Developing an Open Multi-Domain Assessment Battery Using Laboratory Tasks for Children in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

Recent years have seen growing interest in the use of randomized designs to evaluate the impacts of interventions on early child development in low- and middle-income countries. Measuring these impacts requires assessments that can track development prior to school entry in settings that are often noisy and outdoors. Drawing from research in developmental cognitive science, we created an open multi-domain assessment battery for testing children in low- and middle-income countries consisting of tasks based on experimental paradigms used in laboratory settings. These tasks were designed to targe

Pneumococcal colonization rates in children and adults in two developing countries: A prospective cross-sectional hospital-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of lower respiratory infections, especially in children under 5 years old. While pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) have reduced disease burden in many countries, data from low- and middle-income countries are still limited. The objective of this prospective, hospital-based, cross -sectional study was to measure the prevalence of pneumococcal colonization and identify circulating serotypes among children <5 years and their caregivers in Cambodia and India. METHODS: Children aged 0-59 months free of severe respiratory infection accord

Early outcomes of experience warm surgery in children undergoing complete repair of tetralogy of Fallot in developing countries.

OBJECTIVES: While significant evidence supports the benefits of normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass (NCPB) over hypothermic techniques, many institutions in developing countries, including ours, continue to employ hypothermic methods. This study aimed to assess the early postoperative outcomes of normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass (NCPB) for complete surgical repair via the Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) within our national context. METHODS: We conducted this study in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) at the University Children's Hospital. One hundred patients who underwent comple…

Self-management needs, strategies and support for individuals with sickle cell disease in developing countries: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease (SCD) poses a significant global health burden, particularly affecting individuals in developing countries with constrained healthcare resources. While research on self-management in the context of SCD is emerging, it has predominantly focused on primary studies. The aim of the scoping review was to identify and map self-management needs of individuals living with SCD, the strategies they employed to meet those needs, and the support interventions available to them. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The review was conducted following the Askey and O'Malley's framework to…

Screening for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Is There a Need for Early Screening for All Women in Developing Countries?

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with significant adverse pregnancy outcomes. Early diagnosis and treatment have been proven to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes among women diagnosed with GDM. Current guidelines recommend routine screening for GDM at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy, with early screening offered to those considered high risk. However, risk stratification may not always be helpful for those who would benefit from early screening, especially in non-Western settings. AIM: To determine the need for early screening for GDM among pregnant women attending anten

Catheter test: A reliable alternative to assess adequacy of bladder management in patients of PUV in developing countries.

INTRODUCTION: Following posterior urethral valve ablation, persisting bladder dysfunction can lead to lack of improvement or worsening of hydronephrosis and as well, to lack of improvement or even worsening renal function. On the other hand, managing bladder dysfunction offers the possibility of lessening both the degree of hydronephrosis and the level of serum creatinine. As we have no available urodynamics we feel impelled to find other means of diagnosing and managing abnormal bladder dynamics in these boys. We wanted to determine if a short course of continuous bladder drainage would be an

Sun exposure as a strategy for acquiring vitamin D in developing countries of tropical region: Challenges & way forward.

Adopting sun exposure as a low-cost sustainable strategy in tropical countries needs critical analysis for its feasibility and inclusion in national policy. This review explores the opportunities and challenges associated with sun exposure in tropical countries and discusses potential strategies that may be adopted for promoting sun exposure. For this, two strands of evidence were reviewed; trials on sun exposure, analysed for risk of bias and, the environmental factors that influence acquisition of vitamin D from sun exposure in the context of on-going ecological and nutritional transition. An inventory-location optimization model for equitable influenza vaccine distribution in developing countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The addition of other respiratory illnesses such as flu could cripple the healthcare system during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. An annual seasonal influenza vaccine is the best way to help protect against flu. Fears of coronavirus have intensified the shortage of influenza shots in developing countries that hope to vaccinate many populations to reduce stress on their health services. We present an inventory-location mixed-integer linear programming model for equitable influenza vaccine distribution in developing countries during the pandemic. The proposed model utilizes an…

Inferring the economic standard of living and health from cohort height: Evidence from modern populations in developing countries.

Average adult height is a physical measure of the biological standard of living of a population. While the biological and economic standards of living of a population are very different concepts, they are linked and may empirically move together. If this is so, then cohort heights can also be used to make inferences about the economic standard of living and health of a population when other data are not available. We investigate how informative this approach is in terms of inferring income, nutrition, and mortality using data on heights from developing countries over the last 50 years for fema…

A win-win solution?: A critical analysis of tiered pricing to improve access to medicines in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Tiered pricing - the concept of selling drugs and vaccines in developing countries at prices systematically lower than in industrialized countries - has received widespread support from industry, policymakers, civil society, and academics as a way to improve access to medicines for the poor. We carried out case studies based on a review of international drug price developments for antiretrovirals, artemisinin combination therapies, drug-resistant tuberculosis medicines, liposomal amphotericin B (for visceral leishmaniasis), and pneumococcal vaccines. DISCUSSION: We found several c…
