BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease is caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus or Echinococcus multilocularis or Echinococcus Vogeli. It is the most severe helminthic zoonosis, with a major medical, social, and economic burden in endemic areas such as the Mediterranean region, South America, Australia, Turkey, New Zealand, Alaska, Canada, and the Middle East. The cornerstone in the management of hydatid cysts is surgery, and its recurrence is due mainly to the spillage of hydatid scolices rich fluid into the surrounding tissues.
AIM: In this study, we test a polymer benefit in intraoperative s

Spontaneous rupture of a hydatid cyst is reported in a 19-year-old cattleman. Mechanical ventilation for respiratory failure and a right lower lobectomy were required for flooding of the airway with hydatid cyst fluid. The postoperative course was complicated by the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome. Complete recovery occurred with no recurrence following treatment with albendazole, praziquantel and partial hepatectomy.

We report a case of a simple cyst in the upper pole and connected to the mediastinum testis at the rete testis. The cyst appeared to arise from a dilated rete duct, and it was spherical, smooth-walled and filled with clear fluid. The epithelium was lined with a single layer of cuboidal or flattened cells, with no evidence of squamous differentiation.

Personal experience of 236 breast cyst aspirations is reported. In 224 cases, insufflation was also successful and pneumocystomammography was carried out, associated always with cytological examination of the aspirated fluid. In 2 cases, the examination made possible a diagnosis of cyst degeneration (0.8%). The number of recurrences was minimal (2.8%). It is concluded that the technique is diagnostically and therapeutically useful.

The cyst of the canal of Nuck, also known as a female hydrocele, is an uncommon anomaly caused by the incomplete obliteration of the processus vaginalis in females during fetal development. Because its presentation is nonspecific and resembles other groin pathologies, it is frequently misdiagnosed. We report the case of a 33-year-old woman with a gradually enlarging, mildly painful swelling in the left groin. Imaging revealed a well-defined fluid-filled structure located within the left inguinal canal, which was removed through an open anterior approach, as it provides direct anatomical exposu

In autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), arginine vasopressin (AVP) accelerates cyst growth by stimulating cAMP-dependent ERK activity and epithelial cell proliferation and by promoting Cl(-)-dependent fluid secretion. Tolvaptan, a V2 receptor antagonist, inhibits the renal effects of AVP and slows cyst growth in PKD animals. Here, we determined the effect of graded concentrations of tolvaptan on intracellular cAMP, ERK activity, cell proliferation, and transcellular Cl(-) secretion using human ADPKD cyst epithelial cells. Incubation of ADPKD cells with 10(-9) M AVP increased i

Cholesterol granuloma and cholesteatoma are the two most common destructive lesions of the petrous apex. Arachnoid cyst is much less common. These three expansile lesions are often indistinguishable on clinical grounds. Accurate pre-operative radiological diagnosis on computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging is important in order to plan the appropriate treatment. Pre-operative radiological differential diagnosis between primary cholesteatoma of petrous apex and a intrapetrous arachnoid cyst remains a significant problem. The following aspects need evaluation for recognition of

Parathyroid cysts are relatively uncommon lesions. Approximately 200 cases have been reported. Despite their location in the region of the thyroid gland, they have not previously been discussed in the otolaryngologic literature. They arise from remnants of the pharyngeal pouch or as a result of cystic degeneration of a parathyroid adenoma. A case of a parathyroid cyst occurring in a 13-year-old female is presented. This is the youngest case ever reported. Fine needle aspiration of an anterior neck mass yielded clear fluid, a finding highly suggestive of a parathyroid cyst. Radioimmunoassay of

Intracranial dermoid and epidermoid cysts are usually considered to be two different entities in the radiological and surgical literature. Epidermoid cysts are classically off midline in location, isointense to cerebrospinal fluid on T1 and T2-weighted images and have restricted diffusion, whereas dermoid cysts are classically midline in location, have T1-hyperintense regions due to the presence of fat and show facilitated diffusion. We report a case of radiological epidermoid cyst in baseline imaging, which evolved into a radiological dermoid cyst over time, and explain this unique occurrence

Baker's cysts are fluid distensions of the gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa and are the most common cystic lesion around the knee. Typically cysts enlarge along intermuscular planes around the knee. We report three cases in which the expanding cyst did not respect these planes and dissected along an intramuscular route as confirmed by MR imaging. Such behaviour by Baker's cysts is hitherto unreported in the literature. Possible mechanisms to account for this phenomenon are discussed.

Minocycline hydrochloride was percutaneously instilled into simple renal cysts to prevent recurrence of renal cysts after the puncture and aspiration of cystic fluid. Fifty-six simple renal cysts in 51 patients were punctured with an 18-gauge needle under ultrasonographic guidance, and the cystic fluid was aspirated under fluoroscopic control. A single 100 mg or 200 mg dose of minocycline hydrochloride dissolved in 5 ml of distilled water was instilled through the needle into the renal cyst. The patients were followed up by computed tomographic (CT) scan and ultrasonography 1, 3, 6 and 12 mont

The pharmacokinetics of albendazole was evaluated in 11 patients with hydatid disease who underwent surgery 12 h after the last dose of drug. Albendazole and its main metabolite, albendazole-sulphoxide, were assayed in the serum from peripheral and portal blood, the liver, bile, lungs, and hydatid cyst walls and fluid. After a 10-14 mg/kg daily oral dose of albendazole, concentrations of 1844 +/- 904 ng/g wet tissue of albendazole-sulphoxide were found in the liver and 749 +/- 34 ng/g wet tissue in the lungs. The level in hydatid cyst fluid was 921 +/- 314 ng/ml. The drug was also excreted thr…

Echinococcus granulosus, which causes cystic echinococcosis, is an uncommon condition in the United States. We report a case of a 78-year-old Caucasian female who presented to her primary care physician in 1999 with right upper quadrant pain. She had a history of frequent foreign travel. Abdominal imaging demonstrated a 12.5-cm hepatic cyst. The cyst was drained and the pathology report on the fluid indicated no bacterial, parasitic, or malignant etiology. Serology tests for Entamoeba and Echinococcus antibodies were negative. The patient underwent multiple hepatic cyst aspirations until 2008

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old female Miniature Horse was evaluated for progressive unilateral exophthalmia of the left globe of 3 weeks' duration.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Results of a physical examination were unremarkable. Ophthalmic examination identified exophthalmus of the left globe with complete resistance to retropulsion and mild blepharoconjunctivitis. Computed tomography revealed a large, space-occupying mass within the left caudal maxillary and left conchofrontal sinuses. The mass extended into the left retrobulbar space and contacted the cribriform plate. Trephination yielded copious

Bronchogenic cysts are common cystic lesions in the mediastinum. Most are located in the middle or posterior ares of the mediastinum, especially around the carina. We encountered a patient with a mass in the superior and anterior areas of the mediastinum, where bronchogenic cysts are not usually found. The mass was therefore, thought to be a thymic cyst. The cyst was located just behind the sternum and in front of the left brachio-cephalic vein, and was 5.5 x 3.5 x 1.2 cm. It originated in the upper and median part of the thymus, and was not attached to the respiratory tract. Histological exam

Background and Clinical Significance: A paratubal cyst, which makes up about 10% of all adnexal masses, is a specific type of adnexal cyst that develops from the mesothelium in the broad ligament located between the fallopian tube and the ovary. Interestingly, the majority of paratubal cyst cases are initially misidentified as ovarian cysts, with suspicion arising in only 1 out of every 15 patients before undergoing surgery. Case Presentation: We report a case of a giant paratubal cyst mimicking an ovarian cyst in a 21-year-old woman supported by some representative images along with a literat

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar cyst formation after surgery is uncommon, and few cases of this condition have been previously reported. These cases had an intraparenchymal cyst in the cerebellar hemisphere that required surgical fenestration of the cyst. We herein present a rare case of a postoperative cerebellar cyst with pseudomeningocele and magnetic resonance images indicating a fistula between the cyst and pseudomeningocele.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A patient presented with an intraparenchymal cyst and surrounding edema in the cerebellar hemisphere that developed after a C1 laminectomy and a small subo

Abdominal pseudocysts are common complications of ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS). We report the case of a 37-year-old woman treated by VPS for congenital obstructive hydrocephalus, who presented shunt dysfunction related to a voluminous abdominal cyst initially diagnosed as cerebrospinal fluid pseudocyst. The cyst was drained and the VPS was removed after endoscopic third ventriculocisternostomy (ETV). A few months later, a large new abdominal cyst appeared and was operated on. Diagnosis was rectified as massive ovarian mucinous cystadenoma. In any intra-abdominal cyst, differential diagnose

Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which apparently develops by accumulation of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown of an unerupted tooth. Management of dentigerous cyst in primary dentition needs special consideration regarding the preservation of the developing permanent tooth buds. A case of dentigerous cyst is reported in primary dentition of a 7-year-old female patient and its management. By extracting the infected primary teeth, opening the cyst and ensuring continuous drainage, it is possible to achieve spontaneous eruption of the involved
