Factors associated with asthma attack recurrence in Ecuadorian children: longitudinal study of potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic caused a major disruption in access to and use of health resources and facilities. There are limited longitudinal data from low-resource settings on the impact of pandemic mitigation strategies and medication use on asthma attacks in children. METHODS: We did a longitudinal study of risk factors for asthma attack recurrence among children aged 5-17 years presenting with an attack to emergency rooms in public hospitals in Ecuador. Children were followed for at least 12 months by monthly telemonitoring. Cox regression models for multiple recurrences were used t…

Sit-to-Stand Power Across Adulthood in Three Latin American Countries: Sex-Specific Relative and Allometric Reference Values From a Multicenter Study.

Sit-to-stand (STS) power is a practical field-based indicator of lower-limb muscle power and functional performance across adulthood, yet reference values have been derived mainly from European cohorts, and allometric STS power remains scarcely described in Latin America. This multicenter cross-sectional study developed sex- and age-specific descriptive reference benchmarks for relative and allometric STS power in adults from Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador, and examined age- and country-related variation. A total of 1254 healthy adults aged 18-80 years performed a standardized five-repetition ST…

Snake venom antibodies in Ecuadorian Indians.

Serum samples from 223 Waorani Indians, a tribe in eastern Ecuador, were investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for antibodies to snake venom. Seventy-eight per cent were positive, confirming the highest incidence and mortality from snake bite poisoning yet recorded in the world. Most samples were positive for more than one venom antibody. Antibodies were found to venoms of Bothrops viper in 60% of positive cases, of Micrurus coral snake in 21%, and of the bushmaster, Lachesis muta, in 18%. Further studies are needed to determine whether high venom-antibody levels afford protection …

Navigating Practical, Political, and Ethical Challenges of Long-Term Human Biology Field Research: The Shuar Health and Life History Project.

Major advances in understanding human biology and health have been made possible by long-term field research projects with Indigenous peoples, whose ecological settings and lifeways are distinct from majority populations in high-income settings. Long-term fieldwork is central to human biology, yet much about this research approach remains opaque. This paper considers a single long-term study-the Shuar Health and Life History Project in Amazonian Ecuador-and discusses how we have navigated practical, political, and ethical challenges of initiating and maintaining a two-decade long collaborative…

Financial distress/well-being and living situation in Ecuadorian health workers.

The tendency to live alone is a relatively recent phenomenon in Ecuador, but it is expanding rapidly. This study aims to identify factors associated with financial distress/well-being according to living situation (living alone vs. living with a partner) in Ecuadorian health workers. This study examined the construct of financial distress/well-being in a sample of 800 Ecuadorian health workers using cross-sectional data. Living situation was compared using generalized linear model analyses including income, age, children living at home, self-perception of health, depression, anxiety and stress…

Insights from new cestodes of the crocodile shark, Pseudocarcharias kamoharai (Lamniformes: Pseudocarchariidae), prompt expansion of Scyphyophyllidum and formal synonymization of seven phyllobothriidean genera - at last!

Three new cestode species are described from the crocodile shark (Pseudocarcharias kamoharai) in Ecuador. All three were examined with light and scanning electron microscopy. The unique combination of morphological features in one of the new species prompted formal investigation of the non-monophyly of Paraorygmatobothrium relative to the morphologically similar genera Doliobothrium, Guidus, Marsupiobothrium, Nandocestus, Orectolobicestus, Ruhnkecestus and Scyphophyllidium. Sequence data generated for part of the 28S rDNA gene were subjected to maximum likelihood (ML) analysis. The resulting t…

Carrion's disease: an eradicable illness?

Carrion's disease is a neglected tropical disease caused by Bartonella bacilliformis, a vector-borne pathogen restricted to the Andean valleys of Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. Carrion's disease is a biphasic illness; in the acute phase the case-fatality rate can be as high as 88 %, related to high parasitemia, arriving to almost all erythrocytes, and secondary bacterial infections close related with the development of transient immunosuppression in the earlier illness phases. In addition, there are an undefined number of asymptomatic carriers that are reservoirs of the etiological agent of Carri…

Interactions between the Avian Parasite, Philornis downsi (Diptera: Muscidae) and the Galapagos Flycatcher, Myiarchus magnirostris Gould (Passeriformes: Tyrannidae).

An incidental observation of the fly Philornis downsi parasitizing a Galapagos Flycatcher (Myiarchus magnirostris) nest has revealed new insights into the searching behavior and biology of this invasive fly parasite and its interactions with endemic landbirds in the Galapagos Islands. Observations suggest that P. downsi relies on olfactory cues, or olfactory cues combined with the activity of adult birds, to locate nests and that flies continue to visit nests when chicks are >3 d old. At least 200 eggs were laid by P. downsi in different parts of the nest and >40 early-instar larvae were found

Demographic consequences of chromatic leaf defence in tropical tree communities: do red young leaves increase growth and survival?

BACKGROUND: Many tropical forest tree species delay greening their leaves until full expansion. This strategy is thought to provide newly fl … ure trees in two diverse tropical forests: a rain forest in western Amazonia (Yasuní National Park, Ecuador) and a deciduous forest in Central America (Barro Colorado Island, Panamá). A test was made of whether individuals and species with delayed greening or red-coloured young leaves showed lower mortality or higher relative growth rates than species tha …

Hair mercury levels in Amazonian populations: spatial distribution and trends.

BACKGROUND: Mercury is present in the Amazonian aquatic environments from both natural and anthropogenic sources. As a consequence, many riverside populations are exposed to methylmercury, a highly toxic organic form of mercury, because of their intense fish consumption. Many studies have analysed this exposure from different approaches since the early nineties. This review aims to systematize the information in spatial distribution, comparing hair mercury levels by studied population and Amazonian river basin, looking for exposure trends. METHODS: The reviewed papers were selected from scien

First Molecular Insights into the Presence of Canine Kobuvirus in Ecuadorian Dogs Through the Standardization of a Sensitive SYBR Green RT-qPCR Assay.

Canine Kobuvirus (CaKoV) has been identified as an agent involved in gastrointestinal diseases among dogs worldwide, with a particular impact on young individuals. This study reports the first molecular detection of CaKoV in Ecuadorian dogs with gastroenteritis, using a sensitive SYBR Green-based RT-qPCR assay. The assay demonstrated high sensitivity, with detection limits approaching a single copy of genetic material (1 copy/μL), with a standard efficiency curve of 100.6% and a correlation coefficient of 0.997, facilitating accurate CaKoV detection even at a minimal number of gene copies; it …
