Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global challenge that compromises the effectiveness of disease control and increases risks for both human and animal health. Aquaculture systems are particularly vulnerable, as extensive and often inappropriate antimicrobial use has driven the emergence and persistence of multidrug-resistant bacteria. This mini-review summarizes the ecological and genetic mechanisms underlying AMR in aquaculture, with emphasis on plasmid-mediated resistance and its role in horizontal gene transfer. It also addresses the broader environmental and public health implica

House flies (Musca domestica L.) are filth-breeding pests of urban and rural environments around the world. Frequenting microbe-rich substrates for nutritional and reproductive needs, house flies pose a risk to human and animal health through their carriage and transmission of pathogenic and antimicrobial resistant bacteria (AMR). Adult house flies were collected from Kansas beef and dairy cattle operations to assess factors influencing bacterial abundance and AMR incidence flies. Aerobic culturable bacteria and suspected coliforms (SC) were enumerated from fly homogenate cultured on nonselect

Antibiotics play an essential role in combating infectious diseases. Due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria, the efficacy of antibiotic therapy is continually decreasing. Consequently, there is an urgent need for the development of novel antibiotics, preferably with novel targets that have not yet been clinically exploited and/or multiple mechanisms of action, reducing the probability of fast resistance development. Recently, several new promising antibacterial targets have been identified, including N-acetylglucosamine-6-phosphate deacetylase, glucosamine-6-phosphate synthase, m

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health challenge requiring cross-sector action, with research largely focused on chickens, leaving ducks underexplored. This study examines AMR dynamics in Ross 308 broilers and Cherry Valley ducks over 15 months and 15 stocking periods under consistent rearing conditions. A total of 96 pooled samples were collected: 50 from broiler farms (26 biological, 24 environmental) and 46 from duck farms (24 biological, 22 environmental). Using next-generation shotgun sequencing, 3,665 distinct AMR types were identified: 1,918 in broilers and 1,747 in ducks. Ho

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a ubiquitous Gram-negative pathogen in clinical settings, responsible for pulmonary infections, urinary tract infections, septicemia, and other severe diseases.Over recent years, widespread use of aminoglycosides, quinolones, and β-lactams has driven a marked increase in antimicrobial resistance, compromising treatment efficacy. Here, we review the molecular bases of K. pneumoniae drug resistance, focusing on β-lactamase production, efflux-pump overexpression, target-site modifications, and reduced membrane permeability. We also examine the horizontal spread of resista

Helicobacter pylori infection remains globally prevalent and is a major cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric cancer (GC). The Asia-Pacific region has the highest global burden of infection and GC mortality; however, the effectiveness of eradication therapy is increasingly being compromised by antibiotic resistance. Between 1990 and 2022, resistance to clarithromycin (CAM), metronidazole (MNZ), and levofloxacin (LVX) increased markedly from 7%, 37%, and 9% to 30%, 61%, and 35%, respectively, whereas resistance to amoxicillin and tetracycline remained low at approximatel

The emergence and increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is now widely recognized as a major public health challenge. Traditional antimicrobial drugs are becoming increasingly ineffective, while the development of new antibiotics is waning. As a result, alternative treatments for infections are garnering increased interest. Among these alternatives, bacteriophages, also known as phages, are gaining renewed attention and are reported to offer a promising solution to alleviate the burden of bacterial infections. This review discusses the current successes of phage therapy (PT) against multid

The limited number of available antifungal drugs and the increasing number of fungal isolates that show drug or multidrug resistance pose a serious medical threat. Several yeast pathogens, such as Nakaseomyces glabratus (Candida glabrata), show a remarkable ability to develop drug resistance during treatment through the acquisition of genetic mutations. However, how stable this resistance and the underlying mutations are in non-selective conditions remains poorly characterized. The stability of acquired drug resistance has fundamental implications for our understanding of the appearance and sp

Testing hospital wastewater (HWW) is potentially an effective, long-term approach for monitoring trends in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns in health care institutions. Over a year, we collected wastewater samples from the clinical and non-clinical sites of a tertiary hospital and from a downstream wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). We focused on the extent of carbapenem resistance among Enterobacteriaceae isolates given their clinical importance. Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. were the most frequently isolated Enterobacteriaceae species at all sampling sites. Additionally, a smal

BACKGROUND: Expansion of antimicrobial resistance monitoring and epidemiological surveillance are key components of the WHO strategy towards zero leprosy. The inability to grow Mycobacterium leprae in vitro precludes routine phenotypic drug susceptibility testing, and only limited molecular tests are available. We evaluated a culture-free targeted deep sequencing assay, for mycobacterial identification, genotyping based on 18 canonical SNPs and 11 core variable-number tandem-repeat (VNTR) markers, and detection of rifampicin, dapsone and fluoroquinolone resistance-associated mutations in rpoB/

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are an emerging health problem. Kidney patients with UTI are at increased risk of antimicrobials resistance (AMR) and bad prognosis. In the nephrological setting, optimizing the management of UTIs is certainly a challenge, but it is indispensable for a favorable clinical outcome and in fighting AMR. When UTIs caused by multidrug-resistant germs are suspected, it is necessary to initiate empirical antibiotic therapy timely, pending microbiological study and bacterial sensitivity. The empirical choice of antibiotic must be based on: guidelines, resistance rates re

Bacteria within the genus Acinetobacter (principally A. baumannii-calcoaceticus complex [ABC]) are gram-negative coccobacilli that most often cause infections in nosocomial settings. Community-acquired infections are rare, but may occur in patients with comorbidities, advanced age, diabetes mellitus, chronic lung or renal disease, malignancy, or impaired immunity. Most common sites of infections include blood stream, skin/soft-tissue/surgical wounds, ventilator-associated pneumonia, orthopaedic or neurosurgical procedures, and urinary tract. Acinetobacter species are intrinsically resistant to

BACKGROUND: Hospital acquired infections pose a significant risk for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Horizontal transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes contributes to prevalence of multidrug-resistant infections in this patient population.
METHODS: At an academic bone marrow transplantation center, we performed whole genome DNA sequencing (WGS) on commonly used physician items, including badges, stethoscopes, soles of shoes, and smart phones from 6 physicians. Data were analyzed to determine antimicrobial resistance and virulence factor genes.
RESULTS: A total

Antimicrobial resistance is presently one of the most public health critical concerns. The frequent and often incorrect use of antibiotics in animal husbandry has led to the spread of antimicrobial resistance in this setting. Wastewater from slaughterhouses can be contaminated with multidrug-resistant bacteria, representing a possible cross-contamination route. We evaluated the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in wastewater samples from slaughterhouses located in an Italian region. Specifically, 18 slaughterhouses were included in the study. Of the tested samples, 40 bacterial strains

Tuberculosis is the ninth-leading cause of death worldwide. Treatment success is approximately 80% for susceptible strains and decreases to 30% for extensively resistant strains. Shortening the therapy duration for Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a major goal, which can be attained with the use of combination therapy. However, the identification of the most promising combination is a challenge given the quantity of older and newer agents available. Our objective was to identify promising 2-drug combinations using an in vitro strategy to ultimately be tested in an in vitro hollow fiber infection

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Combination therapy is a common strategy for treatment of multidrug resistant infections. Despite the strong twin rationales of improving efficacy and reducing resistance development, the evidence supporting this strategy remains controversial. The aims of this review are to assess the most recent studies supporting the use of combination therapy for treating infections because of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and to highlight relevant areas for further research.
RECENT FINDINGS: Evidence supporting the use of combination therapy for the treatment of CRE rem

PURPOSE: The global rise of multidrug resistant organisms (MDROs) is of major concern since infections by these pathogens are difficult, and in some cases, even impossible to treat. This review will discuss the effectiveness of a pathogen-independent alternative approach consisting of the implementation of antibiotic stewardship (ABS) programs, improvement of hand hygiene compliance, and daily antiseptic body washings instead of "screening, isolation and eradication" as recommended by many infection control guidelines today.
METHODS: A review of the literature.
RESULTS: The classical approac

BACKGROUND: Clostridium difficile are gram-positive, spore forming anaerobic bacteria that are the leading cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea, usually associated with antibiotic usage. Metronidazole is currently the first-line treatment for mild to moderate C. difficile diarrhea however recurrence occurs at rates of 15-35%. There are few reports of C. difficile metronidazole resistance in the literature, and when observed, the phenotype has been transient and lost after storage or exposure of the bacteria to freeze/thaw cycles. Owing to the unstable nature of the resistance phenotype in t
