Environmental DNA Isolation, Validation, and Preservation Methods.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) workflows contain many familiar molecular-lab techniques, but also employ several unique methodologies. When working with eDNA, it is essential to avoid contamination from the point of collection through preservation and select a meaningful negative control. As eDNA can be obtained from a variety of samples and habitats (e.g., soil, water, air, or tissue), protocols will vary depending on usage. Samples may require additional steps to dilute, block, or remove inhibitors or physically break up samples or filters. Thereafter, standard DNA isolation techniques (kit-based

Environmental Justice Index and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The Environmental Justice Index is a tool released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that quantifies and ranks the environmental burden and social vulnerability of each census tract. Racial and ethnic disparities in adverse pregnancy outcomes are well established. The relative contributions of individual (person-level) and environmental (neighborhood-level) risk factors to disease prevalence remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether the Environmental Justice Index is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes after adjustment for in

Recurrent wheezing and asthma-Epidemiology and environmental determinants.

Wheeze is the musical continuous sound produced by oscillations in any critically narrowed airways, and heard mostly on expiration. It is common in preschool age, about half of all children will experience an episode of wheezing by their sixth birthday. Asthma is usually characterized by cough, wheeze, chest tightness and fast breathing. It is a significant global health issue and affects both children and adults. The prevalence is on the increase, especially in LMIC. Studies from different populations have revealed the key role influencing the progression from preschool wheezing to childhood

Challenges and Perspectives of Environmental Catalysis for NO x Reduction.

Environmental catalysis has attracted great interest in air and water purification. Selective catalytic reduction with ammonia (NH3-SCR) as a representative technology of environmental catalysis is of significance to the elimination of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) emitting from stationary and mobile sources. However, the evolving energy landscape in the nonelectric sector and the changing nature of fuel in motor vehicles present new challenges for NO x catalytic purification over the traditional NH3-SCR catalysts. These challenges primarily revolve around the application limitations of conventional

The role of strigolactones in resistance to environmental stress in plants.

Abiotic stress impairs plant growth and development, thereby causing low yield and inferior quality of crops. Increasing studies reported that strigolactones (SL) are plant hormones that enhance plant stress resistance by regulating plant physiological processes and gene expressions. In this review, we introduce the response and regulatory role of SL in salt, drought, light, heat, cold and cadmium stresses in plants. This review also discusses how SL alleviate the damage of abiotic stress in plants, furthermore, introducing the mechanisms of SL enhancing plant stress resistance at the genetic

Eliminating Trachoma in Africa: The Importance of Environmental Interventions.

Subsequent to the failure of the World Health Organisation (WHO) of achieving their target to eliminate trachoma by the year 2020, the most effective strategy in eliminating trachoma must be re-examined to accomplish the new target of eradication by the year 2030. Whilst antibiotic therapy is a core foundation of this elimination strategy, another important factor is the state of the environmental conditions in trachoma endemic countries. This manuscript aimed to identify the impact of environmental improvement strategies on the prevalence of trachoma and the significance of environmental impr

Environmental contamination with Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile in Vietnam.

AIMS: To investigate the prevalence, molecular type, and antimicrobial susceptibility of Clostridioides difficile in the environment in Vietnam, where little is known about C. difficile. METHODS AND RESULTS: Samples of pig faeces, soils from pig farms, potatoes, and the hospital environment were cultured for C. difficile. Isolates were identified and typed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) ribotyping. The overall prevalence of C. difficile contamination was 24.5% (68/278). Clostridioides difficile was detected mainly in soils from pig farms and hospital soils, with 70%-100% prevalence. Clost

Will male semen quality improve with environmental quality?

Wenzhou has improved its environmental quality because of comprehensive environmental remediation; nevertheless, the semen quality of infertile males remains unclear. This study determined whether better environmental quality improved semen quality in this region. We recorded semen quality data from 22 962 infertile males from January 2014 to November 2019 at the Center for Reproductive Health of The First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University (Wenzhou, China). Patients were predominantly 30-35 years old (33.1%) and workers (82.0%), with high school education or lower (77.6%); more

From preschool wheezing to asthma: Environmental determinants.

Wheezing is common among preschool children, representing a group of highly heterogeneous conditions with varying natural history. Several phenotypes of wheezing have been proposed to facilitate the identification of young children who are at risk of subsequent development of asthma. Epidemiological and immunological studies across different populations have revealed the key role of environmental factors in influencing the progression from preschool wheezing to childhood asthma. Significant risk factors include severe respiratory infections, allergic sensitization, and exposure to tobacco smok

Short-term environmental triggers of hemorrhagic stroke.

Hemorrhagic stroke (HS) is associated with severe morbidity and high mortality. Identifying the trigger factors for HS is critical for disease prevention. This study aimed to assess the associations between short-term environmental triggers (STETs) and HS risk. We systematically searched six databases for articles published up to September 9, 2022. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated using random-effect models to evaluate the associations between STETs and the risk of HS. Heterogeneity was assessed using Cochran Q and I2 tests. A total of 63 studies

A systematic review on environmental perspectives of monkeypox virus.

Monkeypox (MPX) is one of the common infections between humans and animals that caused by a virus belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus. The Monkeypox virus (MPXV) outbreak is a global crisis triggered by environmental factors (virus, wastewater, surface, air) and amplified by the decisions of government officials and communities. The aim of this systematic review is to describe the environmental perspectives of MPXV with emphasis on risk assessment to prevent and control a new pandemic. Five online databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct and Google Scholar were searc

Is the presence of mosquitoes an indicator of poor environmental sanitation?

The World Health Organization has designated mosquitoes as the most lethal animal since they are known to spread pathogen-transmitting organisms. Understanding the many environmental elements that contribute to the spread of these vectors is one of the many strategies used to stop them. If there are mosquitoes around people, it may indicate that there is not an appropriate environmental sanitation program in place in the community or region. Environmental sanitation involves improving any elements of the physical environment that could have a negative impact on a person's survival, health, or

Genetic and Environmental Determinants of Beef Quality-A Review.

The flavor, quality, and composition of beef changes with the cattle diet regimen. The quality of meat varies, and that variability is determined by both individual and environmental factors: age, breed, live weight, fatness degree, plane of nutrition, and concentrate/roughage ratio. The strategy for the rearing and feeding of cattle for slaughter should therefore aim at reducing the saturated fatty acid content and increasing the polyunsaturated fatty acid and monounsaturated fatty acid levels. Many diseases in humans, like atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases, are associated with diet

Medications, Genes, Environmental Stress, and Pursuit of Recovery.

This column summarizes the findings of 2 recent studies of interest to psychotherapists. One study reports that the use of antidepressant medication is not associated with long-term improvement in health-related quality of life, while the other finds that psychotic experiences in adolescents are more closely associated with environmental experiences than with genetic risk. The column discusses the implications of these studies for psychotherapists and for the field at large.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy as a Preventable Environmental Disease.

In this Perspective we explore the evolution of our understanding of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and its relationship with repetitive head injury. As with many neurodegenerative conditions, there is an imperfect correspondence between neuropathology and clinical phenotype, but unlike other neurodegenerative diseases, CTE has a discrete and easily modifiable risk factor: exposure to repetitive head injury. Consequently, evaluation of the evidence regarding exposure to repetitive head injury and CTE risk should be undertaken using public or occupational health frameworks of medical kn
