Auricular acupressure with five-element music therapy reduces labor pain and short-term postpartum depression: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Labor pain and postpartum depression (PPD) are prevalent peripartum complications affecting mothers globally. Conventional interventions for pain management are often limited by contraindications or side effects. PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the effects of auricular acupressure combined with five-element music therapy (FEMT) in alleviating labor pain and reducing PPD incidence. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial enrolled 146 parturients with singleton cephalic pregnancy preparing for vaginal delivery. Participants were randomly assigned to either the treatment g

Effectiveness of a web-based preventive postpartum depression programme in pregnancy, with/without telephone support: a randomised control trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a web-based secondary prevention programme for postpartum depression, delivered with or without telephone support, compared with usual care. DESIGN: We first conducted a randomised controlled superiority trial to test whether the web-based Parents and Babies programme (Toi, Moi, Bébé; TMB) delivered with motivational telephone support (ie, coaching) was superior to the fully automated programme (ie, self-help). TMB incorporated classic and third-wave cognitive-behavioural therapy components and psychoeducation. Then, we tested whether TMB (both trea

Preeclampsia as an Independent and Major Risk Factor for Significant Postpartum Depression Symptomatology: Results from a Prospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Preeclampsia is a severe hypertensive disorder that has been linked to increased maternal psychiatric morbidity. However, existing literature remains inconsistent regarding whether this association is independent of underlying medical co-morbidities such as chronic hypertension and diabetes. Our objective was to precisely evaluate the Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) of developing Postpartum Depression symptomatology (probable PPD) following a diagnosis of preeclampsia in a prospectively tracked cohort, controlling for essential confounders. Methods: This prospective cohort stu

A Quasi-Experimental Study: Social Support in Group Prenatal Care's Impact on Postpartum Depression in Black and Hispanic Women.

Depression is a widespread mental health condition that affects millions of women globally. In the United States (U.S.), more than half of maternal mental health-related deaths occur during the postpartum period, making it the leading cause of mortality during this time. This urban U.S. single-site quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of social support integrated into group prenatal care as an intervention for postpartum depression. The study employed a dual methodological approach, combining prospective participant recruitment with a retrospective analysis of medical r

Dim light at night induces depression-like behaviors during the postpartum period through circadian rhythm related pathways in mice.

Growing evidence suggests that dim light at night (dLAN) may disrupt circadian rhythms and provoke symptoms of anxiety and depression. Due to the inconvenience of pregnancy and caring for infants, there is a high prevalence of dLAN exposure among pregnant and postpartum women. However, the role and circadian mechanism of dLAN on depression, and anxiety during the postpartum period remain unclear. Pregnant mice were housed in either a light-dark cycle (LD; 12 h of 200 lux:12 h of 0 lux) or a light-dLAN cycle (dLAN; 12 h of 200 lux:12 h of 5 lux) during the gestational and postpartum periods. Psychological Characteristics of Women with Perinatal Depression Who Require Psychiatric Support during Pregnancy or Postpartum: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Antenatal depression may be distinct from postpartum depression in terms of prevalence, severity of symptoms, comorbidities, prognosis, and risk factors. Although risk factors for perinatal depression have been identified, it is unclear whether there are differences in the onset of perinatal depression (PND). This study explored the characteristics of women requiring mental health support during pregnancy or postpartum. A sample of 170 women (58% in pregnancy; 42% postpartum) who contacted the SOS-MAMMA outpatient clinic was recruited. Clinical data sheets and self-report questionnaires (EPDS,
