Heat Shock Factor TaHSFA6e Interacts With TaNAC019 to Activate TaHSP70 Expression and Positively Contributes to Salt Stress in Wheat.

Soil salinization, exacerbated by seawater intrusion and climate change, poses a major constraint on crop production. To cope with salt stress, plants have evolved complex mechanisms involving numerous tolerance-related genes. We identified that heat shock protein TaHSP70 acted as a positive regulator in response to salt stress in wheat. Further analysis revealed that heat shock transcription factor TaHSFA6e and NAC transcription factor TaNAC019 physically interact and function additively to activate TaHSP70 expression. Whereas a single-nucleotide T insertion within the coding sequence of TaNA…

'Bud to fruit'-hormonal interactions governing early fruit development.

Hormones are fundamental architects of plant reproduction, orchestrating the transition from pollination to fruit set. Recent advances have underscored the central roles of auxin and gibberellins in ovary growth, seed development, and parthenocarpy, while their intricate interplay with cytokinin, ethylene, abscisic acid, brassinosteroids, jasmonic acid, and salicylic acid fine-tunes early fruit development. A dynamic regulatory network involving transcription factors, miRNAs, and hormone-responsive genes modulates these processes, ensuring coordinated cellular events across diverse fruit types

Nitrogen-doped ordered mesoporous carbons based on covalent triazine framework as the dopant for biodiesel production.

N-Doped mesoporous carbons, NMCs, have attracted the growing interest of many scientists in various scientific fields, including catalysis and energy conversion/storage. The NMCs were prepared using the template method, SBA-15 as the template, and covalent triazine framework as carbon and nitrogen precursors. These NMC materials exhibit high catalytic activity in the metal-free catalytic esterification of methanol and biodiesel with a total yield of up to 94% at 80˚C in 5 h. The recycled N-doped mesoporous carbons had no obvious change in catalytic performance after four consecutive cycles, in

Biolistic Transformation of Japonica Rice Varieties.

Genetic improvement of rice is crucial to achieve global food security as rice is an important staple crop for more than half of the global population. One of the methodologies for genetic improvement is biolistic delivery of genetic components into plant cells. In this chapter, we describe steps involved in introducing plasmid DNA carrying gene of interest into rice mature embryos using Biolistic® PDS-1000/He particle delivery system. We also provide information required for recovery of transformed plants and production of transgenic seed for next generation analysis. Using this protocol, typ

Screening of broad spectrum natural pesticides against conserved target arginine kinase in cotton pests by molecular modeling.

Cotton is an economically important crop and its production is challenged by the diversity of pests and related insecticide resistance. Identification of the conserved target across the cotton pest will help to design broad spectrum insecticide. In this study, we have identified conserved sequences by Expressed Sequence Tag profiling from three cotton pests namely Aphis gossypii, Helicoverpa armigera, and Spodoptera exigua. One target protein arginine kinase having a key role in insect physiology and energy metabolism was studied further using homology modeling, virtual screening, molecular do

Cotton farming affects ileal virome in a sedentary wild passerine.

Although a few studies have focused on avian gut virome variation in response to environmental stressors, none have assessed virome in relation to the production of chemically intensive crop-based agriculture that alters food resources and detrimentally affects various aspects of avian health and fitness. In this study, we used shotgun metatranscriptomics to assess whether exposure to cotton (Gossypium spp.) production had a deleterious effect on the ileal virome of sedentary northern mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos) sampled from two cotton-producing areas (16 birds in total) and one uncultiva

Nitrate reductase-mediated nitric oxide synthesis in shaping stress resilience in plants.

Nitrate reductase (NR), a key enzyme in nitrogen metabolism, catalyses reductive nitric oxide (NO) production in plants. However, the functional roles of NR and NR-mediated NO evolution in shaping stress adaptation in plants remain largely elusive. In recent years, significant progress has been made in NR research, leading to the identification of (i) specific physiological conditions under which NR-mediated NO production takes place, (ii) signaling proteins associated with the activation of NR, and (iii) various post-translational modifications that affect the activity and stability of NR. Em

Light mowing supports fine-root production in a temperate saline-alkaline grassland soil.

The dynamic changes and differential responses of roots - an important research hotspot in belowground ecology-are one of the most fascinating yet elusive focuses in terrestrial ecology. We conducted a two-year field experiment in a temperate saline-alkaline grassland soil of northern China to generalize the effects of mowing intensity on root production, mortality, standing crop, turnover, and lifespan. Four mowing intensities were established, including no mowing, light mowing, moderate mowing, and heavy mowing. Fine root dynamics were monitored in situ using the root-window method at 15-day

Towards the Recognition of Ethiopian Teff (Eragrostis tef [Zucc.] Trotter) Flour Under the European Union Geographical Indications System.

This paper explores the potential for promoting Ethiopian teff flour through the European Union's Geographical Indications (GI) framework. After outlining the evolution of GI regulations in the international trade context and the EU's role in quality policy for agri-food products, the paper assesses the value of teff as a high-potential product. Originated and domesticated around Axum, teff is a staple crop in Ethiopia, both nutritionally and socio-economically, cultivated by a multitude of smallholder farmers. However, access to European markets is hindered by insufficient enforcement of food

Change in the quality of diet during pregnancy in comparison with WHO and EU recommendations--environmental and sociodemographic conditions.

The organism of a pregnant woman constitutes the environment for the developing embryo. The outside world influencing the mother's organism affects not only her health but also her unborn baby's health. The aim of the work is to analyze the qualitative changes in pregnant women's diet and to specify the sociodemographic and environmental conditions determining the quality of the diet. The research was carried out among 150 pregnant women who came to randomly chosen antenatal clinics in Lublin. The tool used for research was a personally designed questionnaire. The average consumption of partic

Geographically Disperse, Culturable Seed-Associated Microbiota in Forage Plants of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and Pitch Clover (Bituminaria bituminosa L.): Characterization of Beneficial Inherited Strains as Plant Stress-Tolerance Enhancers.

Agricultural production is being affected by increasingly harsh conditions caused by climate change. The vast majority of crops suffer growth and yield declines due to a lack of water or intense heat. Hence, commercial legume crops suffer intense losses of production (20-80%). This situation is even more noticeable in plants used as fodder for animals, such as alfalfa and pitch trefoil, since their productivity is linked not only to the number of seeds produced, but also to the vegetative growth of the plant itself. Thus, we decided to study the microbiota associated with their seeds in differ

Evaluation of the Efficacy of Two New Biotechnological-Based Freeze-Dried Fertilizers for Sustainable Fe Deficiency Correction of Soybean Plants Grown in Calcareous Soils.

Currently, fertilization with synthetic chelates is the most effective agricultural practice to prevent iron (Fe) deficiencies in crops, especially in calcareous soils. Because these compounds are not biodegradable, they are persistent in the environment, and so, there is the risk of metal leaching from the soils. Thus, new, more environment-friendly efficient solutions are needed to solve iron-deficiency-induced chlorosis (IDIC) in crops grown in calcareous soils. Therefore, the central aim of this work was to prepare new freeze-dried Fe products, using a biotechnological-based process, from

Evaluation of Commercial Agrochemicals as New Tools for Malaria Vector Control.

Malaria is a vector-borne and life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. The vector control insecticide market represents a small fraction of the crop protection market and is estimated to be valued at up to $500 million at the active ingredient level. Insecticide resistance towards the current WHOPES-approved products urgently requires the development of new tools to protect communities against the transmission of malaria. The evaluation of commercial products for malaria vector control is a viable and

Expanding the Eco-collection of Methane-oxidizing Bacteria Inhabiting Rice Roots: Cultivation, Isolation, and Genomic Characterization of Isolates.

Flooded rice fields are a major source of atmospheric methane, a strong greenhouse gas second only to carbon dioxide. Rice roots are one of the most important hotspots for methane oxidation in rice fields. However, limited information is available on the physiological and genomic characteristics of methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) inhabiting rice roots. In the present study, we isolated MOB from rice roots and characterized the strains phenotypically and genomically. We obtained 100 MOB-enriched cultures from the roots of three rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L. subsp. japonica cv. Nipponbare, O.

Incorporating orange-fleshed sweet potato into the food system as a strategy for improved nutrition: The context of South Africa.

Orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) is considered the single most successful example of biofortification of a staple crop, and presents a feasible option to address vitamin A deficiency. Though initially promoted as part of a crop-based approach focusing on production and consumption at household level, it evolved into small-scale commercial production, predominantly in Sub-Saharan Africa. This paper reviews OFSP initiatives in relation to the South African food environment and food supply systems, also identifying opportunities for scaling out OFSP in a situation where sweet potato is not eate

Biological Suppression of the Sugarbeet Cyst Nematode in Broccoli Fields Along California's Central Coast.

The Central Coast of California is a large geographic region that includes some of the state's most fertile agricultural lands. The sugarbeet cyst nematode (Heterodera schachtii) was introduced to this region soon after sugar beet production was initiated, possibly as early as the late 1800s. Several susceptible host crops are currently grown in these coastal fields, including members of the Brassicaceae, such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower, as well as members of the Chenopodiaceae, such as spinach and Swiss chard. Over the last several decades, H. schachtii populations in this region h

Recent Progress in the Synthesis of Succinate Dehydrogenase Inhibitors: From Pyrazole-Coupled Carboxamides and Beyond.

A growing global population and increasingly stringent food-security demands, together with evolving challenges such as crop diseases, resistant weeds, and agrochemical-resistant pathogenic microorganisms, require new strategies to safeguard agricultural productivity. Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH, also known as complex II) participates in both the tricarboxylic acid cycle and the mitochondrial respiratory chain in pathogenic fungi, thereby affecting fungal metabolism and mitochondrial respiration. This enzyme has therefore been widely explored as a target in the search for new fungicides. Curr
