Membrane refractoriness and excitation induced in cardiac fibers by monophasic and biphasic shocks.

INTRODUCTION: This modeling study examines the effect of low-intensity monophasic and biphasic waveforms on the response of a refractory cardiac fiber to the defibrillation shock. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two cardiac fiber representations are considered in this study: a continuous fiber and a discrete fiber that incorporates gap junctions. Each fiber is undergoing a propagating action potential. Shocks of various strengths and coupling intervals are delivered extracellularly at fiber ends during the relative refractory period. In a continuous fiber, monophasic shock strengths of three times the d

Electrical impedance compared with other non-invasive bioengineering techniques and visual scoring for detection of irritation in human skin.

A new, non-invasive device, which enables local measurements of electrical impedance to a controlled depth, has been used to evaluate the degree of irritation in human skin. The results have been compared with those obtained using other non-invasive techniques, i.e. with transepidermal water loss (TEWL), electrical capacitance moist measurement (ECM), laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF), and visual scoring. Sodium lauryl sulphate solutions (0.1-5.0%), and a blank, were applied in Finn Chambers for 24 h on the volar forearm of 10 healthy volunteers. Values were recorded before application of the test

Response and receptive-field properties of spinomesencephalic tract cells in the cat.

Recordings were made from 90 identified spinomesencephalic tract (SMT) cells in the lumbosacral spinal cord of cats anesthetized with alpha-chloralose and pentobarbital sodium. Recording sites were located in laminae I-VIII. Antidromic stimulation sites were located in different regions of the rostral and caudal midbrain including the periaqueductal gray, midbrain reticular formation, and the deep layers of the superior colliculus. Twelve SMT cells were antidromically activated from more than one midbrain level or from sites in the medial thalamus. The mean conduction velocity for the populati

Galvanic disruption of vestibulospinal postural control by cochlear implant devices.

All subjects with implanted cochlear stimulators demonstrated evidence of abnormal postural stability without their stimulators activated. Instability increased when they were tested with cochlear stimulation units turned on, and additional instability was demonstrated in four of these subjects when tested in noise. These findings suggest that the electrical stimulation delivered by the cochlear prosthesis is not limited to the auditory system. The precise characteristics of electrical stimulation devices designed for stimulations limited to the cochlea and their spurious effects upon motor pe

Acrylamide autonomic neuropathy in the cat. Part 2. Effects on mesenteric vascular control.

Mesenteric blood flow has been studied in cats poisoned with acrylamide. In severely poisoned animals, there is impairment of the neural control of the mesenteric vascular bed. The diminished response of the mesenteric bed to tyramine administration, the increased response to phenylephrine and noradrenaline and the failure of the nerve endings to take up exogenous noradrenaline are indicative of damage to the postganglionic unmyelinated fibres. The studies support the view that disturbance of blood pressure control in autonomic neuropathy is related to the impaired vasomotor control of the spl

A conductive polymer restores connexin43 expression through the suppression of mitogen-activated protein kinases to improve intercellular communication and alleviate atrial fibrillation.

Conductive biomaterials have shown promising results for correcting pathological cardiac electrical signaling. However, their mechanisms of operation are still largely unclear. One reason behind disrupted cardiac intercellular communication, though, is lowered expression of the gap junction protein connexin43 (Cx43), which may be alleviated by conductive biomaterials. In this study, we aimed to test this hypothesis, using the self-doping conductive biomaterial poly-3-amino-4-methoxybenzoic acid-gelatin (PAMB-G). An in vitro model was established, in which cardiomyocytes (CMs) were treated with

Spiderweb-inspired electronically conductive hygroscopic adhesive for chronic bioelectronic interface.

Long-term physiological signal monitoring is critical for accurate diagnosis and effective management of chronic diseases. However, current electrode technologies face significant drawbacks: dry electrodes exhibit high electrochemical impedance and poor adhesion to skin, while wet electrodes suffer from short service lifetimes due to water loss. Inspired by the hygroscopic properties of spider webs, we developed an electronically conductive hygroscopic adhesive (termed as "hygrotrode") that continuously absorbs ambient moisture through a cross-linked, three-dimensional hygroscopic polymer netw

Programmable Polyaniline-Nanostructured Sensing Fibers via Microfluidic Spinning Chemistry and Their Wearable Monitoring Applications.

The development of flexible smart textiles urgently requires conductive fibers with high elasticity, wide strain response, and environmental stability. Conventional polyaniline (PANI)-based composite conductive fibers suffer from low production scalability, inconsistent nanostructure control, and compromised electromechanical properties, severely limiting their practical application in smart textiles. Herein, an innovative online in situ polymerization microfluidic spinning (OIPMS) strategy was proposed. This approach integrated solvent-exchange-induced phase separation for fiber solidificatio

Dynamically reconfigurable conductive hydrogels based on the spatial confinement and backbone reinforcement of bacterial cellulose: Signal recognition and human-computer interaction.

Traditional hydrogels struggle to balance mechanical toughness and signal stability due to their reliance on permanent chemical crosslinking or sacrificial bond energy dissipation. To address this issue, this work introduces a fully physically cross-linked, dynamically reconfigurable hyperelastic bacterial cellulose/tannic acid-MXene/polyacrylamide (BC/TA-MXene/PAM) dual-network conductive hydrogel. The hydrogel uses BC as a continuous skeleton, TA-MXene as a conductive filler, PAM as a flexible network, and a sodium dodecyl sulfonate/octadecyl methacrylate (SDS/C18M) hydrophobic complex as a

Binary cation enhanced, high conductive hydrogels comprised of oxidized hyaluronic acid and polyethylenimine for wearable strain sensors.

Hydrogels are widely adopted in flexible electronics, yet their mechanical and electrochemical stability under harsh conditions remains challenging. In this study, we develop a novel hyaluronic acid-based double network (DN) hydrogel featuring exceptional mechanical robustness (6.29 MJ m-3), low-temperature resistance (-50 °C), and good self-healing ability (93% self-healing efficiency). The hydrogels are synthesized through the covalent bonding of oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) via Schiff-base reaction as the primary network, with polymeric acrylic acid (PAA) formi

Monolithic all-laser fabricated 3D bioelectronic platforms with multilayer hybrid interconnects for multimodal sensing.

Soft, flexible biointerfaces are attractive tools for tracking both biophysical and biochemical signals, yet conventional two-dimensional (2D) planar electrode arrays suffer from limited functional density, and standard metallic interconnects undergo bio-corrosion and oxidation in physiological fluids. Here, we report a monolithic, all-laser manufacturing strategy for 3D-integrated, multilayered flexible biointerfaces based on a structurally doped silver-nanowire/carbon-nanotube-laser-induced-graphene (AgNW/CNT-LIG) hybrid. A biodegradable low-voltage soft actuator with exceptional energy density and ultrafast response.

Soft actuators that integrate biodegradability, responsiveness to human-safe stimuli, and high actuation performance are highly desirable for next-generation biomedical devices. However, current systems fail to realize these attributes within a single platform. Here, we propose a microfibrillated cellulose (MFC)-based soft actuator incorporating a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) network to suppress crystallinity and ionic liquid (IL) aggregation. This design enhances ionic conductivity, forms abundant ion transport channels, and reduces interfacial resistance. Operated at 1 volt, the actuator achi

Bioinspired Directional Hydrogel-Based High-Performance Flexible Sensor for Multiple Jumping Pattern Detection in Athletic Training.

Conductive hydrogels have garnered significant attention as ideal materials for flexible wearable sensors due to their conductivity, flexibility, adaptability, and biocompatibility. However, traditional conductive hydrogels frequently exhibit poor moisture retention and suboptimal mechanical properties, which greatly limit their practical usability. Inspired by the anisotropic structure of biological tissues and the natural moisturizing factors in skin, a novel bioinspired directional hydrogel (BDH) system is presented, using polyvinyl alcohol as the matrix, incorporating polydopamine-modified

Modified carboxylate cellulose nanofibers/graphene composite as triboelectric and conducting electrode in single electrode triboelectric nanogenerator with superior acid/alkali resistance.

Single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (SE-TENG) is essentially useful when only one triboelectric electrode can connect to external load. Conventional metal electrodes are susceptible to corrosion in open environments characterized by high humidity and acidic or alkaline conditions. Thus, the material used for the triboelectric layer must exhibit robust resistance to environmental acids and alkalis. To achieve this target, advancements have been made to wrap up metal electrodes or substitute it with non-metallic conductive materials. However, the non-metallic conductive materials have n

Self-healing and transparent ionic conductive PVA/pullulan/borax hydrogels with multi-sensing capabilities for wearable sensors.

Conductive hydrogels as wearable sensors have been used for numerous applications in human motion detection, personal healthcare monitoring and other diverse scenarios. However, it remains a challenge to integrate self-healing ability, multiple sensing capabilities, and transparency in one single unit. In this work, multifunctional polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/Pullulan/Borax conductive hydrogels were fabricated by introducing borate ester bonds and hydrogen bonds. The described hydrogels showed fast self-healing properties, which could autonomously completely recover within 15 s. The hydrogels poss

Antifreeze proteins and surface-modified cellulose nanocrystals for designing anti-freezing conductive hydrogel sensors.

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) are a type of protein capable of inhibiting ice crystal growth, lowering the freezing point, and protecting organisms from cold-induced damage. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are chemically modified to enhance the hydrogel's performance. The synergistic effect with AFPs further regulates its mechanical properties, antifreeze performance, and high sensing sensitivity. First, based on the principles of mussel-inspired chemistry, dopamine (DA) was introduced to increase adhesion and chemical crosslinking points, successfully modifying zwitterionic proline

Fast gelling, high performance MXene hydrogels for wearable sensors.

Hydrogel-based functional materials had attracted great attention in the fields of artificial intelligence, soft robotics, and motion monitoring. However, the gelation of hydrogels induced by free radical polymerization typically required heating, light exposure, and other conditions, limiting their practical applications and development in real-life scenarios. In this study, a simple and direct method was proposed to achieve rapid gelation at room temperature by incorporating reductive MXene sheets in conjunction with metal ions into the chitosan network and inducing the formation of a polyac

Reconceptualizing Acute Pain Management in the 21st Century.

Acute pain can have many etiologies that include surgical procedures, trauma (motor vehicle accident), musculoskeletal injuries (rib fracture) and, burns among others. Valuable components of a multimodal approach to acute pain management include both opioid and non-opioid medications, procedure specific regional anesthesia techniques (peripheral nerve blocks and neuraxial approaches), and interventional approaches (eg, peripheral nerve stimulation and cryo-neurolysis). Overall, successful acute perioperative pain management requires a multimodal, multidisciplinary approach that involves a coor

CFTR Modulates Hypothalamic Neuron Excitability to Maintain Female Cycle.

Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), known as an epithelial Cl- channel, is increasingly noted to be expressed in the nervous system, although whether and how it plays a role in neuronal excitability is unclear. Given the association of CFTR with fertility, we tested here possible involvement of CFTR in regulating hypothalamic neuron excitability. Patch-clamp and Ca2+ imaging showed that pharmacological inhibition of CFTR evoked electrical pulses and Ca2+ spikes in primary rat hypothalamic neurons, which was dependent on extracellular Cl-. Hypothalamic neurons in brain-s
