' median age at diagnosis was 7 years old. About 29.4% (15/51) suffered rapidly progressive childhood ILD (RP-chILD) with a high mortality rate (33.3%, 5/15), and the incidence of RP-chILD in juvenile idiopathic inflammatory myop

Severe Neonatal Interstitial Lung Disease Caused by a Rare Surfactant Protein C Mutation.

Childhood interstitial lung disease (chILD) is a collective term for a group of rare lung disorders of heterogeneous origin. Surfactant dysfunction disorders are a cause of chILD with onset during the neonatal period and infancy. Clinical signs of tachypnea and hypoxemia are nonspecific and usually caused by common conditions like lower respiratory tract infections. We report on a full-term male newborn who was readmitted to the hospital at 7 days of age with marked tachypnea and poor feeding during the respiratory syncytial virus season. After exclusion of infection and other, more common con

[Nursing care of a preschool-age child with cellulites induced by phagocyte deficiency].

Phagocyte, the first inflammatory response of the immune system, is an important component of the wound healing process. For children with low immunity who suffer from phagocyte deficiency, even a small wound will result in a rapid response to systemic infection, poor wound healing, and hospitalization for treatment. Such treatments often bring enormous pressure to bear on the child, with serious impacts on his or her psychological well-being as well as on that of the family. This paper applies the concept of preschool-age child development and "TIME" criteria proposed by Dr. Schultz to assess

[Child health care and its development in Vrsac].

Documents concerning history of medicine during the Turkish reign (1552-1716) are very rare. However, there is evidence of plague epidemic in 18th century and colera epidemic in the 19th century. The first medical institutions: The German Communal Hospital, The Serbian Hospital and the Pharmacy were founded in the second half of the 18th century. In the year 1803, children were vaccinated against variola. The first Serbian book about child care--"Cadoljub" was written by Dr. Gavrilo Pekarović (1812-1851) during his studies of medicine in Budapest. In 1927 the city founded a dispensary for the

Determining the true incidence of seasonal respiratory syncytial virus-confirmed hospitalizations in preterm and term infants in Western Australia.

Respiratory syncytial virus contributes to significant global infant morbidity and mortality. We applied a previously developed statistical prediction model incorporating pre-pandemic RSV testing data and hospital admission data to estimate infant RSV-hospitalizations by birth month and prematurity, focused on infants aged <1 year. The overall predicted RSV-hospitalization incidence rates in infants <6 months were 32.7/1,000 child-years (95 % CI: 31.8, 33.5) and 3.1/1,000 child-years (95 % CI: 3.0, 3.1) in infants aged 6-<12 months. Predicted RSV-hospitalization rates for infants aged <6 month

Effect of Childhood Disease on Hospital Presentation: A Survey of Pediatricians.

BACKGROUND: Determining when caregivers should take their children to a hospital is crucial in ensuring the health and safety of children. Because children cannot make these decisions on their own, caregivers bear the core responsibility for the wellness of their children. The aim of this study was to determine how disease, disability, and child behavior affect when and how often caregivers take their children to a hospital. METHODS: A structured anonymous online survey was circulated to pediatricians in Japan. Pediatricians were queried about the characteristics of their patients, including

Many parents think their child is dying when having a first febrile convulsion.

Fifty parents of 36 consecutive children admitted to hospital with their first febrile convulsion were interviewed shortly after the event. Very few parents voluntarily said that they had thought their child was dying, but when asked specifically the majority said they had thought the child was dying or likely to die. This common fear should be kept in mind when discussing febrile convulsions with parents, who are unlikely to volunteer the information.

Intentional poisoning of two siblings by prescription drugs. An unusual form of child abuse.

The two cases described in this report are examples of a bizarre form of a child abuse. Intentional poisoning with prescription drugs was used by the mother to simulate an underlying disease in her two children. Combined with misleading history and interference with laboratory procedures, she confounded physicians for years, and led to unnecessary hospitalizations, treatment and multiple laboratory procedures for these children. This report may alert physicians to earlier recognition of this form of child abuse.

Characteristics of Child Deaths and Near-Deaths Resulting From Violence or Maltreatment.

U.S. children suffer higher rates of death resulting from violence than children in economically comparable countries. Prevention of violent injury relies on robust data regarding demographic and contributing factors. This retrospective study of records from the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI), the University of New Mexico Children's Hospital (UNMH), and the UNMH child protection team examined demographic and risk factors for child deaths and near-deaths resulting from violence or maltreatment (abuse or neglect) during the period August 1, 2019 - September 30, 2022. The OMI
