The effects of several representative calcium channel antagonists on depolarization-evoked release of [3H]-norepinephrine were investigated in isolated, superfused rabbit iris-ciliary bodies. Potassium (50 mM)-evoked neurosecretion was blocked by 5 mM CoCl2 and partially inhibited by 10(-6) M nitrendipine or verapamil. Microsomes were prepared from bovine ciliary bodies. The contents of cytochrome P-450 and related components of the microsomal electron transport system were determined. The cytochrome P-450 content was 32 pmoles/mg protein, which was about 4% that in rat liver. The cytochrome b5 content was 59 pmoles/mg protein. The NADH-cytochrome c reductase and NADPH-cytochrome c reductase activities were 268 and 18 nmoles/min/mg protein, respectively. The ethoxyresorufin deethylase activity was 2.1 pmoles product formed/min/mg protein.

A case report is presented of a 43-year-old woman who underwent cyclectomy for malignant melanoma of the ciliary body of the left eye. One year after operation, the eye was enucleated because of inoperable total traction retinal detachment. The pathologic examination revealed no signs of local recurrence. At five-year follow-up, no systemic spread was found.

All the 91 cases of enucleated malignant melanoma of the choroid and ciliary body in an area of the Swedish west coast (630 000 inhabitants) during the period 1956-1975 are analysed. The incidence was 0.72/100 000 inhabitants and year, which means that there was no increase lately corresponding to the increase described for cutaneous melanoma. PURPOSE: To evaluate outcome of surgical resection of iris and irido-ciliary melanomas.
METHOD: Retrospective analysis of all cases treated in Denmark 1975-1999 with clinical follow-up in 2002 and death certificate analysis in 2008. A quality of life questionnaire was completed at follow-up.
