The terrible triad of the elbow is a difficult injury with historically poor outcomes. Improved experience, techniques, and implants have advanced to the point where restoration of elbow stability can be expected. Careful attention to each destabilizing element of the injury pattern is essential and places high demands on the surgeon's mastery of the anatomic complexity of the elbow. Technically, the surgeon must bring every skill to bear, as soft tissue techniques, fracture repair, and joint arthroplasty are routinely required to adequately treat these complex constellations of injury.

Crutches can be used by patients with injuries to the lower extremities in order to perform 'swing-through' gait. Because axillary crutches have been associated with axillary artery thrombosis and crutch palsy, they have to a large extent been superseded by elbow crutches. Canadian crutches combine many of the features of axillary and elbow crutches, and a study of the three types suggests that they have advantages in terms of energy cost.

Untreated traumatic posterior dislocation of the elbow joint, 3 weeks or older, is defined as "neglected posterior dislocation of the elbow". Around 90% of these are of posterolateral type. These are much more common in the developing and underdeveloped countries. Patients presents with a deformed, stiff and painful elbow with difficulty to perform activities of daily living. The clinical picture looks quite similar to malunited supracondylar fracture of the elbow. Diagnosis is usually confirmed radiographically. CT and MRI scan give additional information and are recommended before embarking

Distal humerus fractures, which are challenging injuries seen in geriatric patients, are often repaired using open reduction and internal fixation or total elbow arthroplasty. This updated meta-analysis, which includes more recent open reduction and internal fixation techniques, examined outcomes following distal humerus fractures repaired using open reduction and internal fixation vs total elbow arthroplasty. Although distal humerus fractures treated with total elbow arthroplasty achieved statistically higher functional scores relative to those treated with open reduction and internal fixatio

Functional electrical stimulation of the triceps is a method of restoring elbow extension to individuals with paralyzed triceps. Eleven arms of individuals with cervical-level spinal cord injuries (SCIs) received a triceps electrode as an addition to a hand-grasp neuroprosthesis. Stimulation was controlled either as part of a preprogrammed pattern or via a switch or an accelerometer that was connected to the neuroprosthesis external controller. The outcome measures were (1) elbow extension moments at different elbow positions, (2) performance in controllable workspace experiments, and (3) comp

BACKGROUND: Additional fractures occur in association with proximal radius fractures, but the extent of these secondary injuries has not been systematically assessed.
OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the frequency and nature of additional fractures associated with proximal radius injuries in a large pediatric cohort.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Radiographs meeting search criteria for proximal radius fracture during a 5-year period were reviewed. Fracture characteristics and the coexistence of additional elbow fractures were recorded and analyzed. The retrospective review was compared with initial interpre

BACKGROUND: Radial head replacement is indicated to treat complex proximal radial fractures that are not amenable to internal fixation.
HYPOTHESIS: Implantation of a bipolar radial head prosthesis after radial head excision ensures stability of the elbow and forearm, thereby promoting ligament healing and restoring elbow function.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-two patients managed with implantation of a bipolar radial head prosthesis (Guepar(®)) were evaluated after a mean follow-up of 50 months. The procedure was performed in the acute setting in 16 patients, including 13 with associated inj

Coronoid fractures are less frequent injuries seen in around one-tenth of patients with elbow dislocation. Any injury to the coronoid process can be associated with elbow instability, in which injury to collateral ligaments co-exists, resulting in a loss of congruency of the elbow joint. However, there is a scarcity of evidence regarding patients' management with elbow dislocation and associated coronoid fractures. So, our aim is to assess the functional outcome of the elbow after operative fixation in patients with any type of coronoid fracture with associated elbow dislocation. A total of si

The management of baseball elbow injuries, both operative and nonoperative, was usually successful, permitting continued high-level athletic participation. Surgery was particularly effective in those cases with loose bodies. In the shoulder, symptoms occurred in the anterior and posterior regions. Each area presented difficulties in accurate diagnosis. The management of anterior symptoms was primarily nonoperative, surgery being reserved as a salvage procedure. In the posterior capsular syndrome, the source of pain is still unclear.

Somatic and craniofacial injuries from the use of electric scooters (e-scooters) have become a serious public health concern, affecting both riders and pedestrians. Accidents involving e-scooters pose a risk for bone fracutres and significant injuries to the soft tissues and brain, and severe injuries may result in death. Oral healthcare providers should particularly be aware of the potential for injuries to the oral hard and soft tissues. Dentists have the opportunity to educate their patients on preventive measures to mitigate e-scooter injuries and to advocate the use of protective equipmen

69 patients with kickboard injuries were treated over a 5-month period. 6 patients were admitted to hospital. Fractures (48%), contusions/ lacerations (45%) and capsular/ ligamentuous injuries (27%) were the most prevalent types of injury. Injuries of the elbow, forearm, wrist and hand accounted for 54% of all cases. Ankle (23%), head (6%) and knee were other regions frequently involved. It is concluded that kickboard-driving imposes a severe risk of injuries. The typical kickboard injuries was the fracture of the wrist and the ankle sprain. Protective equipment for the injured regions is very

BACKGROUND: The terrible triad injury involves an ulnohumeral dislocation, radial head fracture, and coronoid process fracture. According to traditional teaching, these injuries are strongly associated with anterolateral coronoid tip fractures and can be addressed via a lateral approach to the elbow. However, recent small clinical series suggest that some terrible triad injuries have larger coronoid fractures involving the anteromedial facet. It is important to understand how often these larger coronoid fractures occur because anteromedial facet fractures may need a different approach and diff

Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears can occur from trauma or chronic overuse, and the treatment depends on the type of sport the patient plays and the severity of symptoms. Overuse UCL injuries are most commonly due to micro-trauma in overhead athletes such as baseball players, softball players, and tennis players. Acute complete UCL tears in athletes due to trauma are less common but generally operative treatment is recommended. In gymnastics, elbow dislocations are more common than isolated UCL injuries, and there is sparse literature on the success of non-operative treatment of isolated U

Supracondylar humeral fractures are the most common elbow fractures in children and represent 3 % of all paediatric fractures. The most common cause is a fall onto an outstretched hand with the elbow in extension, resulting in an extension-type fracture (97-99 % of cases). Currently, the Gartland classification is used, which has treatment implications. Diagnosis is based on plain radiographs, but accurate imaging could be limited due to patient pain. Based on fracture type, the definitive treatment could be either non-operative (type I) or operative (type III/IV); however, when handling type

OBJECTIVE: Waveboarding, a type of skateboarding, is a new craze among children. The aim of this study is to describe how many children visit the emergency department as a consequence of waveboarding and the types of injury they have.
DESIGN: Retrospective, descriptive.
METHOD: All records of children aged 5 to 15 years who had visited the emergency department of the Medical Center Alkmaar in the period March to May 2010 were examined. If a case of waveboard-related injury was found then the type of injury was noted. For all of the injuries a phone call was made to try to find out if protect

Transectional nerve injuries are uncommon in children. We report the outcome of 19 children aged < or = 13 years with acute transectional injuries to the ulnar nerves who were treated by primary epineural repair. There were 13 boys and 6 girls with a mean age at the time of injury of 6.7 years (range, 2-12 years). The site of injury was the palm in 4 children, wrist in 10, forearm in 4, and above the elbow in 1. Associated injuries to other structures occurred in 13 children. The mean recovery (Medical Research Council scale) of the first dorsal interosseous muscle was grade 4.0 (range, grade
