Infectious keratitis: what have we learned?

Contact lenses for correction of refractive error provide for one of the safest and most effective methods of intervention of any of the medical devices. Despite the relatively low incidence of adverse outcomes, when these do occur they may be associated with serious morbidity. Consistent with this risk, albeit relatively low, the industry has made great strides in understanding the complexities of the effect of the lens on the ocular environment, leading to materials and solutions which if used correctly could potentially lower morbidity significantly. Recent outbreaks of unusual adverse even

[Panuveitis of infectious genesis].

In a patient with sub-acute loss of vision a panuveitis with papillitis and chorioretinitis was diagnosed within an initial diagnosis of lues and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Epidemiological data show an increasing incidence of HIV and lues infections in recent years. Therefore, ophthalmologists need to bear an infectious etiology of inflammation of the eye in mind.

Group C streptococcal endocarditis.

Group C streptococcus is found in many domestic animals and rarely causes infection in human beings. Severe infections caused by these bacteria are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. We present a case of group C streptococcus endocarditis with sequelae, right-eye endophthalmitis, and multilobar pneumonia caused by septic embolization from the infected mitral valve.

Bilateral panophthalmitis as the initial presentation of meningococcal meningitis in an infant.

Endophthalmitis is a well-recognized, frequently devastating ophthalmic disease. The colonization of the eye and the subsequent development of endophthalmitis may be exogenous (including postsurgical and post-traumatic infections) or it may be of endogenous origin, representing a metastasis from a focus of infection elsewhere in the body associated with bacteremia (such as meningitis or cellulitis).

A primate model for acute and recurrent herpetic keratitis.

Twelve squirrel monkeys were inoculated in both eyes with the Rodanus strain of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and were examined for the presence of acute epithelial keratitis. All of the eyes developed dendritic keratitis within 72 hours after inoculation. The twelve monkeys plus two additional similarly infected monkeys were also examined for the presence of clinical recurrences of ocular herpes infections and spontaneous shedding of virus in their tears. Two of the eyes developed stromal disease, and 13 of the monkeys had at least one episode of recurrent clinical epithelial disease. V

The experimental and clinical use of polymyxin, chloromycetin, and aureomycin.

Polymyxin is an effective antibiotic for the treatment of severe infections produced by Ps. aeruginosa, H. pertussis, H. influenzae, E. coli, and A. aerogenes. Its toxicity to date precludes its general use in infections susceptible to its therapeutic effects. Chloromycetin has been demonstrated to be an effective antibiotic agent for the treatment of rickettsial diseases and typhoid fever. It will undoubtedly prove effective in the treatment of other infections produced by certain Gram-negative micro-organisms and viral agents. Aureomycin has been shown to be an active antibiotic agent agains

SARS-CoV-2 and the Eyes: A Review of the Literature on Transmission, Detection, and Ocular Manifestations.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, numerous reports of ocular anomalies occurring in patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have emerged. The most frequently reported pathology is conjunctivitis, which may be the first or only clinical manifestation of the disease. Involvement of SARS-CoV-2 in development of alterations in other ocular structures was suggested, including the cornea, the retina, and blood vessels. Possible mechanisms include direct activity of the viral agent, as well as systemic inflammatory response with accom
