Body image, self-esteem, emotion regulation, and eating disorders in adults: a systematic review.

This systematic review examines the connections between eating disorders, body image disturbance, self-esteem, and emotion regulation in adults. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was conducted for articles published between 2010 and June 2024. Studies were included if they involved participants aged 18 years and older, employed validated tools for measuring the variables, and presented original research that specifically addressed these psychological factors. Out of 1117 records, six studies met the inclusion criteria, with mos

Early emotion regulation developmental trajectories and ADHD, internalizing, and conduct problems symptoms in childhood.

Emotion dysregulation is considered a transdiagnostic factor with importance for a range of neurodevelopmental and mental health issues, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, internalizing problems, and conduct problems. Emotion regulation skills are acquired from early in life and are thought to strengthen gradually over childhood. Children, however, acquire these skills at different rates and slower acquisition may serve as a marker for neurodevelopmental and mental health issues. The current study uses the UK Millennium Cohort Study, a large longitudinal study

Emotion Regulation Use Varies Across Socioecological Levels of Pandemic Stress in Older Adults.

OBJECTIVES: COVID-19 escalated stress within family/neighborhood (local) and national/cultural (global) levels. However, the impact of socioecological levels of stress on pandemic emotion regulation remains largely unexplored. METHODS: Thirty older adults from the Northeast US (63-92 years) reported on pandemic stress and emotion regulation in semi-structured interviews. Responses were coded into socioecological sources of local and global stress, and associated use of cognitive emotion regulation strategies from the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire was explored. RESULTS: Older adu

Abnormalities in emotion regulation are associated with negative, but not positive or disorganized schizotypy: An experience sampling study.

BACKGROUND: Schizotypy, a multidimensional construct with positive, negative, and disorganized dimensions, represents a vulnerability marker for the development of schizophrenia. Although there has been increasing evidence linking schizotypy to emotion regulation (ER) deficits, the specific association between different schizotypal dimensions and alterations in ER strategy use in daily life remains poorly understood. METHODS: Using the experience sampling method (ESM), the present study examined the associations between positive, negative, and disorganized schizotypy and ER strategy use in da

Emotion Regulation as a Mechanism of Mindfulness in Individual Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Depression and Anxiety Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders underscores the need for a more profound comprehension of effective treatments. Mindfulness has shown promise in enhancing treatment outcomes and preventing relapse in these conditions, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. METHODS: This study examined the role of emotion regulation as a mediator in the relationship between changes in mindfulness and the reduction of depression and anxiety symptoms during individual cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). We tracked longitudinal changes in mindfulness, emotion

Interoception, emotion regulation strategies and skin-picking behaviors - Results of an intensive longitudinal study.

Compulsive skin-picking is associated with emotion regulation difficulties, whose origins remain unclear. Interoception, plays an important role in effective emotion regulation. This study examined the relationship between interoception, emotion regulation strategies, and skin-picking in 136 individuals (85% women, aged 18-41), including 71 engaging in skin-picking and 65 psychologically healthy controls. We were interested in between-group differences in maladaptive and adaptive emotion regulation and aspects of interoception as well as associations of the latter with skin-picking symptoms an

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Chronic Low Back Pain in Adulthood: The Role of Emotion Regulation.

Chronic low back pain (cLBP) is characterized by biopsychosocial determinants that collectively result in a substantial burden at the individual, community, and health care system levels. A growing body of literature suggests that childhood adversity is longitudinally associated with the development and maintenance of various chronic pain conditions in adulthood. Little research has investigated the psychological processes that might underlie the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and cLBP. Emotion regulation comprises a substantive part of the subjective experience of pa

The cognitive control mechanism of improving emotion regulation: A high-definition tDCS and ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive reappraisal as a commonly used emotion regulation strategy includes reinterpretation and detachment and is associated with the activity of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). However, the neuroenhancement mechanisms of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over DLPFC that modulate cognitive reappraisal are not yet fully understood. This work aims to verify the causal role of DLPFC in different tactics of cognitive reappraisal and further explore the cognitive control mechanisms of emotion regulation. METHODS: A single-blind, within-subjects, sham-control

Food Addiction and Grazing-The Role of Difficulties in Emotion Regulation and Negative Urgency in University Students.

University students are a vulnerable population to the development of disordered eating, such as food addiction (FA) and grazing. FA is an emerging concept characterized by an intense desire to eat hyper-palatable foods. Grazing is characterized by the repetitive and unplanned ingestion of food throughout a period of time. Both FA and grazing have been associated with increased scores of negative urgency (NU) and difficulties in emotion regulation (ER). This study aims to evaluate the frequency of FA and grazing in a university population and to test the direct, total, and indirect effects-via

Emotion regulation training for adolescents with major depression: Results from a randomized controlled trial.

Difficulties in emotion regulation (ER) are thought to contribute to the development and maintenance of major depression (MD) in adolescents. In healthy adults, a task-based training of ER has previously proven effective to reduce stress, but no such studies are available for MD. It is also unclear whether findings can be generalized onto adolescent populations. The final sample consisted of n = 70 adolescents with MD, who were randomized to a task-based ER training (n = 36) or a control training (n = 34). Across four sessions, the ER group was trained to downregulate negative affect to negati
