Nitric-oxide synthases (NOS) are homodimeric proteins and can form an intersubunit Zn(4S) cluster. This study was conducted to determine the origin of the high variability in the mean nocturnal plasma melatonin concentration (MC) in sheep. Two extreme groups of 25 lambs each [low (L) and high (H)] were obtained by calculating their genetic value on the basis of the MC of their parents. Intestinal ischemia was created after a limited laparotomy by ligation of the terminal mesenteric vessels in the last 10 cm of distal ileum in 2-day-old piglets. Five groups (each n = 15) were studied: 1 (unoperated control group, killed on day 4), 2 (sham control with laparotomy, killed on day 4), 3 (ischemia, killed on day 4), 4 (ischemia, killed on day 9), and 5 (unoperated control on day 9, not killed). In order to identify non-invasive, biochemical indicators of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) exposure, we have compared the effects in blood serum with biochemical effects in liver in rats fed a diet containing 0, 0.25, 0.75 and 2% DEHP for 2 weeks.
