PURPOSE: Pediatric tracheostomy tubes (TT) are frequently colonized by bacteria and biofilm, and evidence regarding optimal cleaning methods remains limited, particularly in the context of recent global shortages encouraging tube reuse. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a standardized cleaning protocol for pediatric TT by comparing microbiological cultures obtained before and after cleaning. Secondary objectives included characterizing TT microbiology and exploring the use of a dental plaque disclosing solution as a qualitative marker of biofilm presence.

Accurate blood culture collection is essential for guiding appropriate antibiotic therapy, with contamination posing a risk to diagnostic reliability. The American Society for Microbiology recommends contamination rates below 3% for optimal patient outcomes. In collaboration with the emergency and microbiology departments, a large rural hospital implemented a standardized blood culture collection kit as a quality improvement initiative that led to a reduction in contamination rates, reaching a low of 0.97% over several months.

BACKGROUND: Dental handpieces (DHPs) are reusable invasive medical devices that must be cleaned, decontaminated, lubricated and steam sterilized after use. DHPs have a complex internal design including narrow channels, contamination of which can compromise sterilization. DHPs are not designed for routine disassembly, making cleaning/decontamination efficacy difficult to monitor. Washer-disinfection is the preferred method of decontaminating DHPs, but few studies have investigated its direct effectiveness at reducing microbial contamination internally.
