A skin moisturizing cream containing Quaternium-18-Bentonite effectively improves chronic hand dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Irritant and allergic hand dermatitis is difficult to control in individuals who are unable to avoid causative exposures. Effectiveness of "protective" creams has been poor. OBJECTIVE: To determine if hand dermatitis, primarily of an occupational nature, could be improved by the use of a newly developed moisturizing cream containing Quaternium-18-Bentonite. METHODS: Adult male and female subjects with chronic hand dermatitis felt to be either allergic, irritant, or combined in nature, after a 2-week observation period, were given the study cream for routine application. At 2, 4,

Patch Test as a Diagnostic Tool in Hand Eczema.

INTRODUCTION: Allergic contact dermatitis is an important cause of hand eczema. Patch testing is the only investigation available to prove the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis. Exposures to allergens differ according to geographical, occupational, economic and social factors. Accordingly, patterns of allergic contact dermatitis differ in different parts of the world and different regions of the same country. AIM: To study the causes of allergic contact dermatitis in adult patients with hand eczema with the help of patch testing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study

Permanent press allergy in an active duty U.S. Army soldier.

Ethylene urea/melamine formaldehyde resin (permanent press) is a common fabric finishing agent added to Army Combat Uniforms for a wrinkle-free appearance and to strengthen the fabric. We describe the case of an active duty U.S. Army soldier with a diffuse eczematous dermatitis in whom patch testing was used to identify an allergy to permanent press, a ubiquitous fabric finishing agent in the Army combat uniform. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a soldier with an allergic contact dermatitis to ethylene urea/melamine formaldehyde resin. This case highlights the importance of c

[Dermatologic occupationally relevant type I allergies].

In Germany the most frequent initial report of occupational disease is due to occupational skin diseases ("Berufskrankheitenanzeige nach Nr. 5101 der Berufskrankheitenverordnung") defined as "severe or recurrent skin diseases that force the discontinuation of any activity that causes or that could be causing the development, the worsening, or the recurrence of the skin disease". The majority of these occupational skin diseases consists of irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. In contrast, work place- related Type I allergy (contact urticaria syndrome) is less frequent, but carries the risk

Phytophotodermatitis in grounds operatives.

Occupational dermatoses account for a significant proportion of work-related morbidity. Phytophotodermatitis is an unusual work-related dermatosis, but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of such conditions. An outbreak of 'strimmer rash' is described in three grounds operatives. The identification, aetiology and management of the condition are discussed.

A descriptive profile of eczema in a tertiary dermatological referral centre in Singapore.

A retrospective study of 25,448 new cases of patients with various types of eczemas seen over a two-year period (1989-1990) was conducted. This represented 34.1% of new cases (74,589) seen at the Centre. The M:F ratio was 1:1. Occupational and ethnic distribution did not differ from that of the total outpatient population. 67% were endogenous eczema. Among the endogenous eczema, the majority (70%) were either non-specified endogenous eczema, hand and feet eczema or atopic dermatitis. 13.7% were contact dermatitis. Of these, 50% were non-specified contact dermatitis, 39% were irritant contact d

Immunologic studies in a case of baker's asthma.

A 28-year-old baker with 13 years of occupational experience has developed, over the past several years, sinusitis, rhinitis, contact dermatitis, and asthma. Clinically, all of his symptoms were felt to be related to occupational exposure. Immunologic evaluation consisted of the following tests: intradermal skin testing, leukocyte histamine release, total serum IgE, PK transfer with immunoadsorption, and specific antigen bronchial challenge. Analysis of results would tend to implicate a type I, IgE-mediated immunologic reaction.

Immediate and delayed skin allergy from cow dander.

BACKGROUND: Cow dander is the most common cause of occupational contact urticaria in Finland. Occasionally cow dander also causes allergic contact dermatitis, which can be revealed by patch testing with cow dander. OBJECTIVE: A patient with a combined type I and type IV allergy to cow dander is the subject of this report. RESULTS: She had intense pruritus, whealing, and severe dermatitis, but no respiratory symptoms. Skin tests and radioallergosorbent test indicated that she had both type I and type IV allergy to cow dander. CONCLUSION: Increasing numbers of cases with both type I and type

Efficacy of a skin-protective foam in the treatment of chronic hand dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Irritant and/or allergic hand dermatitis in individuals who are unable to avoid causative exposures is difficult to control. Usefulness of protective creams has been generally unsatisfactory. OBJECTIVE: To determine if hand dermatitis, primarily of an occupational nature, could be improved by the use of a protective foam containing dimethicone and glycerin. METHODS: Adult male and female subjects with chronic hand dermatitis for at least 12 months, felt to be either allergic, irritant, or combined in nature were given the study foam for routine application after a 2-week observat

A survey of work-related skin diseases in different occupations in Poland.

Occupational skin disorders, in particular inflammations, dryness and erythema, in 80% of cases affect the skin of hands. The most frequent diagnosis, in over 90% of cases of occupational skin diseases, points to an irritant or allergic contact dermatitis. Our aim was to study the prevalence of self-reported skin symptoms on hands and forearms in different populations. The study was conducted on 581 healthcare workers, 61 hair stylists, 149 beauticians, 90 food services workers, 90 cleaners, 181 metal factory workers and 69 textile workers. Healthcare workers had greatest exposure. Eighty-six

Irritant hand dermatitis in health care workers.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of irritant contact dermatitis due to frequent hand washing and use of alcohol gel. This has increased the incidence of occupational skin diseases. AIMS: To evaluate hand dermatitis in HCWs in our hospital by means of a survey which also examined trends of exposure and the utility of patch testing. METHODS: HCWs diagnosed with hand dermatitis in our contact dermatitis clinic from January 2011 to July 2012 were included. Information was collected retrospectively from medical notes, computer records and the database of the British Cu

Prevalence and immunoreactivity of Schistosoma spindale-induced cercarial dermatitis among paddy farmers in Assam, India: A comprehensive molecular and proteomic study.

Cercarial dermatitis is an important occupational health problem among rice farmers in Assam and other parts of India. We surveyed 1657 paddy farmers from sixteen villages across four districts of Assam, Northeast India, to determine the prevalence of cercarial dermatitis. Of these, 555 (33.5%) reported dermatitis during the preceding three months, and a subset of affected farmers from Barpeta district showed a high proportion of moderate-to-severe disease, often complicated by secondary bacterial infection. Snail surveys were conducted in thirteen villages across eight districts. Examination

Occupational skin diseases from epoxy compounds. Epoxy resin compounds, epoxy acrylates and 2,3-epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride.

Of a total of 3731 patients investigated between 1974 and 1990, 1844 (49.4%) had an occupational skin disease. Of them 142 (7.7%) had an occupational skin disease caused by epoxy compounds--135 patients (95%) had allergic contact dermatitis, five had irritant contact dermatitis, and two had contact urticaria. Apart from dermatoses, two patients had IgE-mediated asthma from exposure to DGEBA epoxy resins. Thus epoxy compounds are one of the main causes of occupational allergic contact dermatoses and can be considered potential causes of occupational asthma. The most frequent causes were epoxy r

[Phytophotodermatitis. Some photobiological aspects of psoralens].

The frequency of plant dermatitis, in general, depends on the type of plants, the climate, occupation and lifestyle of the local inhabitants. Many plants produce adverse effects on the skin like irritation, allergic reactions and phototoxicity. Generally, allergic contact dermatitis is emphasized but it is necessary to give more attention to phototoxicity produced by plants. The patients may be exposed not only to the phototoxic plant itself but also to its derivatives in perfumes, cosmetics and industry.

Allergic Contact Dermatitis to 1,3-Diphenylguanidine Over a 23-Year Period: Recent Cases Involve Sterile Polyisoprene Gloves.

BACKGROUND: 1,3-Diphenylguanidine (DPG) is a known contact sensitiser and rubber vulcaniser. METHODS: A retrospective audit was performed including 2675 patients tested to 1% DPG in petrolatum between 2002 and 2024. The MOAHLFA index of those with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) was compared to the remainder of the patch test clinic population. Temporal changes in the prevalence of contact allergy and ACD to DPG were assessed. RESULTS: 50 (1.9%) patients had positive reactions to DPG on patch testing, with 31 (62% of positive reactions) diagnosed with ACD. In those with ACD, there was a si
