Endogenous catecholamine concentrations in the rat iris-ciliary body (ICB) were determined using the technique of microwave irradiation, whereby enzymes are inactivated within milliseconds, and high performance liquid chromatography. Rats were sacrificed by microwave irradiation at 9.5 kW at 2450 MHz for 0.9 seconds. The eyes were enucleated, the ICBs isolated, and 10 ICBs from 10 eyes were treated as one sample. Because of its rarity, the diagnosis of optic nerve medulloepithelioma poses a real diagnostic challenge. PURPOSE: To describe a case of Pseudomonas aeruginosa septicemia complicated by orbital cellulitis, panophthalmitis, and ecthyma gangrenosum.
DESIGN: Observational case report.
METHODS: An immunosuppressed 62-year-old man developed an unusual skin rash and a painful, swollen right eye with decreased vision. He had myelodysplastic syndrome and P. aeruginosa septicemia. The skin rash manifested as ecthyma gangrenosum. Metastatic orbital cellulitis and panophthalmitis was diagnosed.
RESULTS: Despite intravitreal and topical gentamicin, the patient eventually required enucleation.

A 55-yr-old African American man was referred for evaluation of a mass involving the anterior choroid/ciliary body in his left eye. Dilated fundus examination revealed a large, deeply pigmented mass associated with an exudative retinal detachment. Ultrasonography demonstrated an elevated mass which involved the anterior uvea and showed low reflectivity by standardized A-scan. INTRODUCTION: Detecting high risk characteristics in intraocular retinoblastoma is important for determining metastatic risk.
METHODS: In this pilot study, preoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) radiomics data were compared to high-risk histopathology features after enucleation. A total of 2142 MRI features were extracted, and relevant features were selected to create predictive models for optic nerve and choroidal invasion.

Of 105 eyes with ocular injuries involving retained intraocular foreign bodies, 63 (60%) had a final visual acuity of 20/40 or better; 20 (19%) were 20/50 to 5/200; and 15 (14%) were worse than 5/200. Six eyes (6%) were enucleated. The extent of visual recovery was limited in selected cases by the characteristics of the initial injury. Multivariate analysis was used to identify prognostic factors. Predictive of a good visual outcome (greater than or equal to 20/40) were: (1) initial visual acuity better than 20/40 and (2) the need for only one or two operations in the treatment of the injury.

PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the efficacy of plaque brachytherapy for the treatment of retinoblastoma.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of 163 patients (186 eyes, 333 tumors) treated with brachytherapy (106Ru or 90Sr plaques) for intraocular retinoblastoma between November 2007 and August 2023.

PATIENT: A 55-year-old man was treated twice with local excision and crycoagulation for a recurrent limbal mass of the left eye. The original histologic diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma.
