Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy associate with a PLN gene mutation in a child: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common hereditary disease of the myocardium, caused by mutations in at least 20 genes, encoding cardiac sarcomere proteins and sarcomere-associated proteins, while genes related to calcium metabolism, such as phospholamban (PLN), have been reported rarely, in less than 1% of positive patients. This study aims to report a unique case of child's HCM caused by a missense variant in the PLN gene on chromosome 6 (NM_002667.5:c.106T>C, p.Cys36Arg). This mutation in children, not previously reported in the literature except for an adult, expand the k

Parental socioeconomic and psychological determinants of the 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) vaccine uptake in children.

BACKGROUND: Before COVID-19, the previous pandemic was caused by influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus in 2009. Identification of factors behind parental decisions to have their child vaccinated against pandemic influenza could be helpful in planning of other pandemic vaccination programmes. We investigated the association of parental socioeconomic and psychosocial factors with uptake of the pandemic influenza vaccine in children in 2009-2010. METHODS: This study was conducted within a prospective birth-cohort study (STEPS Study), where children born in 2008-2010 are followed from pregnancy to adultho

Dog ownership practices and responsibilities for children's health in terms of rabies control and prevention in rural communities in Tanzania.

Interventions tackling zoonoses require an understanding of healthcare patterns related to both human and animal hosts. The control of dog-mediated rabies is a good example. Despite the availability of effective control measures, 59,000 people die of rabies every year worldwide. In Tanzania, children are most at risk, contributing ~40% of deaths. Mass dog vaccination can break the transmission cycle, but reaching the recommended 70% coverage is challenging where vaccination depends on willingness to vaccinate dogs. Awareness campaigns in communities often target children, but do not consider o

Recalled parental behavior of women and men with social anxiety disorder - The importance of the father-child relationship.

There is limited clarity in the research regarding sex-specific differences in Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). To address this gap, the current study focuses on examining sex-specific differences in sociodemographic factors and clinical impairment, as well as parenting behavior. The sample consisted of 425 women (39.0 ± 14.3 years) and 283 men (43.0 ± 14.0 years), all SCID-diagnosed with SAD. Both groups were compared regarding SAD symptom severity (Social Phobia Inventory; SPIN), comorbidities, current partnerhip, level of education and clinical impairment (suicidal thoughts, psychotherapeutic

Predicting coparenting quality in daily life in mothers and fathers.

The purpose of the current study was to examine contextual (daily relationship quality, daily stressors, daily work hours), parent (daily negative emotions, gender), and child factors (daily child-induced parenting stress) as predictors of mothers' and fathers' perceptions of daily coparenting quality. Mothers and fathers from 174 families completed a 14-day diary study. Utilizing multilevel modeling, our results suggest that daily coparenting is multidetermined. Indeed, daily fluctuations in coparenting were predicted by similar daily fluctuations in couple relationship quality, parent negati

Aggressivity among sons of substance-abusing fathers: association with psychiatric disorder in the father and son, paternal personality, pubertal development, and socioeconomic status.

An association between childhood aggression and risk for subsequent development of a substance abuse disorder is now well-accepted. In order to better understand the relationship between the presence of paternal substance abuse and aggression among their offspring, 10-12 year old sons of fathers with (n = 34) and without (n = 39) a history of a substance abuse disorder were contrasted on demographics, aggressivity, biological indices of reproductive maturation, and the presence of psychiatric diagnoses. In addition, personality factors, the potential for physical abuse, and psychiatric diagnos

Personality dynamics of adolescent boys where the father was absent.

The effects of substitute adult male role-models were examined for 60 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 years. Significant mean differences were found on Depression, Hypochondriasis, and Suspiciousness scales of the MMPI and Guilt and Assaultiveness of the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory. Interpretation of scores showed that fatherless boys who had substitute male role-models were similar in personality to boys with fathers. Adolescent boys without fathers and from lower socioeconomic families were significantly more similar in personality to young offenders.

Remembered parenting style and psychological well-being in young adults whose parents had experienced early child loss.

BACKGROUND: Pre-, peri-, or postnatal childloss can have devastating consequences for bereaved families. This study explored the long-term sequelae of these experiences for the young adult siblings' psychological well-being and the perceived quality of parenting received during participants' first 16 years of life. METHODS: A bereaved group of young adult siblings was compared to a non-bereaved group on the Parent Bonding Instrument, the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale and the Mental Health Index-5. RESULTS: The loss group reported their mothers, but not their fathers, to have been more protecti

Intranasal oxytocin increases fathers' observed responsiveness during play with their children: a double-blind within-subject experiment.

Recent correlational studies showed that oxytocin is associated with parenting style in humans as in other mammals. Here the first double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject experiment with intranasal oxytocin administration is presented. Subjects were 17 fathers with their toddler, observed in two play sessions of 15 min each with an intervening period of 1 week. In the oxytocin condition fathers were more stimulating of their child's exploration than in the placebo condition, and they tended to show less hostility. Parent training experiments might be combined with intranasal oxytocin

Children's and parent's psychological profiles in selective mutism and generalized anxiety disorder: a clinical study.

Selective mutism (SM) is classified in DSM-5 as an anxiety disorder. The aim of the study was to investigate the psychological features of children with SM and their parental psychological profiles, compared to generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) children and their parents. The parents of 26 preschool children with SM and 32 with children with GAD filled out the child behavior check list for 1½-5 years (CBCL1½-5) and the symptom checklist-90-revised (SCL-90-R). Information about the children and their parents' histories was collected through clinical interviews. Children with SM scored higher t

Parent-child cohesion, friend companionship and left-behind children's emotional adaptation in rural China.

Using cross-sectional data from rural left-behind children aged 10-17 years in the Henan Province of China, the present study examined the roles of father-child cohesion, mother-child cohesion, and friend companionship in emotional adaptation (loneliness, depression, and life satisfaction) among children left behind by both of their rural-to-urban migrant parents compared to those with only a migrating father. The results indicated that the children with two migrating parents were disadvantaged according to their demonstration of depression but not in loneliness or life satisfaction. Both pare

Intergenerational effects of childhood maltreatment: A systematic review of the parenting practices of adult survivors of childhood abuse, neglect, and violence.

A history of maltreatment in childhood may influence adults' parenting practices, potentially affecting their children. This systematic review examines 97 studies investigating associations of parental childhood victimization with a range of parenting behaviors that may contribute to the intergenerational effects of abuse: abusive parenting, problematic parenting, positive parenting, and positive parental affect. Key findings include: (1) parents who report experiencing physical abuse or witnessing violence in the home during childhood are at increased risk for reporting that they engage in ab

Maternal and paternal physical abuse: Unique and joint associations with child behavioral problems.

Although there is a substantial amount of literature documenting the relationship between child abuse and behavioral problems in China, there is, on the other hand, a limited number of studies on the joint and unique associations of maternal and paternal physical abuse with child behaviors within the Chinese context. The present study, using the family systems theory as the theoretical framework, aims to examine these joint and the unique associations of maternal and paternal physical abuse with externalizing and internalizing behaviors among a community sample of Chinese children. A total of

Positive socialization mechanisms in secure and insecure parent-child dyads: two longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND: Implications of early attachment have been extensively studied, but little is known about its long-term indirect sequelae, where early security organization moderates future parent-child relationships, serving as a catalyst for adaptive and maladaptive processes. Two longitudinal multi-trait multi-method studies examined whether early security amplified beneficial effects of children's willing, receptive stance toward the parent on socialization outcomes. METHODS: We examined parent-child early attachment organization, assessed in the Strange Situation at 14-15 months, as moderati

A Family of LBR Biallelic Pathogenic Variants Resulting in Rhizomelic Skeletal Dysplasia with Pelger-Huët Anomaly.

INTRODUCTION: The lamin-B receptor (LBR) gene has two primary functions: maintaining the structural integrity of the nuclear envelope and playing a role in cholesterol biosynthesis. Heterozygous variants in the LBR gene have been associated with Pelger-Huët anomaly (PHA, OMIM #169400), while homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations have been associated with rhizomelic skeletal dysplasia, with or without PHA (OMIM #618019) and Greenberg dysplasia (OMIM #215140). CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 4-year-old boy presenting with short stature and short limbs and his mother exhibiting milder fin
