BACKGROUND: Leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors that are rarely diagnosed in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review summarizes the histopathologic and clinical tumor characteristics, surgical management, and follow-up of sinonasal leiomyomas.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature on sinonasal leiomyoma was performed by applying the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies that met the inclusion criteria were assessed for level of evidence. Patient demographics, clinical and pathological

INTRODUCTION: Malignant chondroid syringomas, also known as cutaneous malignant mixed tumors, are rare neoplasms that most frequently occur on the torso or extremities of women. Here, we present an illustrated case of a facial malignant chondroid syringoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 32-year-old female patient with no notable medical history presented with an approximately 1cm-wide, painless, palpably-mobile subcutaneous nodule, suggestive of a sebaceous cyst, just above the middle third of the right eyebrow. The nodule had grown steadily over six months. She had no palpable cervical lymphadeno

PURPOSE: To compare the success rates of revision surgeries with transcanalicular diode laser (TCDL) and external approaches in cases with failed TCDL dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR).
METHODS: The medical records of the consecutive TCDL DCR surgeries performed for nasolacrimal duct obstruction between October 2009 and March 2013 were reviewed. Cases with the presence of canalicular stenosis, bone deformities, lacrimal sac neoplasms, additional intranasal deformities, dacryolithiasis, history of previous nasolacrimal surgery, and follow up less than 3 months were excluded from the study. OBJECTIVE: Facial nerve preservation and oncological safety are crucial in surgery of parotid tumors. An unexpected histopathologic diagnosis of a malignant parotid tumor, however, may unfavorably require a second, more radical surgery. The aim of this study was to find out whether the assessment of serological tumor markers in parotid saliva might have some diagnostic significance in the preoperative differentiation between benign and malignant parotid lesions. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, PATIENTS, AND METHODS: In a prospective pilot study performed at a university medical center in 28 patients wi

Facial hemangiomas are benign vascular neoplasms of infancy and childhood. Although most hemangiomas do not result in significant complications, some result in pain, ulceration, infection, and structural abnormalities and can interfere with respiration, vision, and hearing. A 5-month-old infant presented to the author's wound center with a necrotic wound within a large, segmental hemangioma of mixed superficial and deep morphology; her vision was obstructed. The patient's discomfort was indicated by poor feeding and irritability. The hemangioma had been treated with oral corticosteroids and la

A disparate group of salivary gland neoplasms is characterized by small, uniform, hyperchromatic, basaloid cells. This "small blue cell" pattern is most common in non-Warthin's types of monomorphic adenoma, or in adenoid cystic carcinoma. Small cell anaplastic carcinoma (primary or metastatic), metastatic basaloid squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell adenocarcinoma, and metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma are rarely encountered but may present a cytologically similar appearance. We report one female and two male patients (median age = 84 yr) with cutaneous-type basal cell carcinoma (BCC) aspira

Case records of 450 horses with signs of neurological disease are reviewed. One hundred and nineteen horses with neurological disease due to trauma were examined, of which 60 were due to spinal cord trauma, 47 to brain or cranial nerve trauma and 12 to peripheral nerve trauma. Cervical vertebral fractures/trauma were the most common injury. Basisphenoid/basioccipital bone fractures were the most common form of cranial trauma and facial nerve paralysis the most common cranial nerve injury. Eighty-nine horses with neurological disease due to malformation were examined. Cervical vertebral malform

The heterotopic transfer of composite tissue, with microvascular anastomosis of an arterial supply and venous drainage to locally existing vessels, has received considerable attention in the plastic surgical literature. The use of latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous free flaps has been reported in the repair of large defects of the scalp, cranium, and dura following resection of invasive neoplasms or trauma. When the defect involves primarily subcutaneous tissue loss resulting in abnormal contour, omental free flaps provide effective coverage and restoration of contour. In addition, the inherent

With an incidence of approximately 30% of all oral cavity neoplasms, lip cancer significantly impacts the patient quality of life (QoL). The frequent localization is in the lower lip, predominantly affecting men aged between 60-70 years old. The surgical treatment aims at aesthetic and functional reconstruction of the lip. The present study aims at defining a demographic profile of patients with lip cancer and at establishing correlations between tumor characteristics and reconstruction methods. The analysis of the group of 26 patients showed that the lip cancer patient was predominantly femal

BACKGROUND: Von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) is an autosomal dominant tumor predisposition syndrome caused by mutations in the VHL gene. Patients with VHL are predisposed to developing numerous neoplasms, including central nervous system hemangioblastomas that typically arise within the cerebellum, brainstem, or spinal cord. The authors present the unusual case of a 69-year-old patient with a hemangioblastoma of the trigeminal nerve as his initial presentation of VHL.
OBSERVATIONS: A 69-year-old male presented with progressive right-sided V3 paresthesias, gait disturbance, and diplopia. Magnet

Breach in the palatal vault leading to an abnormal communication between oral and nasal cavity is known as oro-nasal communication. It is an uncommon presentation in day-to-day clinical practice except in some patients of cleft lip and palate.Etiology may be congenital or acquired. Alveolar and palatal cleft defects are the most common etiological factor. The acquired causes may be trauma, periapical pathology, infections, neoplasms, postsurgical complications, and radio and chemo necrosis.Clinical features like nasal regurgitation of food, defective speech, fetid odor, bad taste, and upper re

Endolymphatic sac tumors (ELSTs) are locally invasive neoplasms that arise in the posterior petrous bone and are associated with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease. These tumors cause symptoms even when microscopic in size (below the threshold for detectability on imaging studies) and can lead to symptoms such as hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, and facial nerve dysfunction. While the mechanisms of audiovestibular dysfunction in patients harboring ELSTs are incompletely understood, they have critical implications for management. The authors present the case of a 33-year-old man with VHL disease a

Basosquamous cell carcinomas (BSCs) are very rare and behave aggressively, with features of both basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The diagnosis of BSC includes a spectrum of histologic definitions, ranging from coexistence of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma with or without a transition zone, to any basal cell carcinoma with evidence of keratinization.A 63-year-old man presented with a BSC within a chronic periorbital wound, which was confirmed through a postoperative histologic examination. The wound was created from a previous laser ablation of a diagnosed ba
