PURPOSE: We assess the success rate of periurethral collagen injection in children with neurogenic bladder dysfunction secondary to myelomeningocele.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1992 to 1998, 15 male and 5 female patients with spina bifida (age 13.3 +/- 3.8 years) underwent endoscopic collagen injection for the treatment of urinary incontinence secondary to sphincter deficiency. In the present work, the interaction of aggrecan, decorin and biglycan isolated from pig laryngeal cartilage and of the three squid cartilage proteoglycans with collagen type I and II was studied. Collagenous colitis is a disorder which has been diagnosed with increasing frequency in the last few years, probably due to the routine obtention of colon biopsy specimens in the study of patients with chronic diarrhoea. Good responses have been reported with a number of therapies, although only a scarce number of clinical trials have been performed, partly because of the small number of patients studied. Two cases of collagenous colitis with different therapeutic approaches are here reported. All medical therapy options for this interesting disorder are reviewed.

Porous collagen-glycosaminoglycan (PCG) membranes with a porous silicone elastomer coating have been useful as a scaffold for dermal replacement in burn victims. Critical physicochemical parameters of these membranes include pore size, cross-link density, the percentage of glycosaminoglycan, and the degree of banding of the collagen. A connective tissue disease resembling the human Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is reported in three Garafiano shepherd dogs from the same litter. The clinical signs included skin hyperextensibility and fragility, joint laxity, and ocular lesions. Microscopical studies showed abnormalities in the packing of collagen in fibrils and fibres in the skin. Systemic connective tissue defects were demonstrated in one necropsied puppy.

The authors describe 3 cases of postoperative infection as a complication after the use of vicryl-collagen dural substitute.
