BACKGROUND: Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), such as hair pulling, skin picking, and nail biting, are repetitive, destructive, and nonfunctional habits that cause significant distress. Separate BFRBs form a cohesive group and could be assessed as part of the Tourette/tic spectrum or obsessive-compulsive spectrum of disorders. The treatment of choice is either antidepressant or behavioral treatment, both of which have shown effectiveness. The cognitive psychophysiological (CoPs) model focuses on the tension and emotional build up that triggers habits by addressing cognitive-behavioral

INTRODUCTION: Lisdexanfetamine (LDX) is the drug for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) undergoing the largest research volume in the latest years. However, no studies certify its usefulness for the improvement of cognitive functioning in ADHD.
AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of LDX in the behavioral and cognitive improvement of a group of patients with ADHD. Such efficacy was measured by means of the administration of AULA Nesplora virtual reality test before the prescription of pharmacological treatment and right after the treatment with LDX.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The sample com

BACKGROUND: Punding (the display of stereotyped, repetitive behaviors) is a relatively recently discovered feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). Little is known about the prevalence and clinical characteristics of punding in PD.
METHODS: In this review, four large scientific databases were comprehensively searched for literature in relation to punding prevalence and clinical correlates in the context of PD.
RESULTS: Prevalence was found to vary greatly (between 0.34 to 14%), although there were large disparities in study populations, assessment methods, and criteria. We observed an associatio

BACKGROUND: Compulsive buyers feel a continual urge to buy things, irrespective of their financial means. Interest in compulsive buying has increased in the last 30 to 40 years. Since excessive buying is a regularly occurring feature of various illnesses encountered in clinical practice, one wonders whether it should be regarded as a sign of the times, as a symptom of a psychiatric illness or as a distinct psychiatric syndrome.
AIM: To gain insight into the concept of compulsive buying.
METHOD: We searched the literature via Medline, PubMed and PsycInfo for the period from 1966 to August 200

Thirty-four college students suffering from pathological skin picking were randomly assigned to a four-session cognitive-behavioural treatment (n=17) or a waiting-list condition (n=17). Severity of skin picking, psycho-social impact of skin picking, strength of skin-picking-related dysfunctional cognitions, and severity of skin injury were measured at pre-, post-, and two-months follow-up assessment. Participants in the treatment condition showed a significantly larger reduction on all measured variables in comparison to the waiting-list condition. The obtained effect sizes for the outcome mea

A person's impulsive actions are characterized by a lack of sufficient planning or an assessment of possibly harmful consequences. An impulse control disorder can be diagnosed if such actions occur frequently, even in low-stress situations. In psychiatry there are a number of syndromes that are associated with an impulse control disorder. Neurobiological findings point to a reduced turnover of serotonin in the brain of persons with an impulse control disorder and aggressive behaviour. However, a reduced turnover of serotonin is also found in persons who can consume immoderate amounts of alcoho

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is prominent in bipolar disorder, but there is little quantitative information relating it to phase of illness.
METHODS: We measured impulsivity in patients with bipolar disorder who had not met episode criteria for at least 6 months, patients who were manic, and healthy control subjects. Impulsivity was measured using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) and performance on the computerized Immediate Memory-Remote Memory Task (IMT-DMT), based on the Continuous Performance Test, which has been shown to reflect risk of impulsivity in other populations.
RESULTS: BIS sco

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder whose three main symptoms are impulsiveness, inattention, and hyperactivity. Although ADHD is an early developmental disorder, it may persist into adulthood, resulting in deficits associated with poor academic performance, frequent job changes, poor and unstable marriages, and increases in motor vehicle accidents. Of the three primary symptoms of ADHD, deficits in impulse control are the most challenging to the social network and the judicial system. While the etiology of ADHD remains unknown, recent work suggests t

There are few effective treatments of antisocial personality disorder (APD). Preliminary work suggests that the atypical antipsychotic quetiapine can decrease irritability, impulsivity, and aggressiveness. Data were collected from 4 patients with APD who were referred to a maximum-security inpatient psychiatric facility for pretrial evaluation and were treated with quetiapine. Quetiapine was effective in these patients as was indicated by a decrease in symptoms such as impulsivity, hostility, aggressiveness, irritability, and rage reactions. Typical dosage was 600 to 800 mg per day. Patients a

Compulsive buying is defined as repetitive impulsive and excessive buying leading to personal and familial distress. This study compares the buying behavior of depressed patients presenting with or without compulsive buying. The weight of promotional factors such as sales and advertising campaigns was systematically assessed. The impulsive nature of compulsive buying and the choice of items purchased were also investigated. For this purpose, we studied buying behavior among 52 inpatients diagnosed for major depressive episode with DSM-IV criteria. None of the patients presented mania or hypoma

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal studies of children with disruptive disorders (DDs) have shown high rates of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and substance use in adulthood, but few have examined the contribution of parental disorders. We examine child-/adulthood outcomes of DDs in offspring, whose biological parents did not have a history of ASPD, bipolar disorder, or substance use disorders.
METHOD: Offspring (N = 267) of parents with or without major depression (MDD), but no ASPD or bipolar disorders were followed longitudinally over 33 years, and associations between DDs and psychiatric an

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are most often associated with dopamine agonists and pulsatile dopamine replacement therapy such as oral levodopa and subcutaneous apomorphine. Intestinal levodopa-carbidopa gel may improve ICDs through rationalization of dopaminergic agents and/or a reduction of pulsatile dopaminergic stimulation, however the impact of subcutaneous foslevodopa/foscarbidopa (CSFLI) has not been reported to date.
CASES: We describe five men aged 50-68 with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) and pre-existing ICDs who were switched to CSFLI. Four of them were transitio

Impulse control disorder (ICD) is a complex, and often debilitating, symptom of Parkinson Disease (PD). The frontal lobes have been associated with complex decision making and are implicated as part of the impulse control pathway. We predicted patients with PD (PwPD)with ICD would have atrophy in frontal lobe regions compared to patients with nonICD. We aimed to identify the presence of frontal lobe alterations in PwPD based on ICD behavior using structural neuroimaging methodology. This study expands the current literature regarding cortical anatomy in patients with PDICD and focuses on futur

BACKGROUND: The role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in human aggressive behavior is poorly characterized, though some studies report that, unlike depression, circulating or salivary levels of cortisol are low compared with controls.
METHODS: In this study, we collected three salivary cortisol levels (two in the morning and one in the evening) on three separate days in 78 adult study participants with (n = 28) and without (n = 52) prominent histories of impulsive aggressive behavior. Plasma C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) were also collected in most study pa

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between a Parkinson's disease (PD) polygenic risk score (PRS) and impulse control disorders (ICDs) in PD.
BACKGROUND: Genome wide association studies (GWAS) have brought forth a PRS associated with increased risk of PD and younger disease onset. ICDs are frequent adverse effects of dopaminergic drugs and are also more frequent in patients with younger disease onset. It is unknown whether ICDs and PD share genetic susceptibility.
METHODS: We used data from a multicenter longitudinal cohort of PD patients with annual visits up to 6 years (DIG-PD). At each

OBJECTIVES: Impulse control disorder (ICD) is a common adverse effect in patients with Parkinson disease who receive dopamine agonists; however, other factors are involved in its manifestations. To study the frequency and factors involved in the development of this adverse effect in a Latin American population, we conducted a cross-sectional multicenter study.
METHODS: Two hundred fifty-five patients in 3 Latin American centers were evaluated by examination and application of scales (Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Dise

OBJECTIVE: While individual trials suggest benefit of interventions for excoriation (skin-picking) disorder (ExD), limited systematic evaluation of treatments, or their collective benefit, exists.
METHODS: The present study examined the current state of treatments for ExD in a systematic review and meta-analysis and explored potential treatment moderators. Twelve trials were identified for review, including five with a control condition. Of these, nine were eligible to be included in the meta-analysis (three with a control).
RESULTS: A fixed-effects meta-analysis found a large overall treatm

BACKGROUND: Intermittent explosive disease (IED) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by intermittent attacks of rage and violence frequently resistant to pharmacological therapy. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the posteromedial hypothalamus has been applied with fair results and clinical improvement with some surgical morbidity due to neurovegetative side effects. The anterior limb of the internal capsule/ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS) has never been used alone as a target for this disease.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of bilateral DBS of the VC
