Effects of home-based exercise training on gut microbiota and possible relations with cognitive function and metabolic health in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a randomized control trial.

AIM: Evidence suggests that the gut microbiome is involved in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study investigates the association between gut microbiota composition, cognitive function, and metabolic health in postmenopausal women with T2DM following a 12-week home-based multi-task exercise intervention. METHODS: Seventy postmenopausal women with T2DM were randomly assigned to either an intervention group, which performed home-based multi-task exercises, or a control group. Gut microbiota, cognitive function, physical fitness, and metabolic indices were assessed before and after the inte

Effects of a motor and cognitive training program on executive function and different biomarkers related to muscle-brain crosstalk in breast cancer survivors: 3-arm randomised controlled BRAINonFIT study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a significant but often neglected issue for breast cancer survivors that reduces their quality of life. Physical exercise and cognitive training have emerged as promising strategies for CRCI; however, evidence regarding its effectiveness is still unknown. A recently developed motor-cognitive training (dual-tasks) is proposed to examine its efficacy on executive function, physical fitness, emotional symptomatology, and important muscle-brain crosstalk biomarkers. METHODS: The BRAINonFIT study is a randomised, controlled, longitudinal …

The Impact of Acute Mild Normobaric Hypoxia and a Single Bout of Exercise to Volitional Exhaustion on Cognitive Performance in Endurance and Strength-Trained Athletes: The role of BDNF, EP-1, Catecholamines and Lactate.

The aim of the study was to examine whether a single bout of exercise to volitional exhaustion, performed under moderate normobaric hypoxia (H), would affect psychomotor performance (PP) in differently trained athletes. For this purpose, ten strength-trained (S) athletes, ten endurance-trained (E) athletes and ten healthy men leading a sedentary lifestyle as a control (C) group performed voluntarily two graded exercise tests until volitional exhaustion (EVE) under normoxia (N) and H (FiO2 = 14.7%). We measured the peripheral level of the brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), choice reactio

The COMPEX-trial: computer-based cognitive rehabilitation to improve executive function versus unspecific training in patients after stroke, cardiac arrest or in Parkinson's disease: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

RATIONALE: Impairment of the executive functions can be reduced by training, but most traditional approaches require specialized expertise. Therefore, cognitive rehabilitation is only offered to a minority of patients with a need. Computer-based Cognitive Rehabilitation (CBCR) is a low-cost intervention with rehabilitation potential. Outside of hospital rehabilitation institutions, the work is based on dysfunctions and not diagnoses, why patients after stroke, cardiac arrest, or in Parkinson's disease were included based on their dysfunctions with the aim of potential broad implementation. Can we challenge attention and interpretation threat biases in rescued child labourers with a history of physical abuse using a computerised cognitive training task? Data on feasibility, acceptability and target engagement.

Child labourers are more likely to have experienced physical victimisation, which may increase risk for anxiety/depression, by shaping threat biases in information-processing. To target threat biases and vulnerability for anxiety/depression, we evaluated whether Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM) training could be feasibly and acceptably delivered to rescued youth labourers. Seventy-six physically abused rescued labourers aged 14-17 (40 from Nepal, 36 from India) in out-of-home care institutions received either multi-session computerised CBM or control training. Training targeted attention away

A quantitative analysis of human rights-related attitude changes towards people with mental health conditions and psychosocial, intellectual, or cognitive disabilities following completion of the WHO QualityRights e-training in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing recognition of essential human rights, people with mental health conditions and psychosocial, intellectual, or cognitive disabilities' rights are known to be frequently violated in mental healthcare worldwide, with common use of coercive practices and limited recognition of people's right to exercise their legal capacity and make decisions for themselves on treatment and other issues affecting them. To tackle this issue, Ghana adopted the WHO QualityRights Initiative in 2019. This aims to introduce a right-based, person-centred recovery approach within the mental he

Beyond aerobic intensity: Comparing the effects of cognitively engaging gross-motor coordination training and aerobic exercise on working memory and selective attention in school-age children: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Working memory and selective attention develop rapidly during middle childhood and are sensitive to physical activity. Aerobic exercise is thought to act mainly through intensity-driven physiological pathways (cerebral perfusion, neurotrophic signalling and arousal), whereas gross-motor coordination training additionally imposes perceptual, decision-making, motor-planning and inhibitory demands that may provide stronger and more domain-specific cognitive stimulation. This study compared 14-week gross-motor coordination and aerobic exercise interventions, designed a priori to be mat

BRAINSTORMING: A study protocol for a randomised double-blind clinical trial to assess the impact of concurrent brain stimulation (tDCS) and working memory training on cognitive performance in Acquired Brain Injury (ABI).

BACKGROUND: Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) admissions have an incidence of 385 per 100,000 of the population in the UK, and as brain injury often involves the frontal networks, cognitive domains affected are likely to be executive control, working memory, and problem-solving deficits, resulting in difficulty with everyday activities. The above observations make working memory, and related constructs such as attention and executive functioning attractive targets for neurorehabilitation. We propose a combined home-based rehabilitation protocol involving the concurrent administration of a working me

A Secondary Analysis of Longitudinal Pilot-Study Data Investigating the Associations Between Health-Related Quality of Life and Executive Functions in Remitted Major Depressive Disorder and Developments Two-Years Following Cognitive Training.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with reduced quality of life and relapse risk. However, few studies have investigated how quality of life is associated with cognitive deficits following MDD and is affected by cognitive training. This study investigated the long-term effects of computer-based working memory training (CWMT) on health-related quality of life (HRQL) in remitted MDD, and the association between executive functions (EF) and HRQL. Twenty-nine remitted participants (M age 36.21, SD = 10.8) were included in a pre-post pilot study of CWMT with 1- and 2-year follow-up. Twen…

Application of Concomitant Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) and Cognitive Behavioral-Oriented Training (CBT) for Pragmatic Skills Improvement in Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Preliminary Data from a Pilot Study.

Objectives: Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) exhibit difficulties in the social use of language, regardless of age, cognitive abilities, and symptom severity. The left Broca's area and adjacent cortex are crucial for socio-pragmatic language, particularly in retrieving and integrating context-dependent words. Neuroimaging studies in ASD have shown hypoactivation of the Broca's area and an aberrant pattern of functional connectivity between language-related regions, suggesting their potential involvement in socio-communicative deficits. Given the potential of tDCS to modulate bra

Combined Working Memory Training and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Demonstrates Low Feasibility and Potentially Worse Outcomes on Delay to Smoking and Cognitive Tasks: A Randomized 2 × 2 Factorial Design Pilot and Feasibility Study.

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) has shown promising results in treating several Substance Use Disorders including Tobacco Use Disorder. However, questions remain regarding how to optimize treatment outcomes. Enhancement of working memory by rTMS is a potential therapeutic mechanism. The current pilot study examined whether rTMS plus a cognitive training program could enhance the effects of rTMS on smoking behaviors using a controlled, factorial design. AIMS AND METHODS: We hypothesized that cognitive training plus stimulation would improve control over smokin…

A study protocol for a randomised trial of adjunct computerised memory specificity training (c-MeST) for major depression in youth: targeting cognitive mechanisms to enhance usual care outcomes in mental health settings.

BACKGROUND: Youth depression is highly prevalent and is related to impairments in academic, social and behavioural functioning. Evidence-based treatments are available, but many young people do not respond or sufficiently recover with first-line options, and a significant proportion experience relapse. Consequently, there is clear scope to enhance intervention in this critical period of early-onset depression. Memory specificity training (MeST) is a low-intensity intervention for depression that targets reduced specificity when recalling memories of the past, a common cognitive vulnerability i

Effects of a developmental dyslexia remediation protocol based on the training of audio-phonological cognitive processes in dyslexic children with high intellectual potential: study protocol for a multiple-baseline single-case experimental design.

BACKGROUND: The significant prevalence of children with high intellectual potential (HIP) in the school-age population and the high rate of comorbidity with learning disabilities such as dyslexia has increased the demand for speech and language therapy and made it more complex. However, the management of dyslexic patients with high intellectual potential (HIP-DD) is poorly referenced in the literature. A large majority of studies on HIP-DD children focus on the screening and diagnosis of developmental dyslexia, but only a few address remediation. Developmental dyslexia is a severe and persiste
