Interventions by Health Care Professionals Who Provide Routine Child Health Care to Reduce Tobacco Smoke Exposure in Children: A Review and Meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Reducing child exposure to tobacco smoke is a public health priority. Guidelines recommend that health care professionals in child health settings should address tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) in children. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of interventions delivered by health care professionals who provide routine child health care in reducing TSE in children. DATA SOURCES: A secondary analysis of 57 trials included in a 2014 Cochrane review and a subsequent extended search was performed. Controlled trials (published through June 2015) of interventions that focused on reduc…

Sex-specific associations between prenatal maternal mental health and child behavior problems at age 7: A (multi-center) longitudinal study of socially disadvantaged mother-child dyads.

Mental health issues are highly prevalent in socially disadvantaged populations, impacting both mothers and children. Maternal mental health plays a crucial role in child development and well-being. This study aimed to assess the association between maternal symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress during pregnancy and child behavioral problems at age 7 in a socially disadvantaged population. Data from the German longitudinal Pro Kind study were analyzed using the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale (DASS-21) to assess maternal distress in pregnancy and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL 6-18R)

Child maltreatment, lifetime trauma, and mental health in Swiss older survivors of enforced child welfare practices: Investigating the mediating role of self-esteem and self-compassion.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a common occurrence and has frequently been shown to adversely impact mental health over the lifespan. Minors affected by welfare practices have a higher risk of exposure to child maltreatment. However, the long-term correlates of child maltreatment in welfare practices and mental health, in addition to potential mediators, are insufficiently examined in later life. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to a) examine the experiences of child maltreatment, lifetime traumata, and mental health of Swiss older adults affected by enforced child welfare practices, in comparis

A factorial cluster-randomised controlled trial combining home-environmental and early child development interventions to improve child health and development: rationale, trial design and baseline findings.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to unhealthy environments and inadequate child stimulation are main risk factors that affect children's health and wellbeing in low- and middle-income countries. Interventions that simultaneously address several risk factors at the household level have great potential to reduce these negative effects. We present the design and baseline findings of a cluster-randomised controlled trial to evaluate the impact of an integrated home-environmental intervention package and an early child development programme to improve diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections and childhood devel

Evidence-based evolution of child marriage prevention-a decade of sexual and reproductive health programming in Pakistan.

Child marriage in Pakistan is sustained by deeply entrenched patriarchal norms and socioeconomic structures that limit girls' agency and access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). This paper analyses a decade of programme learning from the Awareness to Action project (A2A, 2013-2016) and the Yes I Do Alliance (YID, 2016-2020), drawing on a baseline study, mid-term evaluation, external endline evaluation, and the YID inception report. Findings showed substantial individual- and community-level gains: 80% of adolescent girls correctly defined reproductive health at midline, 92%

The quality of early relational health modifies the effect of early life stress on child emerging psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Early relational health (ERH) is thought to buffer the association between early life stress (ELS) and child psychopathology, but limited work has directly tested this hypothesis. OBJECTIVE: We evaluate mother-infant emotional connection, a facet of ERH, as a buffer of combined and individual impacts of specific ELS exposures (maternal mental health and interpartner conflict) on child psychopathology. METHODS: Participants included mother-infant dyads (n=100) followed longitudinally in the COMBO cohort, a convenience sample recruited during the COVID-19 pandemic. ERH was assessed

Compounded Complexity: The Impact of Social Determinants of Health on a Child With Cerebral Palsy and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a common motor disorder in children; however, when combined with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), it presents as a rare and highly complex condition requiring coordinated, multidisciplinary care. This case report highlights the challenges faced by a recently immigrated, uninsured child with limited financial resources, demonstrating how these barriers contributed to the progressive deterioration of her condition. It shows the significant impact of social determinants of health (SDoH) on the well-being and survival of children with complex medical needs. Addressing these ch

Addressing the mental health needs of victims-survivors of technology-assisted child sexual abuse and grooming.

Direct work with victims-survivors of technology-assisted child sexual abuse who experienced online grooming reveals a constellation of mental health and support impacts, flowing from the abusive experience. This practitioner report highlights the areas of mental load affecting victims-survivors as a direct result of grooming. Juggling these psychological burdens produces lingering mental health impacts for victims-survivors. The report further outlines priorities for support services to target when working with victims-survivors, to assist in dismantling the detrimental psychological harms in

The Impact of the 2021 Child Tax Credit on Perinatal Health: Evidence From the Expansion and Postexpiration Periods.

INTRODUCTION: The perinatal period is a pivotal life stage that profoundly influences lifelong health and well-being. In 2021, the U.S. temporarily expanded the Child Tax Credit, providing monthly payments during July-December 2021 and the remaining lump-sum payment during the 2022 tax season. This study examines the impact of the 2021 expansion on perinatal health among low-income families. METHODS: Data were drawn from national birth certificate data (January 2021-December 2022) and were restricted to women covered by Medicaid, who are likely to be low income. A quasi-experimental event-stu

Psychometric properties of a child health status questionnaire for Thai children with lupus: Nursing practice implications.

BACKGROUND: Perceived child health status is an important factor related to quality of life and clinical outcomes of children with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). While culturally appropriate Child Health Status Questionnaire (CHSQ) instruments exist for Thai children, their psychometric properties have not been established for pediatric SLE populations. OBJECTIVE: To examine the validity and reliability of the Child Health Status Questionnaire (CHSQ) Form-I (child self-report) and Form-II (parent proxy-report) among Thai children with SLE and their parents, establishing psychometric prop…

A sustainable house design to improve child health in rural Africa: a cluster-randomized controlled trial.

Malaria, diarrhea and acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are the major causes of mortality in young children in sub-Saharan Africa. Here we provide support for the hypothesis that children can be protected from these diseases by improvements in house design. We designed a novel double-story house, called a Star Home, to provide an insect-proof, cleaner, cooler and smoke-free environment, with a reliable supply of water and sanitation. We conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial where households with children under 13 years of age were randomly allocated (1:4.7) to living in 110 Star Ho

Informal Support Networks of Parents Involved With the Child Welfare System: Needs and Mental Health Symptoms.

Studies show the protective power of informal support networks for parents, however, most research in this area is not specific to the child welfare context. With a sample of parents with children involved with the U.S. child welfare system due to substantiated child maltreatment (N = 118), latent profile analyses revealed three distinct profiles of parents' informal support networks including perceived support, received support, and network demands. The profiles were associated with differences in sociodemographic risks, ACEs, and symptoms of depression and stress. Parents with four or more A

From fees to free: impacts of user fee removal on child health outcomes - a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: User fees are a major barrier to accessing healthcare for children, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Policymakers have adopted free care policies to improve utilization and health outcomes, yet evidence specific to children remains fragmented. This systematic review synthesizes the impact of removing user fees on child health. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for English-language studies published between January 1, 2010, and July 31, 2025. Studies were eligible if they assessed complete user fee removal for childre…

Maternal awareness, attitudes, and practices relating to green spaces and their impact on child health in Sunyani, Ghana.

Green Spaces have been demonstrated to hold several benefits for ecosystems and the sustenance of human health. In this hospital-based study in the Bono Region of Ghana, the researchers explore awareness, attitudes, and practices towards green spaces among 420 mothers. A cross-sectional design was employed to elicit primary data using a structured questionnaire. Following this, the study findings revealed that awareness of green spaces was relatively high among mothers; however, their attitudes and practices remained low, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to bridge this gap. Does incontinence in a child with bladder exstrophy negatively affect caregivers? A mental health inventory survey.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary continence is a goal of bladder exstrophy epispadias complex (BEEC) surgical management. However, it is often not achieved until school age or later. Little is known about the mental health implications of this incontinence on caregivers and whether this should affect timing of surgical interventions to achieve continence. We hypothesized that caregivers of children with continuous incontinence or dry intervals <1 h per day/night exhibit adverse mental health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between urinary incontinence of children with BEEC and caregive

It takes a village to raise a child- A multidisciplinary approach to promoting paediatric health literacy in cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: In Northern Ireland, approximately 550 people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) attend the regional paediatric and adult centres within the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. This autosomal recessive chronic condition necessitates regular clinical monitoring and a high treatment burden, as well as time implications for the maintenance of respiratory devices. Development of health literacy skills at an early age and promoting children with CF (CwCF) to take an active role in their healthcare has many advantages relating to their long-term self-care in preparation for transition from pa
