An evaluation of surgical outcome of bilateral cleft lip surgery using a modified Millard's (Fork Flap) technique.

BACKGROUND: The central third of the face is distorted by the bilateral cleft of the lip and palate and restoring the normal facial form is one of the primary goals for the reconstructive surgeons. The history of bilateral cleft lip repair has evolved from discarding the premaxilla and prolabium and approximating the lateral lip elements to a definitive lip and primary cleft nasal repair utilising the underlying musculature. The aim of this study was to review surgical outcome of bilateral cleft lip surgery (BCLS) done at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review

Aetiology of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex and Prevalence of its Pathogens in Europe.

The canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC) is an endemic worldwide syndrome involving multiple viral and bacterial pathogens. Traditionally, Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb), canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2), canine distemper virus (CDV), canine herpesvirus (CHV) and canine parainfluenza virus (CPiV) were considered the major causative agents. Lately, new pathogens have been implicated in the development of CIRDC, namely canine influenza virus (CIV), canine respiratory coronavirus (CRCoV), canine pneumovirus (CnPnV), Mycoplasma cynos and Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus

Modeling stable and dynamic vulnerabilities in suicide risk: A mechanistic test of fluid vulnerability theory in military personnel with suicidal ideation.

BACKGROUND: Suicide attempts among U.S. service members and Veterans with suicidal ideation remain poorly characterized despite their disproportionate contribution to suicide mortality. The present study tested whether the latent structure of suicide risk aligns with Fluid Vulnerability Theory's (FVT) distinction between stable vulnerabilities and fluid state processes. METHODS: Pooled baseline data from the Military Suicide Research Consortium Common Data Elements (2010-2023; N = 2246) were analyzed using multiple imputation and zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) regression. We compared …

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing bacteria and their resistance determinants in different wastewaters and rivers in Nepal.

Wastewaters serve as significant reservoirs of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Despite the evidence of antimicrobial resistance in wastewaters and river water in Kathmandu, direct linkage between them is not discussed yet. This study investigated the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria and associated resistance genes in wastewaters and river water. Out of 246 bacteria from wastewaters, 57.72% were ESBL producers and 77.64% of them were multidrug resistant (MDR). ESBL producing E. coli was dominant in municipal and hospital wastewaters (HWW) as well as in river

Identification of the Molecular Components of Enhancer-Mediated Gene Expression Variation in Multiple Tissues Regulating Blood Pressure.

BACKGROUND: Inter-individual variation in blood pressure (BP) arises in part from sequence variants within enhancers modulating the expression of causal genes. We propose that these genes, active in tissues relevant to BP physiology, can be identified from tissue-level epigenomic data and genotypes of BP-phenotyped individuals. METHODS: We used chromatin accessibility data from the heart, adrenal, kidney, and artery to identify cis-regulatory elements (CREs) in these tissues and estimate the impact of common human single-nucleotide variants within these CREs on gene expression, using machine

Survey on the management of childhood epilepsy among general practitioners in the area of Marrakech.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder in the pediatric population and its evolution can be fatal. It represents a major public health problem as well as an economic burden for the families of affected children, health systems and the overall economies of countries. This further accentuates the role that general practitioners can play in the management of childhood epilepsy in the face of the persistent lack of neurologists and neuro-pediatricians in our country. METHODS: In order to assess the knowledge and therapeutic habits of general practitioners, we carried out a

Molecular parallelism in the evolution of a master sex-determining role for the anti-Mullerian hormone receptor 2 gene (amhr2) in Midas cichlids.

The evolution of sex chromosomes and their differentiation from autosomes is a major event during genome evolution that happened many times in several lineages. The repeated evolution and lability of sex-determination mechanisms in fishes makes this a well-suited system to test for general patterns in evolution. According to current theory, differentiation is triggered by the suppression of recombination following the evolution of a new master sex-determining gene. However, the molecular mechanisms that establish recombination suppression are known from few examples, owing to the intrinsic dif

Comprehensive Analyses of Nitric Oxide-Induced Plant Stem Cell-Related Genes in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Plant stem cells are pluripotent cells that have diverse applications in regenerative biology and medicine. However, their roles in plant growth and disease resistance are often overlooked. Using high-throughput RNA-seq data, we identified approximately 20 stem cell-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that were responsive to the nitric oxide (NO) donor S-nitrosocysteine (CySNO) after six hours of infiltration. Among these DEGs, the highest number of positive correlations (R ≥ 0.8) was observed for CLAVATA3/EMBRYO SURROUNDING REGION-RELATED (CLE) 12. Gene ontology (GO) terms for molec

Exploring the Role of Race and Ethnicity in Resident-to-Resident Aggression: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Resident-to-resident aggression (RRA) is the most common form of elder mistreatment in long-term care settings. Although race/ethnicity is likely a contributing factor, research has been limited in examining the role of residents' race and ethnicity in RRA. We sought to define and qualitatively examine the predisposing factors and acute precipitants of race/ethnicity-related resident-to-resident aggression (RE-RRA). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Guided by the socioecological model, events-based perspective, and conceptual work on stigma-based aggression, we developed

Acoustic Metrics of the Strain Dimension of Voice Quality: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Strained voice quality-commonly referred to as vocal strain-is a hallmark of functional voice disorders such as muscle tension dysphonia and is often associated with vocal fatigue and laryngeal hyperfunction. Although listeners describe it as excessive vocal effort, strained voice quality frequently overlaps perceptually with breathiness and roughness, complicating reliable assessment. Despite its clinical relevance, no standardized acoustic definition of strained voice quality has been established. PURPOSE: This review aims to identify and summarize the voice acoustic parameters

Lessons Learned From Shared Decision-Making With Oral Anticoagulants: Viewpoint on Suggestions for the Development of Oral Chemotherapy Decision Aids.

Oral chemotherapy is commonly prescribed, and by using decision aids (DAs), clinicians can facilitate shared decision-making (SDM) to align treatment choices with patient goals and values. Although products exist commercially, little evidence informs the development of DAs targeting the unique challenges of oral chemotherapy. To address this gap in the literature, our objective was to review DAs developed for oral anticoagulation, DA use in oncology, and patient preference surveys to guide the development of DAs for oral chemotherapy. We focused on reviewing SDM, patient preferences, and speci
