This article presents the methodology and baseline findings of a large multicenter trial involving four countries from Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, and Mexico). The study was a randomized, controlled, single-masked trial to investigate the impact of social support during pregnancy on perinatal outcomes. The indirect immunofluorescence test was used to study the level of humoral antibodies against viral capsid antigen of the Epstein--Barr virus (VCA-EBV), and early antigen (EA) in the sera of 322 healthy donors of the Havana City province. 8 patients with paludism diagnosis due to Plasmodium vivax and deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase that should receive antipaludism radical treatment with primaquine were studied. It was determined that 87.5% of the patients presented hemolysis but its relation with the enzymatic activity was not significant (p > 0.05). 50% of the patients could not finish their treatment because of the appearance of important hemolysis. It is concluded that primaquine should not be used indiscriminately among those patients with deficit of glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase.

A seroepidemiological study of Toxoplasma gondii was carried out in four municipalities of Havana Province from October 1990 to April 1991 using a 10 microL ultra micro-ELISA. We tested 362 serum samples, from pregnant women, and 71% of toxoplasmic infection was found. Toxoplasmic infection was more frequent in women living in rural zones having domestic contacts with cats. The relationship of toxoplasmic infection and spontaneous abortion antecedent in this group was analyzed but no statistically significant differences were found.

Leptospirosis is at present an ever-increasing problem in human and animal health. By means of the Korthof medium, 43 Leptospira strains were isolated from samples of human blood, water and soil. For their identification the microagglutination technique was used. The strains corresponded to the species Leptospira biflexa and Leptospira interrogans.
