Sensitivity to carbon dioxide and translational studies of anxiety disorders.

Heightened concentrations of CO2 in inhaled air provoke temporary acidification of the brain, followed by compensatory hyperventilation and increased arousal/anxiety. These responses are likely to map a basic, latent general alarm/avoidance system that is largely shared across mammals, and are sources of individual differences. By showing paroxysmal respiratory and emotional responses to CO2 challenges, humans with panic and separation anxiety disorders lie at one extreme of the distribution for CO2 sensitivity. This is also a developmental trait, sensitive to interference with parental cares.

Long-lasting training in the Barnes maze prompts hippocampal spinogenesis and habituation in rats.

There is a constant need to assess spatial memory in small rodents to elucidate the basics of cognition in neuroscience experiments. Thus, the significance of the Barnes maze in the biology of hippocampal and cortical neural function cannot be overemphasized. Despite the wide use of the Barnes maze, the effect of maze task training on the structure of hippocampal neurons is yet to be elucidated. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to intense training on the Barnes maze (3 months). Subsequently, the hippocampus (cornus ammonis and dentate gyrus) of separate sets of rats was processed for G

On the Role of the Inferior Intraparietal Sulcus in Visual Working Memory for Lateralized Single-feature Objects.

A consolidated practice in cognitive neuroscience is to explore the properties of human visual working memory through the analysis of electromagnetic signals using cued change detection tasks. Under these conditions, EEG/MEG activity increments in the posterior parietal cortex scaling with the number of memoranda are often reported in the hemisphere contralateral to the objects' position in the memory array. This highly replicable finding clashes with several reported failures to observe compatible hemodynamic activity modulations using fMRI or fNIRS in comparable tasks. Here, we reconcile thi…

Normal binocular rivalry in autism: implications for the excitation/inhibition imbalance hypothesis.

Autism is characterized by disruption in multiple dimensions of perception, emotion, language and social cognition. Many hypotheses for the underlying neurophysiological basis have been proposed. Among these is the excitation/inhibition (E/I) imbalance hypothesis, which states that levels of cortical excitation and inhibition are disrupted in autism. We tested this theory in the visual system, because vision is one of the better understood systems in neuroscience, and because the E/I imbalance theory has been proposed to explain hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli in autism. We conducted two e

Dopamine and the Neural "Now": Essay and Review of Addiction: A Disorder of Choice.

Rather than view addiction as a disease, Heyman sees it as a choice-one that works like other choices, whereby immediate rewards outshine long-term gains. He rejects neuroscientific explanations of addictive behavior, because he believes they cast it as involuntary or disease-like. I argue that the disease-versus-choice debate creates a false dichotomy: Neuroscience does not have to frame addiction as a disease. Rather, it can help explain how addicts make impulsive choices in the moment and distort appraisal and decision-making habits in the long run. Specifically, the salience of drug-relate

Procedural learning and dyslexia.

Three major 'neural systems', specialized for different types of information processing, are the sensory, declarative, and procedural systems. It has been proposed (Trends Neurosci., 30(4), 135-141) that dyslexia may be attributable to impaired function in the procedural system together with intact declarative function. We provide a brief overview of the increasing evidence relating to the hypothesis, noting that the framework involves two main claims: first that 'neural systems' provides a productive level of description avoiding the underspecificity of cognitive descriptions and the overspec

Schizotypal personality traits and the social learning of fear.

Schizotypy can be defined as a combination of traits qualitatively similar to those found in schizophrenia, but milder in their expression, that can be found in clinical and non-clinical populations. In this research, we explore, to our knowledge, for the first time, whether schizotypal personality traits may affect the acquisition of conditioned fear by social means only. Apart from being an essential capacity to ensure learning in safe environments, social fear learning shares important characteristics with direct fear acquisition, which also makes it a great candidate for developing success

When the Algorithm Becomes the Dietitian: Large Language Model Hallucinations, Algorithmic Food Environments, and the Erosion of Nutritional Autonomy.

Large language models (LLMs) can answer dietary questions, but their use as substitutes for registered dietitians remains insufficiently quantified. Evaluations have identified inaccurate nutrient targets, incomplete clinical advice, and insufficient personalization, alongside useful performance on some general nutrition tasks. Social media and food-delivery interfaces may also influence dietary choices through food cues, social endorsement, and choice architecture. This conceptual perspective presents ADRIFT (Algorithmic Dietary Reconfiguration through Informational, Framing, and Technologica

Seeing Through Feeling: Dynamic Interplay Between Emotion and Visual Perception.

For decades, visual perception was treated as a linear, feature-extracting mechanism driven almost exclusively by bottom-up sensory inputs. Emerging insights from affective neuroscience and cognitive psychology have systematically dismantled this view, revealing that vision operates within a continuous, bidirectional dialog with emotional systems. This review synthesizes the multi-layered neurobiological architectures underpinning this relationship. The pathways through which top-down emotional states recalibrate sensory processing are analyzed. Mechanisms including amygdalocortical feedback,

Optimizing deep CNN architecture via hybrid Harris Hawks arithmetic algorithm for EEG meditation classification.

Meditation is a widely recognized practice that enhances mental well-being and cognitive function. Despite advances in EEG meditation neuroscience, challenges persist in extracting robust and interpretable features from complex, non-stationary EEG signals. Existing classification methods often rely on limited feature sets and traditional machine learning approaches. These methods lack comprehensive integration of advanced time-frequency analysis, deep learning, and modern nature-inspired optimization techniques. To address this gap, we introduce a hybrid EEG-based theta-band meditation classif

Acupuncture-related peripheral stimulation as a candidate neuromodulatory model of insomnia: clinical evidence, sleep-wake circuitry, and translational limits.

Acupuncture-related peripheral stimulation is often discussed as a non-pharmacological option for insomnia disorder, but its relevance to sleep neuroscience depends on more than improvement in sleep questionnaires. This critical narrative Review evaluates whether acupuncture and related acupoint-based stimulation methods can serve as testable peripheral models of sleep-wake and hyperarousal circuitry. Across clinical studies, the most consistent signal is improvement in subjective sleep quality and insomnia severity in selected populations. Evidence for objective sleep architecture, multiday s

Decision for self and other modulates risk attitude and electrophysiological processing: evidence from a behavioral and electrophysiological experiment.

Understanding how people make risky decisions for others compared to themselves is central to decision neuroscience. However, the cognitive and neural underpinnings of such self-other shifts in risk preference-and the mechanisms driving individual differences-remain unclear. To address this, we employed a mixed gambling task with feedback in which participants made risky decisions for themselves and for others while electroencephalography was recorded. Although individuals generally exhibited similar patterns across agents, decisions made for others were associated with a higher degree of risk

Effects of Cardiac Activity on Somatosensory Evoked High-Frequency Oscillations.

Recent neuroscience research has shed light on heart-brain interactions during diverse information processes across perception, affective, and cognitive domains. It remains unclear how the heartbeat-related interoceptive pathway affects the neural responses of somatosensory information processing. In this study, we combined EEG, ECG, and DTI to examine the effect of heart-brain interaction on cortical somatosensory processing and investigated both the cardiac phase and heart rate effects on somatosensory-evoked high-frequency oscillations (HFOs). First, we examined the somatosensory cortex act

Cerebral asymmetry: Historical introduction.

Cortical localization and hemispheric asymmetry of function are key concepts for analyzing the relationship between the brain, mind, and behavior in clinical neurology, neuropsychology, cognitive neuroscience, and modern philosophy. This chapter presents the history of asymmetries in the human central nervous system within the context of right-left asymmetries of bodily structure, as can be detected in individuals of virtually all living species. It has been known since antiquity that behavioral deficits on one side of the body could be caused by brain lesions on the opposite side. Yet, the id…

Can brain network connectivity facilitate the clinical development of disease-modifying anti-Alzheimer drugs?

The preclinical phase of Alzheimer's disease represents a crucial time window for therapeutic intervention but requires the identification of clinically relevant biomarkers that are sensitive to the effects of disease-modifying drugs. Amyloid peptide and tau proteins, the main histological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease, have been widely used as biomarkers of anti-amyloid and anti-tau drugs. However, these biomarkers do not fully capture the multiple biological pathways of the brain. Indeed, robust amyloid-target engagement by anti-amyloid monoclonal antibodies has recently translated into m

Dimensions of early life adversity and their associations with functional brain organisation.

Early life adversity is associated with differences in brain function and an elevated risk for poor mental health. Using data from children aged 10 (N = 5,798) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) cohort, we investigated how adversity relates to functional brain organisation using a network neuroscience approach. We derived four data-driven categories of adversity by fitting a mixed graphical model: household/community instability, physical/sexual abuse, parental neglect, and financial difficulties. Analyses revealed that multiple forms of adversity were associated with reduc
