A role for airborne particulates in high mercury levels of some cetaceans.

In a study of 25 Tursiops truncatus and two Globicephala macrorhynchus examined by necropsy, abundant HgSe was found in both the liver and in the respiratory system (lung and hilar lymph nodes). In the liver HgSe was consistently associated with the cell-breakdown pigment lipofuscin, whereas in lung and hilar lymph nodes it was consistently associated with particulates consisting of partially graphitic soot and silicates. This supports earlier suggestions that in the liver HgSe may be a storage end product of Hg metabolism, while adding the new suggestion that in the respiratory system HgSe ma

Development and evaluation of a core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) scheme for Brucella spp.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Brucella spp. Brucella spp. can be sub-typed by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) method, which … such as B. ceti and B. pinnipedialis were closely related. Of these, B. ceti strains isolated from dolphins and porpoise were differentiated into two groups. We incorporated our cgMLST tool in BrucellaBase (http://www.dbtbrucellosis.in/brucella_cgmlst.html), which will be helpful to predict the cgMLST allelic profile and the ST of a newly sequenced genome …

Blowing bubbles: an aquatic adaptation that risks protection of the respiratory tract in humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae).

Cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) have developed extensive protective barriers to exclude water or food from the respiratory tract, including valvular nostrils, an intranarial elongated larynx, and a sphincteric soft palate. A barrier breach can be lethal, as asphyxiation may occur from incursions of water (drowning) or food (choking). Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), however, exhibit a possibly unique and paradoxical behavior concerning respiratory protection: they release a "bubble cloud" (a cluster of tiny bubbles) underwater from the mouth. How they do this remains uncle…

Parallel Erosion of a Testis-Specific Na+/K+ ATPase in Three Mammalian Lineages Sheds Light into the Evolution of Spermatozoa Energetics.

Understanding how extant physiological landscapes arise from novel genetic interactions is key to elucidating phenotypic evolution. Sperm cells exemplify a striking case of functional compartmentalization shaped by molecular adjustments, notably regarding energy metabolism. Here, we examine the impact of gene duplication and loss on the evolution of sperm energetics in mammals. Our findings reveal that the acquisition of an exclusive mechanism controlling the sperm plasma membrane Na+ gradient, critical for glucose uptake, emerged in the ancestor of mammals through gene duplication, which orig

Evaluation of the Upper Airway in Class II Patients Undergoing Maxillary Setback and Counterclockwise Rotation in Orthognatic Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Maxillary setback in orthognathic surgery has been extensively discussed regarding its effects on bone healing and facial soft tissue profile; however, its impact on upper airway volume remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: We evaluate the influence of maxillary setback combined with counterclockwise (CCW) rotation of the occlusal plane on upper airway dimensions. METHODS: A retrospective observational case series was conducted with eight patients diagnosed with Class II malocclusion who underwent orthognathic surgery involving maxillary setback and CCW mandibular rotation. All procedure

Modeling Skin Mark Temporal Variations to Estimate the Sex of Delphinids with Low Sexual Dimorphism: Implications for Management and Conservation.

Sex ratio is an important population metric in animal conservation, but its study in marine species with low sexual dimorphism is often challenging. This work aimed to apply the principles of skin mark analysis to a cetacean species to test its ability to identify sex differences in markings and build a sex-discrimination model exclusively based on photographic material. The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was chosen as the model species, and skin marks and their progression over time were identified and measured across the whole-body surface of individuals on photographs acquir

Treatment outcomes of 3D-printed custom and conventional mini-implant assisted rapid palatal expanders (MARPE).

BACKGROUND: Maxillary expansion has been a treatment of choice for correcting transverse skeletal discrepancies, especially in growing patients. For older patients, Mini-implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (MARPE) offers a promising treatment option. This study evaluates the treatment outcomes of Custom 3D-printed MARPE compared to Conventional MARPE (MSE-II). METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed CBCT images from 42 patients aged 16 to 35 years, comparing measurements before (T1) and after (T2) expansion. The conventional (n = 21) and custom (n = 21) MARPE groups were matched with

Fur Seals Suppress REM Sleep for Very Long Periods without Subsequent Rebound.

Virtually all land mammals and birds have two sleep states: slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep [1, 2]. After deprivation of REM sleep by repeated awakenings, mammals increase REM sleep time [3], supporting the idea that REM sleep is homeostatically regulated. Some evidence suggests that periods of REM sleep deprivation for a week or more cause physiological dysfunction and eventual death [4, 5]. However, separating the effects of REM sleep loss from the stress of repeated awakening is difficult [2, 6]. The northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) is a semiaquatic mammal [7

Comparative transcriptomic analysis of the thymus and other immune-related tissues using post-mortem samples from stranded cetaceans in South Korea.

Cetaceans are mammals that have adapted to aquatic environments, but their immunological characteristics are not well understood. In this study, we performed comparative transcriptomic analyses of major immune-related tissues (thymus, spleen, liver, and kidney) from post-mortem samples of stranded cetaceans in Korea, including the finless porpoise, fetal minke whale and Risso's dolphin. For cross-taxa comparisons, we retrieved publicly available transcriptomic datasets from terrestrial mammals (human and mouse), teleosts (zebrafish, common carp, and turbot), birds (chicken), reptiles (green se
