BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but life-threatening soft-tissue infection primarily involving the superficial fascia and subcutaneous tissue.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 44 patients with necrotizing fasciitis between 2004 and 2008 in Akdeniz University Hospital, Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology and other departments. The aim of this study was to determine the causative agents of the necrotizing fasciitis, and the localization, predisposing factors, and comorbid conditions.
RESULTS: We found that diabetes mellitus, trauma and surgery

Necrotizing fasciitis colli is a rare, but life-threatening disease. A 43-year-old female patient was admitted to our department because of increasing dysphagia and slight swelling of the left side of her neck due to severe necrotizing pharyngolaryngitis. Initial treatment with cephalosporin I was ineffective. The patient developed a rapidly spreading necrotizing fasciitis of the neck requiring open surgery for débridement and drainage as well as tracheostomy. Microbiological analysis revealed Serratia marcescens, thus allowing targeted and ultimately successful antibiotic therapy. The case sh

We present a case series of patients who underwent simple perianal procedures outside this hospital but developed postoperative and life-threatening retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis. With a high index of clinical suspicion and radiological imaging, we were able to establish earlier diagnosis. Resuscitation, the use of intravenous broad-spectrum antibiotics, aggressive surgical debridement and continuous organ support were essential in achieving a positive outcome in both of these patients.

OBJECTIVE: Necrotizing fasciitis is a life threatening soft-tissue infection with a high morbidity and mortality. Prompt treatment based on extensive surgical debridement and antibiotic therapies are the therapeutic principles.
METHODS: The medical records of patients with necrotizing fasciitis (n = 26) from 1996 to 2005 were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: The localization of necrotizing fasciitis was most commonly the trunk (42.3 %). Type I polymicrobial infection was the dominating infection. The involvement of anaerobic bacteria was associated with an increase in the number of surgica

OBJECTIVE: We wanted to evaluate the MR findings for differentiating between necrotizing fasciitis (NF) and pyomyositis (PM).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MR images of 19 patients with surgically confirmed NF (n = 11) and pathologically confirmed PM (n = 8) were retrospectively reviewed with regard to the presence or absence of any MRI finding criteria that could differentiate between them.
RESULTS: The patients with NF had a significantly greater prevalence of the following MR findings (p < 0.05): a peripheral band-like hyperintense signal in muscles on fat-suppressed T2-weighted images (73%

Casts may be associated with, and mask, serious life-threatening complications, including infection, compartment syndrome, and deep vein thrombosis with or without pulmonary embolism. A 43-year-old woman had necrotizing fasciitis associated with a closed-reduction casting of a tibial fracture. Her treatment highlights the importance of removing a cast and assessing the skin and tissue underneath for signs of infection in patients with suspected infection. Thorough assessment, early diagnosis, and early intervention in necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis are important to improve patients' outcomes

Current concepts of the pathophysiology of necrotizing fasciitis (NF), a life-threatening infection of soft tissues associated with a toxic shock syndrome, emphasizes the role of bacterial superantigens as mediators of cytokine release by immune lymphocytes. In order to assess the cellular basis of immune activation, immunohistochemistry was applied to the analysis of inflammatory cell subsets in situ in 13 patients with NF. The percentage of inflammatory cells in skin and soft tissue was scored from 0 to 3+ (>50%). Substantial numbers of CD15+ polymorphonuclear leukocytes were present in 12 o

BACKGROUND: Early recognition of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) can be difficult, but is important as infections progress rapidly and have significant mortality. The aim of this study of patients with NF was to determine the clinical characteristics at presentation, causative pathogens and subsequent clinical outcome.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients with NF presenting to Middlemore Hospital from January 2000 to June 2006.
RESULTS: Eighty-two patients were evaluated: 56% male, mean age 54.9 years (standard deviation 18.5), 40% Pacific Islanders. The site of infection was

Acute appendicitis is one of the most common surgical emergencies. Accurate diagnosis is often hindered due to various presentations that differ from the typical signs of appendicitis, especially the position of the appendix. A delay in treatment increases the likelihood of complications such as perforation, which is associated with an increase in morbidity and mortality rates. We herein present the case of a 76-year-old woman presenting with necrotizing fasciitis of the abdominal wall and right flank regions due to a perforated appendix. Such complication is extremely rare but life-threatenin

UNLABELLED: We report a case of cervical necrotizing fasciitis complicating dental infection in a 36-year-old man, who presented with infection involving mucosa of the right maxilla, mandible, parapharyngeal and masticator spaces, requiring extensive surgery and antibiotic therapy. The initial presentation, radiological appearance and clinical course are discussed.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This case highlights the course of an aggressive dento-alveolar infection in the immuno-compromised host. The need for early detection and urgent referral by the practitioner to minimize the risk of mortality an

Necrotizing fasciitis has conventionally been associated with the streptococci, and when it is caused by other organisms, it is most often the result of a polymicrobial infection. We report on two cases of fatal monomicrobial necrotizing fasciitis due to Acinetobacter baumannii, an unusual finding that may be an indication of enhanced virulence of the organism.

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis is a rare infection of the fascial planes, which is less common in head and neck, because of the rarity and higher vascularity in the region. We reviewed five patients with cervical necrotizing fasciitis of odontogenic infection managed at a teaching hospital at Chennai, India. There were four men and one woman, of whom four patients were diabetic and hypertensive, with a mean age of 53 years. Mandibular molars (periapical or pericoronal abscess) were found to be the source of infection in all of the cases. The treatment involved incision and drainage and debride

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a progressive, polymicrobial, potentially fatal soft tissue infection that can affect both sexes, all age groups and any anatomical region of the body. Identification of the offending microorganisms is important, since the eventual outcome of treatment is dependent on aggressive surgical, chemotherapeutic and supportive therapy.
AIM: To determine the spectrum of aerobic bacterial organisms responsible for NF in Sokoto, Northwestern Nigeria, and to establish a baseline for which further studies can be conducted.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 5-year prospect
