Changing men's attitudes and behavior: the Zimbabwe Male Motivation Project.

A multimedia communication campaign was conducted between 1988 and 1989 to promote family planning among men in Zimbabwe. The campaign consisted of a 52-episode semiweekly radio soap opera, about 60 motivational talks, and two pamphlets about contraceptive methods. Changes over time were measured by comparing a subset of a follow-up survey conducted from October to December 1989 to a baseline survey conducted from April to June 1988. Men exposed to the campaign were also compared to men who were not exposed. The follow-up survey revealed that the campaign reached 52 percent of men aged 18 to 5

Implementing a First Nation data-sovereign and agile modelling platform for pandemic management: lessons from Manitoba.

This paper describes lessons learned from a partnership between the First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba (FNHSSM) and researchers at the University of Manitoba to develop a community-led COVID-19 modelling platform. The envisioned tool would allow First Nations leaders to input local data and generate outputs to support decision-making using a stochastic, age-stratified agent-based model of COVID-19 transmission. Although the platform was not fully operationalized during the project, several important lessons emerged. First, the COVID-19 pandemic placed significant demands o

Synergistic fight against future pandemics: Lessons from previous pandemics.

The history of pandemics spans centuries and has had a profound impact on human health, societies, and economies. Pandemics have caused fear, panic, and significant morbidity and mortality rates throughout history. From the Athenian Plague in 430 BC to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, infectious diseases have posed a continuous threat to global health systems. The transition from hunter-gatherer societies to agrarian communities, increased trade and interaction between humans and animals, urbanization, travel rates, and the impact of a growing human population have all contributed to the emergen

COVID-19 Modifications in Public Home- and Community-Based Services for Children with Mental Health Needs.

Eleven states offer 1915(c) Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Medicaid waivers to organize and fund programs that provide in-home and community support services to address the unique needs of children and youth with complex mental health concerns and their families. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic-imposed restrictions on community movement and school engagement were enacted, these children and youth lost in-person access to needed supports through school-based programs and professional community providers. The well documented mental health impacts of the pandemic on children and youth

Differences in Home Health Services and Outcomes Between Traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage.

IMPORTANCE: Private Medicare Advantage (MA) plans recently surpassed traditional Medicare (TM) in enrollment. However, MA plans are facing scrutiny for burdensome prior authorization and potential rationing of care, including home health. MA beneficiaries are less likely to receive home health, but recent evidence on differences in service intensity and outcomes among home health patients is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To examine differences in home health service intensity and patient outcomes between MA and TM. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study was conducted from Januar

The national public health response to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias: Origins, evolution, and recommendations to improve early detection.

Longstanding gaps in the detection of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and biopsychosocial care call for public health action to improve population health. We aim to broaden the understanding of the iterative role state plans have played over the last 20 years in prioritizing improvements in the detection of ADRD, primary care capacity, and equity for disproportionately affected populations. Informed by national ADRD priorities, state plans convene stakeholders to identify local needs, gaps, and barriers and set the stage for development of a national public health infrastructu

Accelerating our response: Government of Canada five-year action plan on sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections.

Sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI)-which include HIV, hepatitis B and C, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and human papillomavirus-remain significant public health issues both nationally and globally. In 2018, a Pan-Canadian STBBI Framework for Action (the Framework) was released by federal, provincial and territorial governments to provide an overarching and comprehensive approach to addressing STBBI for all those involved. This includes all levels of government, First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities and leadership, frontline service providers, clinicians, public healt

Achieving Reproductive Justice Within Family Planning.

There is a long-standing history of reproductive oppression in the United States which impacts how patients, particularly those from marginalized communities, receive reproductive health services today. The reproductive justice (RJ) framework is a tool to support people to become pregnant, to not become pregnant, and to parent in safe communities. In this review, the authors provide essential background about this history and how those in reproductive health care can use the RJ framework through an intersectional lens to achieve inclusive reproductive goals and advocate for comprehensive acces

The Collaborative Care Model for Patients With Both Mental Health and Medical Conditions Implemented in Hospital Outpatient Care Settings.

With the increased concern regarding the negative impact that care in silos has on patients and the health care system, there is growing interest in integrated models of care especially for individuals with co-occurring physical and mental health conditions. Although generally applied in a community setting, we adapted and implemented an evidence-based integrated model of care, the collaborative care model (CCM) in an adult and a pediatric hospital-based outpatient clinic. Enrolment was criteria based and management was measurement driven. The model is team based and consists of new roles for

Pandemic preparedness: pigs, poultry, and people versus plans, products, and practice.

Influenza pandemic preparedness planning is critical for reducing human suffering and negative effects on the economy and society. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working to ensure a rapid, efficient, and successful response to an outbreak if, when, and where it appears. The CDC's context for strategic planning is based on experiences with seasonal influenza and what is known about past influenza pandemics. From a public health perspective, pandemic preparedness can be achieved with a plan that builds a network of shared responsibility from the local to the global level

Study protocol for a cluster-randomized trial to compare human papillomavirus based cervical cancer screening in community-health campaigns versus health facilities in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Despite guidelines for cervical cancer prevention in low-resource countries, a very small proportion of women in these settings undergo screening, and even fewer women are successfully treated. Using pilot data from western Kenya and World Health Organization recommendations, we developed a protocol to implement evidence-based cervical cancer screening and linkage to treatment strategies to the rural communities. We describe the protocol for a cluster-randomized trial to compare two implementation strategies for human-papillomavirus (HPV)-based cervical cancer screening program usi
