PURPOSE: In this study an irradiation cell made as an accessory for an isothermal microcalorimeter is introduced, and its suitability for detection photoreactivity in pharmaceutical solutions and solids is demonstrated. We have analyzed the molecular interaction of 28 sulfonamide inhibitors with human carbonic anhydrase C (HCAC) using an interactive computer graphic display. Bicyclo[1.1.0]butane (BCB) is a highly strained framework whose reactivity arises from the predominant p-character of its central C-C bond. Using density functional theory (DFT) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, we show that progressive fluorination reduces BCB inversion barriers markedly from ∼64 kcal mol-1 in BCB to ∼3.6 kcal mol-1 in the perfluorinated analogue. We present characterization and geochemical data from a core-flooding experiment on a sample from the Three Fingers evaporite unit forming the lower extent of caprock at the Weyburn-Midale reservoir, Canada. This low-permeability sample was characterized in detail using X-ray computed microtomography before and after exposure to CO(2)-acidified brine, allowing mineral phase and voidspace distributions to be quantified in three dimensions. Solution chemistry indicated that CO(2)-acidified brine preferentially dissolved dolomite until saturation was attained, while anhydrite remained unreactive.
