BACKGROUND: Although procaterol is used clinically as a beta(2)-adrenergic receptor agonist to relax airway smooth muscle, it has not yet been clarified whether procaterol has inotropic effects on respiratory muscles.
METHODS: Three intervention groups were investigated: a procaterol inhalation only group; a procaterol inhalation plus endotoxin injection group (in vivo); and a procaterol incubation group (in vitro). A two-month-old girl was operated for a left-sided eventration of the diaphragm. At surgery, a mass representing an extralobar pulmonary sequestration (EPS) was found inferior to the left lobe of the lung and was excised. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen showed presence of a type II congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) within it. A review of the relevant literature is presented.

A 75-year-old man who had an emergency laparotomy for small bowel obstruction was found at operation to have multiple mid-ileal strictures. Histology of the resected specimen confirmed diaphragm disease of the bowel. The pathogenesis of this disease remains unclear but it is associated with long-term use of NSAID.
