Quorum sensing is the phenomenon, whereby bacteria use signal molecules to communicate with each other. For example, to establish a successful infection, pathogenic bacteria become virulent only when they reach a certain local concentration in their host. Bassler and others have highlighted the surprising observation that quorum sensing seems to repress Vibrio cholerae virulence factor expression (e.g. cholera toxin), in contrast to what has been observed for virulence gene expression in other bacteria. The course of haemostasis defects was investigated in dimethylnitrosamine (DMNA) acute liver necrosis. Before 18 hr there was no evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) nor of abnormal fibrinolysis. The inherited deficiencies of protein C, protein S, antithrombin III, factor V Leiden mutation, prothrombin gene polymorphism, and antiphospholipids were studied in 53 Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) and 33 portal vein thrombosis (PVT) cases and compared with 223 age- and sex-matched controls.
