Internal and external antecedents of binge eating episodes in a group of women with bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: This research examined the internal and external factors that predict whether a food craving develops into a binge in bulimia nervosa. METHOD: Fifteen bulimic women kept diary records of food cravings over the course of a week, noting their internal state, environmental triggers, and whether the craving developed into a binge. Eighty cravings were examined, of which approximately one half developed into binges. RESULTS: At the bivariate level, binge eating resulted from cravings more often if the women were alone, in the morning, and following eating the craved food. These factors…

Glucose intake reduces alcohol craving and amplifies habituation to cue-induced brain activation in male patients with alcohol use disorder: A randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study examining male and female patients with AUD.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence suggests a role of appetite-regulating hormones in alcohol use disorder. Reductions in acylated ghrelin levels are associated with reductions in craving and cue-induced brain activity. Ghrelin levels can be physiologically decreased by glucose intake, which therefore could be a treatment reducing craving and cue-induced brain activity in patients with alcohol use disorder, potentially mediated by acylated ghrelin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 80 males and females with alcohol use disorder participated in the randomized placebo-controlled crossover study, examining glucose inta…

Unravelling gender differences in cannabis cue-reactivity in individuals who use cannabis.

The development of cannabis use disorder (CUD) shows notable gender differences. While men have a higher overall prevalence of CUD, women transition more rapidly from initial use to CUD and often present with more severe psychiatric symptoms when seeking treatment. Despite these clinical observations, research into the neural mechanisms underlying these gender differences remains limited. This study aimed to investigate gender-dependent differences in neural cue-reactivity and session-induced craving (change in craving from the beginning to end of the experimental session) among regular cannab…

[Pathological gambling. An empirical study of the desire for addictive substances].

Drug craving, the irresistible urge for drug intake, is being discussed as a central construct for the explanation of addictive behaviour and for relapses so far only in substance-related addiction. Based on learning models for the maintenance of addiction, in this study, cue-induced craving and psychological variables that influence craving were investigated in subjects with excessive rewarding behaviour such as pathological gambling. Based on the cue-reactivity paradigm, pathological gamblers and healthy controls were exposed to gambling and other cues. Emotional processing of the gambling c…

Biofeedback combined with cue-exposure as a treatment for heroin addicts.

The aim of this study was to test if cue-exposure therapy (CET) combined with biofeedback therapy (BT) could decrease craving and physiological reactivity to drug-related cues in heroin dependents. Forty-five participants were randomly assigned to usual rehabilitation with or without CET combined with BT. Craving was assessed by a 100-point visual analog scale (VAS). Skin conductance (SC) and muscle electromyography (MEG) were recorded using a biofeedback device. After 2 months of treatment, both the pre-cue exposure craving and the post-cue exposure craving, SC, and MEG were lower in the expe…

Are There Neural Overlaps of Reactivity to Illegal Drugs, Tobacco, and Alcohol Cues? With Evidence From ALE and CMA.

Abuses of most illegal drugs, including methamphetamine, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and polydrug, are usually in conjunction with alcohol and tobacco. There are similarities and associations between the behavior, gene, and neurophysiology of such abusers, but the neural overlaps of their cue-reactivity and the correlation of neural overlap with drug craving still needs to be further explored. In this study, an Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) was performed on brain activation under legal (tobacco, alcohol) and illegal drug cues, for identifying the similarities in brain functions betwee…

Brain connectomics markers for response prediction to transcranial magnetic stimulation in cocaine use disorder.

Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a worldwide health problem with limited effective treatment options. The therapeutic potential of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is gaining more attention following evidence of its role on craving reduction in CUD. However, the heterogeneity of results underscores a pressing need for biomarkers of treatment outcome. We asked whether brain connectomics together with clinical assessments can predict response to add-on rTMS therapy for CUD better than solely conventional clinical assessments. Forty-four randomly assigned CUD patients underwent th…

Evaluation of a physical activity program for pathological gamblers in treatment.

It has been demonstrated that craving for gambling is associated with anxiety and depression in pathological gamblers. Exercise has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression, as well as positively influence abstinence rates in individuals with substance use disorders. In this study, we examined the impact of a physical activity program in 33 pathological gamblers. We also analyzed the association between craving and plasmatic levels of stress hormones (adrenocorticotropic hormone, cortisol, and prolactin). The program involved eight 50-min sessions. Craving was assessed 24 h before, immediat…

A Serial Mediation Analysis of Delay Discounting and Remission in Substance Use Disorders Recovery.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the mechanisms that support or undermine substance use disorders (SUDs) recovery is essential. We examine the direct and indirect associations between delay discounting and three-month remission among individuals in recovery from SUDs. METHODS: Participants (N = 316) from the International Quit & Recovery Registry completed demographics, measures of distress tolerance, craving, and delay discounting. Remission from SUDs was defined as no DSM-5 SUD symptoms except craving in the past three months. Zero-order correlations were utilized to investigate associations among…

The role of affective learning biases in daily food behaviour.

Cravings contribute to eating behaviours and health, yet how they emerge and translate into consumption remains unclear. Individual biases in how we learn to assign value to cues and actions, through Pavlovian conditioning (sign-tracking and goal-tracking) and reinforcement learning (model-free and model-based), provide a framework for exploring these behaviours. Cravings, emerging from associations between environmental cues and physiological responses, may be amplified by learning biases enhancing the cues' salience (i.e., sign-tracking bias) and habitual behaviour (i.e., model-free). Learni…

Presentation of smoking-associated cues does not elicit dopamine release after one-hour smoking abstinence: A [11C]-(+)-PHNO PET study.

The presentation of drug-associated cues has been shown to elicit craving and dopamine release in the striatum of drug-dependent individuals. Similarly, exposure to tobacco-associated cues induces craving and increases the propensity to relapse in tobacco- dependent smokers. However, whether exposure to tobacco-associated cues elicits dopamine release in the striatum of smokers remains to be investigated. We hypothesized that presentation of smoking-related cues compared to neutral cues would induce craving and elevation of intrasynaptic dopamine levels in subregions of the striatum and that t…

Interplay between alcohol cues and mood states during early abstinence: A daily diary study.

The present study examined the association of mood states, alcohol cue exposure, and their synergistic effect on alcohol consumption and subjective craving during early abstinence. A community sample of 50 (24 females, average age 41.68 years old) individuals with current alcohol use disorder and an intrinsic motivation to reduce/quit alcohol use completed a quit attempt and daily diary assessments (DDAs). Electronic DDAs asked about previous-day drinking, alcohol craving, mood states, and exposure to alcohol cues. Analyses using mixed models tested the main effects and synergistic effects of …

Both active and sham low-frequency rTMS single sessions over the right DLPFC decrease cue-induced cravings among pathological gamblers seeking treatment: A randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled crossover trial.

Background Craving is a core symptom of addictive disorders, such as pathological gambling for example. Over the last decade, several studies have assessed the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in the addiction field, which triggers the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) to decrease craving. The STIMJEU study investigated whether a single session of low-frequency (LF, i.e., 1 Hz) rTMS applied to the right DLPFC reduced cue-induced gambling craving in a sample of treatment-seeking pathological gamblers. Methods Thirty patients received both active and sham rTMS…

Infant caregiving, relational factors, mood, and pain in perinatal opioid use disorder: A prospective cohort with ecological momentary assessment.

Evidence-based opioid use disorder (OUD) relapse prevention interventions designed to the unique needs of the postpartum period are lacking. We aimed to identify novel intervention targets using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) with Bayesian mixed-effects models to assess infant caregiving (e.g., skin-to-skin contact), relational factors (e.g., loneliness), and individual factors (e.g., pain): (1) by OUD status, and (2) in relation to craving and coping. Participants with and without OUD (OUD+ and OUD-, respectively) were followed from late pregnancy to postpartum week 12 with daily EMA a…
