Effect of Menstrual Cycle and Hormonal Contraception on Musculoskeletal Health and Performance: Protocol for a Prospective Cohort Design and Cross-Sectional Comparison.

BACKGROUND: Women of reproductive age experience cyclical variation in the female sex steroid hormones 17β-estradiol and progesterone during the menstrual cycle that is attenuated by some hormonal contraceptives. Estrogens perform a primary function in sexual development and reproduction but have nonreproductive effects on bone, muscle, and sinew tissues (ie, ligaments and tendons), which may influence injury risk and physical performance. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study is to understand the effect of the menstrual cycle and hormonal contraceptive use on bone and calcium metabolism, and m

Contraceptive care of adolescents: overview, tips, strategies, and implications for school nurses.

The United States has one of the highest unintended pregnancy rates of all industrialized nations in the world, with 13% of those occurring among the adolescent population. In 2005, the adolescent birthrate in the United States was 40.5 per 1,000 women and increased 3% in 2006 (Martin et al., 2009). Unintended pregnancy and motherhood can have a tremendous impact and lifelong implications for adolescents and their children as well as financial and societal costs. Helping make contraception accessible to adolescents is one area where school nurses are able to have an impact. Various contracepti

Changes in hair cortisol concentration in intrauterine device initiators: A prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Prior studies found increased hair cortisol concentration (a surrogate marker for hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activation) in users of the levonorgestrel intrauterine device (LNG 52 mg IUD). We evaluated change in hair cortisol and psychometric tests in women initiating a copper (CuT380 IUD) or LNG 52 mg IUD. STUDY DESIGN: We prospectively enrolled healthy women initiating an LNG 52 mg IUD or CuT380 IUD. Participants provided hair and blood samples and completed psychometric inventories (Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and Psychologica

Sexual life impact evaluation of different hormonal contraceptives on the basis of their methods of administration.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare sexual satisfaction with the use of three types of hormonal contraceptives. METHODS: We have evaluated the sexological profile of 23 patients, treated with a subdermal hormonal contraceptive containing 68 mg etonogestrel. We have compared this profile to that of other two groups of previously studied patients: one consisting of 26 women treated with a vaginal ring releasing 120 µg/day of etonogestrel and 15 µg/day of ethinylestradiol (EE) and one consisting of 25 women treated with an oral contraceptive containing 20 µg of EE and 150 µ

Assessment of Contraceptive Counseling and Contraceptive Use in Women After Bariatric Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive-aged women are, according to American and European guidelines, recommended to avoid pregnancy for 12-24 months after bariatric surgery. Oral contraceptives may have suboptimal efficacy after malabsorptive bariatric procedures. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess contraceptive use pre- and postoperatively in women who underwent bariatric surgery in two obesity clinics in The Netherlands. Also, the recall of contraceptive and pregnancy counseling was investigated. METHODS: A validated questionnaire was performed among women aged 18-45 years who underwent bariatric

Contraception - common issues and practical suggestions.

BACKGROUND: General practitioners are usually the first point-of-contact for young people seeking sexual health and contraceptive advice. Although the combined oral contraceptive pill is still the most common choice for contraception by Australian women, there is an increasing drive to encourage the consideration and use of long acting reversible contraception. OBJECTIVE: This article focuses on common issues that may complicate contraceptive management and provides some practical suggestions for effectively managing the use of different contraceptive methods, particularly in young women. Understanding prescription adherence: pharmacy claims data from the Contraceptive CHOICE Project.

BACKGROUND: We examined prescription adherence rates by contraceptive method among women who used oral contraceptive pills (OCP), transdermal patch or vaginal ring. STUDY DESIGN: Women in the St. Louis area were provided their choice of OCP, patch or ring at no cost and followed for 18 months. Time between monthly refills was obtained from pharmacy data and analyzed as a marker of adherence. Risk factors for initial nonadherence were estimated using Cox proportional hazards; predictors for repeated nonadherence were analyzed using Poisson regression with robust error variance. RESULTS: Overa

Blood management strategies in congenital Glanzmann thrombasthenia at a hematology referral center.

BACKGROUND: Glanzmann thrombasthenia is associated with abnormalities in the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor. This study, conducted at Ampang Hospital, Malaysia, aimed to assess outcomes of blood management strategies for Glanzmann thrombasthenia. METHODS: Ten patients with Glanzmann thrombasthenia aged 9 years (2009‒2018) were examined. Data on clinical characteristics, transfusion practices, and patient blood management were obtained from medical records. Patient blood management methods included parenteral iron, erythropoietin, hormonal pills, intrauterine progesterone contraceptive devices

Contraceptive use and attitudes in Great Britain.

In order to update current knowledge on contraceptive use and attitudes in Great Britain (i.e. England, Scotland and Wales), a survey was conducted among 1753 randomly selected British women aged 15-45. Replies were received from 967 women (55.2%). Seventy-three percent (73%) of fertile, sexually active women who wished to avoid pregnancy were using reliable methods of contraception, viz. oral contraceptives (OCs), intrauterine devices (IUDs) or sterilization. However, it was found that adolescents and women over 40 who wished to avoid pregnancy were, nevertheless, especially likely not to be

Safety testing of Ovaprene: An investigational nonhormonal monthly vaginal contraceptive.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the safety of Ovaprene, an investigational nonhormonal vaginal contraceptive designed for monthly use. STUDY DESIGN: Open-label, multicenter study enrolling heterosexually-active women with previous permanent contraception who underwent assessments during five menstrual cycles: baseline postcoital test cycle, diaphragm postcoital test cycle, Ovaprene safety cycle, and two Ovaprene postcoital test cycles. Safety outcomes included treatment-emergent adverse events, systemic laboratory findings, pelvic examinations, colposcopies, Nugent scores, determination of community sta

Female university students in Sweden: sex, contraception and STDs.

Female university students (n = 241) visiting the Student Health Center participated in a study concerning sexual behavior (study I). A randomized postal survey (study II) with similar questions was also performed to verify the findings in the first study (n = 137). The mean age was 23 years in both studies. Sexual experience was reported by 96% in study I and 87% in study II. Mean age at first intercourse and mean number of partners were similar; 17.6 years and 6 partners, respectively. Change of contraceptive type was frequent, and about one third had done so within the past two years. A com

Three-year efficacy and safety of a new 52-mg levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system.

OBJECTIVE: To assess 3-year data on the efficacy and safety of a new 52-mg levonorgestrel intrauterine contraceptive (LNG20) designed for up to 7 years use. STUDY DESIGN: Nulliparous and parous women aged 16-45 years at enrollment with regular menstrual cycles and requesting contraception were enrolled in an open-label, partially randomized trial to evaluate LNG20. The primary outcome was pregnancy rate for women aged 16-35 years calculated as the Pearl Index. Women aged 36-45 years received LNG20 for safety evaluation only. All participants had in-person or phone follow-up approximately ever
