Short communication: Accuracy of estimation of lameness, injury, and cleanliness prevalence by dairy farmers and veterinarians.

Lameness, injuries, and cleanliness are considered important indicators of dairy cow welfare, milk production, and milk quality. Previous research has identified that farmers globally underestimate the prevalence of these cow-based measurements, but no information on the perceptions of veterinarians is available. Because veterinarians are often perceived as the main providers of health advice on farms, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between the true prevalence of lameness, injury (hock, knee, neck), and cleanliness (udder, legs, flanks), and the estimated p…

Do UK sheep farmers use orf vaccine correctly and could their vaccination strategy affect vaccine efficacy?

Orf, a parapoxvirus, is a zoonosis causing a contagious pustular dermatitis, and has a high morbidity in sheep worldwide. Despite a vaccine being available, orf prevalence in England is estimated to be 2 per cent in ewes and 20 per cent in lambs. There is concern that farmers are not complying with the vaccination guidelines and therefore the objective of this study was to investigate if orf vaccine is used correctly on sheep farms in the UK and to identify barriers and motivators of sheep farmers to use the vaccine. The survey was completed by 570 respondents. The results show several areas…

Rift Valley Fever Virus Exposure amongst Farmers, Farm Workers, and Veterinary Professionals in Central South Africa.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a re-emerging arboviral disease of public health and veterinary importance in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Major RVF epidemics were documented in South Africa in 1950⁻1951, 1974⁻1975, and 2010⁻2011. The number of individuals infected during these outbreaks has, however, not been accurately estimated. A total of 823 people in close occupational contact with livestock were interviewed and sampled over a six-month period in 2015⁻2016 within a 40,000 km² study area encompassing parts of the Free State and Northern Cape provinces that were affected during the 2010⁻20

Association between pesticide exposure intensity and self-rated health among greenhouse vegetable farmers in Ningxia, China.

BACKGROUND: Self-rated health (SRH) has been shown to be a stronger comprehensive predictor of health status than the clinical record. Although an association between specific pesticide exposures and health conditions has been reported in different populations, data on the relationship between pesticides exposure intensity (PEI) and SRH in greenhouse farmers is scarce. The aim of the current study was to evaluate this association among vegetable greenhouse farmers in Yinchuan City, western China. METHODS: Three consecutive cross-sectional studies were conducted in the years 2015, 2016 and 201…

A quantitative analysis of attitudes and behaviours concerning sustainable parasite control practices from Scottish sheep farmers.

Nematode control in sheep, by strategic use of anthelmintics, is threatened by the emergence of roundworms populations that are resistant to one or more of the currently available drugs. In response to growing concerns of Anthelmintic Resistance (AR) development in UK sheep flocks, the Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep (SCOPS) initiative was set up in 2003 in order to promote practical guidelines for producers and advisors. To facilitate the uptake of 'best practice' approaches to nematode management, a comprehensive understanding of the various factors influencing sheep farmers' adopt…

Is Hiding Foot and Mouth Disease Sensitive Behavior for Farmers? A Survey Study in Sri Lanka.

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) has a long history in Sri Lanka and was found to be endemic in various parts of the country and constitutes a constant threat to farmers. In Sri Lanka, currently there is no regular, nationwide vaccination programme devised to control FMD. Therefore, improving farmers' knowledge regarding distinguishing FMD from other diseases and ensuring prompt reporting of any suspicion of FMD as well as restricting movement of animals are critical activities for an effective FMD response effort. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between f…

Studies on vesical schistosomiasis among rural Ezza farmers in the southwestern border of Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

OBJECTIVES: The activity of the Wnt pathway, a critical mediator of fibrosis, is regulated by Dickkopf-1 (Dkk-1). Dkk-1 is absent from scleroderma skin in contrast to skin from healthy subjects where it is clearly expressed. There are no data on circulating levels and function of Dkk-1 in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Our objectives are to assess: i) circulating and functional levels of Dkk-1 in patients with SSc and ii) whether the striking lack of Dkk-1 skin expression is also evident in a) clinically uninvolved skin from patients with SSc and b) very early disease prior to skin th

[Incidence of tick-borne encephalitis virus and Borrelia burgdorferi infections in farmers of the Lublin province].

The objective of the study was to evaluate the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis virus and Borrelia burgdorferi infections in farmers of the Lublin province. The study involved sero-epidemiological examinations of 242 farmers (the study group) and 50 healthy urban blood donors (the control group). In both tick-transmitted diseases, the frequency of sero-positive reactions was significantly higher in farmers than in controls. Serological examinations for the detection of tick-borne encephalitis showed 17.3% of positive results among farmers, and only 6.0% (p < 0.05) in the control group. The…

Serum levels of several organochlorine pesticides in farmers correspond with dietary exposure and local use history.

In response to reported increased cancer risks among farmers, the Agricultural Health Study (AHS) was designed to examine health outcomes and environmental exposures among farm families in the United States. In the pilot phase of the AHS, food, beverage, air, dermal, dust, surface wipe, and biological specimens (blood and urine) were collected and analyzed for six farm families in two states (IA and NC). In addition, questionnaires were administered to examine previous pesticide use. This paper reports the organochlorine pesticide results of the serum and dietary analyses as well as questionna…

Farmers lung: a three year survey and comparison of ELISA and CIEP techniques in antibody detection.

The incidence of detection of antibodies against antigens derived from two thermophilic actinomycetes in patients clinically suspected of having Farmer's Lung was assessed. Approximately 25% of samples submitted over a three year period were found to be positive in either the ELISA test or the CIEP test for antigens derived from M. faeni and T. vulgaris. The ELISA test proved to be more sensitive than the CIEP test in the detection of antibodies directed against both organisms.

Farmers' perceptions, management practices, and economic impacts of cattle tick (Acari: Ixodidae) infestations in northwest Ethiopia.

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are significant ectoparasites that impair cattle production and threaten the livelihoods of Ethiopian livestock producers. However, there is no evidence about farmers' perceptions, tick management methods, and the resulting economic losses. This study assessed cattle owners' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) about tick infestations and estimated the annual economic losses caused by ticks in northwest Ethiopia. Between March 2022 and June 2023, a cross-sectional survey was conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire with 413 randomly selected cattle owners. A…

Usability evaluation of a new point of care rapid diagnostic test for use by UK farmers.

INTRODUCTION: The liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, is considered one of the principal issues affecting the health and productivity of the UK sheep population. Diagnostic testing is advised to ensure appropriate use of treatment. A new lateral flow test to detect antibodies to liver fluke has recently been developed for use by farmers. Point of care rapid diagnostic tests are rare in agriculture so this represents a novel innovation in this sector. METHODS: Prototype test kits and accompanying guidance were taken to six farms for initial usability evaluation, before commercial launch of the tes…

Trust and professional relationships drive participation in passive cattle health surveillance among Dutch farmers and veterinarians.

Active involvement of farmers and veterinarians is crucial for the effectiveness of passive surveillance. This study aimed to identify the psychosocial factors influencing farmers' and veterinarians' decisions to contact a veterinary helpdesk or the competent authorities regarding cattle health concerns in the Netherlands. We used the COM-B model: for any Behavior (B) to occur, an individual must have the Capability (C), Opportunity (O), and Motivation (M) to perform it. Two separate surveys (for farmers or veterinarians) with Likert-scale statements informed by the COM-B behavioral framework …

Uncovering Health Hazards from Agricultural Practices Among Farmers in a Caribbean Country: A Cross-Sectional Study.

HIGHLIGHTS: There is a need to close the gap in farmers' knowledge about natural pesticides and safer alternatives to agrochemicals. A system for routine, affordable medical care would encourage clinical presentation to capture occupational health data. Appropriate content and medium are critical for impact among the high number of farmers completing only primary school. ABSTRACT: Globally, low- and middle-income countries bear the highest disease burden from the indiscriminate use of agrochemicals. Few recent studies directly assess agrihealth and food safety hazards from pesticide use in th…

On-farm management of vaginal prolapse in ewes: A cross-sectional survey of UK sheep farmers.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal prolapse affects lambing ewes, usually before parturition. Prevalence is variable but may reach 10% in severely affected flocks. The prolapse is usually managed on-farm without veterinary intervention. Welfare concerns were highlighted around 20 years ago around specific management practices, but these have not been re-examined since. The aim of this study was to explore how farmers manage vaginal prolapses in their lambing ewes. METHODS: A cross-sectional online study was circulated among UK sheep farmers between 11 June and 1 August 2025, collecting information regarding…
