Beyond spaghetti and meatballs: skin diseases associated with the Malassezia yeasts.

Malassezia are common lipid-dependent fungi that grow on the sebaceous areas of human skin, including the face, scalp, and upper trunk. Although Malassezia are a part of the normal human skin flora, they may also cause or exacerbate several skin diseases, including tinea versicolor, Pityrosporum folliculitis, and seborrheic dermatitis. Topical antifungals are the mainstay of treating Malassezia-related diseases. Chronic prophylaxis is often required to prevent recurrences.

In vitro and in vivo synergistic inhibition of Malassezia furfur targeting cell membranes by Rosa rugosa Thunb. and Coptidis Rhizoma extracts.

BACKGROUND: Malassezia furfur (M. furfur) is a prevalent dermatophyte that significantly impairs patients' quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the synergistic antifungal effects of combined extracts from Rosa rugosa Thunb. (MG) and Coptidis Rhizoma (HL) against M. furfur, both in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to identify the major active compounds present in MG and HL. The antifungal activity of the combined Meilian extract (ML) was assessed using the checkerboard method and time-kill curves. Microstructural alterations in the fun

The practical usefulness of dermoscopy in general dermatology.

Beside to traditional use, dermoscopy is more and more used in the assessment of other "general" dermatologic conditions, namely scalp and hair disorders (trichoscopy), nails abnormalities (onychoscopy), skin infections and infestations (entomodermoscopy), and cutaneous inflammatory diseases (inflammoscopy). Among the list of new applications of dermoscopy, the study of inflammatory dermatoses is probably the most promising topic in terms of development and usefulness, considering the large number of such disorders and the frequent problems in their differential diagnosis which the dermatologi

Halo dermatitis around tumours.

Circular dermatitis around different benign or malignant lesions were examined in 19 patients. The morphological picture was the same whether it occurred around an acquired naevus cell naevus, a congenital naevus cell naevus, a seborrheic keratosis, a stucco-keratosis, a keloid, a benign lentigo, an insect bite, a basal cell carcinoma, or a squamous cell carcinoma. The central lesions were macroscopically unaffected by the surrounding inflammation.

Norwegian scabies in an infant with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

A 6-month-old infant with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and typical scabies subsequently developed Norwegian scabies, with deterioration of clinical status. The infestation spread to several health care workers who were in close contact with the patient, despite standard isolation precautions. In the rapidly growing hospitalized pediatric AIDS population, Norwegian scabies should be considered in the differential diagnosis of eczematous or seborrheic dermatitis.

Short-term treatment of dandruff with a combination of propylene glycol solution and shampoo.

Many studies now indicate an association between the lipophilic dimorphic yeast Pityrosporon ovale and dandruff. Propylene glycol has been proved effective in the treatment of pityriasis versicolor, Pityrosporon folliculitis, and seborrheic dermatitis. The patients in this study found treatment with a combination of propylene glycol, ethanol, and water, used with a shampoo, to be effective, easy to use, and cosmetically attractive. No side effects were observed by the patients.

Relationship of pityriasis amiantacea to psoriasis. A follow-up study.

46 patients with pityriasis aminantacea have been reexamined with regard to the later development of psoriasis and atopic diseases, and their occurrence in first and second degree relatives. HLA antigens of the A, B and C series were also determined. Earlier suggestions of a close association with psoriasis were not confirmed. An association with atopic diseases could not be established. Occurrence of seborrheic dermatitis seems, however, common in patients with pityriasis amiantacea.

Allergic contact dermatitis prevalence in patients with otitis externa.

A statistical analysis of the relationship between otitis externa and various clinical and etiological variables was carried out in 64 patients. Between 1988 and 1989, true eczema of the auditory canal was found in 43 of the 64 patients seen sequentially. 23.5% of all the patients found to have dermatitis could be regarded as having allergic contact dermatitis and the allergen identified. This incidence is less than the 40% and the 58% found in other previous studies. We did not find any specific difference in sex and age between the allergic and non-allergic groups. In the allergic group, top

Diaper (napkin) dermatitis: A fold (intertriginous) dermatosis.

Diaper (napkin) dermatitis is an acutely presenting inflammatory irritant contact dermatitis of the diaper region. It is one of the most common dermatologic diseases in infants and children. In the past, the disease was thought to be caused by ammonia; however, a number of factors, such as friction, wetness, inappropriate skin care, microorganisms, antibiotics, and nutritional defects, are important. Diaper dermatitis commonly affects the lower parts of the abdomen, thighs, and diaper area. Involvement of skin fold regions is typical with diaper dermatitis. At the early stages of the disease,

Autonomic Denervative Dermatitis in the Chin Area Following Mandibuloplasty.

Autonomic denervative dermatitis (ADD) is a rare skin condition caused by autonomic nerve injury, often after surgery. It typically presents as erythematous or excoriated lesions in areas with sensory loss. While cases in the lower limbs are documented, facial involvement after mandibuloplasty has not been reported. The authors describe a 27-year-old woman who developed ADD 1 year after angle-body reduction mandibuloplasty. She presented with pruritic, erythematous papules on the chin and sensory deficits. The lesions resolved spontaneously, leaving scarring and contour irregularities. Diagnos

Steroid acne and rebound phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: There have been many reports of topical steroids treatment for the face causing perioral dermatitis, steroid acne, and steroid rebound phenomenon. OBJECTIVE: To assess patient reported outcomes in patients receiving compounded topical (hydrocortisone 0.75% and precipitated sulfur 0.5%) lotion for up to 15 years for common dermatological conditions of the face. METHODS: In a retrospective study, 300 patients were randomly sampled from the dermatology clinic who had used, or were continuing to use, a lotion based, pharmacy-compounded topical preparation for the face. The use of sulfur in dermatology.

Sulfur has antifungal, antibacterial, and keratolytic activity. In the past, its use was widespread in dermatological disorders such as acne vulgaris, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, pityriasis versicolor, scabies, and warts. Adverse events associated with topically applied sulfur are rare and mainly involve mild application site reactions. Sulfur, used alone or in combination with agents such as sodium sulfacetamide or salicylic acid, has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of many dermatological conditions.

[In vitro blastogenic response of lymphocytes in pityriasis capitis and dermatitis seborrheica (using PHA-mitogen, Pityrosporum ovale and bacteria)].

63 patients with Pityriasis capitis (PC) "dandruff" and Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) as well as normal controls were studied. Antigenicity was checked "in vitro" by the lymphocytic transformation test. A significant transformation in the PC to P. ovale was observed while in SD it was to Stanphyloccocus and P. ovale. In view of results the authors suggest that there is a similar immunoalergic response in the host to those antigens. The clinic will differ according to the antigens. This is significant for a new local treatment and general.

Is the skin affected by work at visual display terminals?

According to some reports, mainly from Norway and Sweden, visual display terminal work is suspected of causing skin rashes. In three different studies, we have tried to elucidate the question, and the results indicate that there might be a relation between VDT work and aggravation of some common skin diseases such as rosacea, seborrheic and atopic dermatitis, and acne. Whether this depends on physical, chemical, or psychological factors is still unknown.

In vitro sensitivity of Malassezia furfur isolates from HIV-positive and negative patients to antifungal agents.

INTRODUCTION: Malassezia is a lipophilic and lipid-dependent yeast genus belonging to the skin microbiota of humans and other animals. However, due to dysbiosis processes or other factors in the host, this yeast can cause different pathologies, ranging from skin diseases, such as seborrheic dermatitis, to fungemia. Isolation of Malassezia furfur has been reported in HIV-positive patients with or without skin lesions. Due to its opportunistic nature and its variable resistance to antifungal compounds, it is relevant to know the Malassezia sensitivity profiles. OBJECTIVE: To determine the sensi

In vitro antifungal efficacy of ciclopirox olamine alone and associated with zinc pyrithione compared to ketoconazole against Malassezia globosa and Malassezia restricta reference strains.

The aim of this study was to determine the in vitro fungicidal and growth inhibitory activity of ciclopirox olamine alone (1% and 1.5%) or in association with 1% zinc pyrithione compared to 2% ketoconazole, against Malassezia species particularly involved in the pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis. Experiments were performed on Malassezia globosa IP 2387.96 and M. restricta IP 2392.96 strains. Growth inhibitory activity of the active compounds in solution was evaluated by measuring minimal inhibitory concentrations using a broth micro-method and their fungicidal activity by a filtration meth
