The top 100 most cited articles in acne vulgaris: a bibliometric analysis.

A substantial body of literature has been published on acne vulgaris (AV) in the past five decades. Bibliometric analysis (BA) is a scientific, statistical evaluation review of published articles, providing a quantitative assessment of past research. The Web of Science (webOS) citation indexing database was used on 11 June 2023 to identify the top 100 cited articles on AV. Articles were listed in descending order by their annual citation (AC). Data sets were then subdivided into senior author, year and age of publication, journal and its impact factor, the number of total citations according t

Rabies elimination research: juxtaposing optimism, pragmatism and realism.

More than 100 years of research has now been conducted into the prevention, control and elimination of rabies with safe and highly efficacious vaccines developed for use in human and animal populations. Domestic dogs are a major reservoir for rabies, and although considerable advances have been made towards the elimination and control of canine rabies in many parts of the world, the disease continues to kill tens of thousands of people every year in Africa and Asia. Policy efforts are now being directed towards a global target of zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030 and the globa

Development of a new quantitative RT-PCR to detect lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus.

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) is a neglected rodent-borne virus, with a worldwide distribution. The common mouse Mus musculus acts as reservoir and vector in the biological cycle of the virus. Surveillance of LCMV infection in mice is of importance as they are a widely used animal model in research and, through contact with them or their fluids, humans can be infected. Although most human cases are asymptomatic, LCMV infection can cause mild to severe, even fatal, and new diagnostic tools need to be developed to improve its detection. In the present work we report the development o

Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults: Synopsis of the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Hypertension Guideline.

BACKGROUND: The regression discontinuity design (RDD) is a quasi-experimental approach used to avoid confounding bias in the assessment of new policies and interventions. It is applied specifically in situations where individuals are assigned to a policy/intervention based on whether they are above or below a pre-specified cut-off on a continuously measured variable, such as birth date, income or weight. The strength of the design is that, provided individuals do not manipulate the value of this variable, assignment to the policy/intervention is considered as good as random for individuals clo

Diet and Chronic Disease Research in the Women's Health Initiative.

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) has been a major contributor to diet and chronic disease research among postmenopausal US women over its 30+ year history (1993 to present). The WHI program included full-scale randomized trials of a low-fat dietary pattern high in fruits, vegetables, and grains, and of calcium and vitamin D supplementation, each with designated primary and secondary chronic disease outcomes. The history of these trials will be briefly reviewed here, along with principal findings that included evidence for breast cancer-related benefits for each of the 2 interventions. In re

ICNIRP Guidelines' Exposure Assessment Method for 5G Millimetre Wave Radiation May Trigger Adverse Effects.

The current global roll-out of 5G infrastructure is designed to utilise millimetre wave frequencies (30-300 GHz range) at data transmission rates in the order of gigabits per second (Gbps). This frequency band will be transmitted using beamforming, a new introduction in near-field exposures. The International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) has recently updated their guidelines. We briefly examine whether the new approach of the ICNIRP is satisfactory to prevent heat damage and other adverse bio-effects once millimetre wave 5G is included, and we challenge the use of s

Autonomic dysfunction in Parkinson's disease: Implications for pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease with a 200 year-long research history. Our understanding about its clinical phenotype and pathogenesis remains limited, although dopaminergic replacement therapy has significantly improved patient outcomes. Autonomic dysfunction is an essential category of non-motor phenotypes that has recently become a cutting edge field that directs frontier research in PD. In this review, we initially describe the epidemiology of dysautonomic symptoms in PD. Then, we perform a meticulous analysis of the pathophysiology of autonomic dysfunction in PD an

USP38, FREM3, SDC1, DDC, and LOC727982 Gene Polymorphisms and Differential Susceptibility to Severe Malaria in Tanzania.

Populations exposed to Plasmodium falciparum infection develop genetic mechanisms of protection against severe malarial disease. Despite decades of genetic epidemiological research, the sickle cell trait (HbAS) sickle cell polymorphism, ABO blood group, and other hemoglobinopathies remain the few major determinants in severe malaria to be replicated across different African populations and study designs. Within a case-control study in a region of high transmission in Tanzania (n = 983), we investigated the role of 40 new loci identified in recent genome-wide studies. In 32 loci passing quality

Preparing for the unexpected: the pivotal role of social and behavioral sciences in trials of biomedical HIV prevention interventions.

A range of efficacies have been reported for biomedical HIV prevention interventions, including antiretroviral treatment, male circumcision, preexposure prophylaxis, microbicides, and preventive vaccines. This range of efficacies probably results from the influence of multiple inputs and processes during trials, including the strength and target of the intervention, host factors, target population characteristics, level of HIV exposure, and intervention dose. Expertise in social and behavioral sciences, in conjunction with basic science, clinical research, epidemiology, biostatistics, and comm

Down Syndrome: Evaluating Disparities in Place of Death in the United States Using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC-WONDER) Database Over 22 Years.

INTRODUCTION: The Uniform Determination of Death Act (UDDA) ensures that individuals with irreversible cessation of circulatory, respiratory, or brain functions receive timely palliative care. Our research has focused on identifying disparities in mortality among individuals with Down syndrome (DS) based on gender, age, racial groups, and geographic regions within the United States over 22 years. This study aims to analyze differences in the location of death, including hospitals, nursing homes, hospice care facilities, and unspecified locations, considering demographic and regional variables.

Modeling a methylmalonic acid-derived change point for serum vitamin B-12 for adults in NHANES.

BACKGROUND: No consensus exists about which cutoff point should be applied for serum vitamin B-12 (SB-12) concentrations to define vitamin B-12 status in population-based research. OBJECTIVE: The study's aim was to identify whether a change point exists at which the relation between plasma methylmalonic acid (MMA) and SB-12 changes slope to differentiate between inadequate and adequate vitamin B-12 status by using various statistical models. DESIGN: We used data on adults (≥19 y; n = 12,683) from NHANES 1999-2004-a nationally representative, cross-sectional survey. We evaluated 6 piece-wise

A new wearable device for supporting myopia epidemiology studies.

SIGNIFICANCE: The prevalence of myopia is increasing worldwide and is closely associated with nearwork. Reliable and objective estimates of nearwork, based on measuring the distance to a visual target, are limited to only a few commercially available wearable instruments that have limitations for laboratory research and large epidemiological studies. PURPOSE: The aim was to design a fully controllable, low-cost, and low-energy-consumption wearable device and evaluate its accuracy, compare it with a commercially available device, and evaluate through simulations how this accuracy affects estim

Does emotional stress cause type 2 diabetes mellitus? A review from the European Depression in Diabetes (EDID) Research Consortium.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 220 million people worldwide have type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients with type 2 diabetes not only have a chronic disease to cope with, they are also at increased risk for coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. The exact causes of type 2 diabetes are still not clear. Since the 17th century, it has been suggested that emotional stress plays a role in the etiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus. So far, review studies have mainly focused on depression as a risk factor for the developmen
