Does sharing good news buffer fear of bad news? A daily diary study of fear of cancer recurrence in couples approaching the first mammogram post-diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: The core of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR)-a top concern of couples after successful breast cancer (BC) treatment-is fear of death. Daily relationship processes may be instrumental in regulating FCR as triggers of existential distress are encountered. We tested the hypothesis that daily capitalization, the process of sharing good news (capitalization attempts) to a partner perceived as responsive (responsiveness), buffers patient and spouse FCR as they confront the first mammogram post-diagnosis. METHODS: Fifty-seven early-stage BC survivors and their spouses reported daily FCR, c…

"We fear the police, and the police fear us": structural and individual barriers and facilitators to HIV medication adherence among injection drug users in Kiev, Ukraine.

Ukraine has one of the most severe HIV/AIDS epidemics in Europe, with an estimated 1.63% of the population living with HIV/AIDS in 2007. Injection drug use (IDU) remains the predominant mode of transmission in Kiev - the capital and largest city. Prior reports suggest that the HIV infection rate among IDUs in Kiev reaches 33%, and many have poor and inequitable access to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Among those with access to HAART, little is understood about barriers and facilitators to HAART medication adherence. In May 2009, two semi-structured focus groups were conducted w

Fear of humans mediates spatiotemporal interactions between endangered large Asian felids.

Species competitive interactions influence carnivore demography. Humans, as global 'super predators,' may mediate interactions among sympatric carnivores, although the effects of ecological fear on these interactions remain less understood. We used two years of camera trap data from more than 300 sites in northeast China to fit two-species, dynamic occupancy models. We then assessed how direct human passage affects spatial and temporal interactions between tigers and leopards, and the consequences for predator‒prey overlap in a temperate forest. We found evidence that median site occupancy, co…

A novel behavioral paradigm for innate predator fear memory in rats.

BACKGROUND: Understanding natural fear responses in rodents provides valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying stress and anxiety. NEW METHOD: In this study, we developed a novel behavioral paradigm to assess fear responses in Long-Evans rats using a combination of natural and artificial predator cues: coyote urine and a remote-controlled (RC) artificial snake. These cues were integrated into a two-choice compartment arena to evaluate ethologically relevant defensive behaviors, including avoidance, freezing, head-out risk assessment, and escape. RESULTS: The coyote odor alone produced…

Understanding developmental transitions of fear learning circuits: Insights from behavioral neuroscience.

Childhood is a period of peak developmental plasticity, involving drastic changes in the maturation of the neural circuitry underlying fear learning. Disruption and atypical development of fear learning are candidate mechanisms underlying child psychopathology. While there is a lack of understanding behind the maturation of fear learning systems in humans, rodent studies in this area delineate the normative development of fear learning systems early in life, and the effects of early threatening and fearful experiences on this developmental trajectory. Here, we review the rodent literature on d…

Sterol carrier protein 2 loss reduces anxiety and enhances fear extinction.

Brain endocannabinoid (eCB) signaling, which includes CB1 cannabinoid receptors (CB1R) and the eCBs N-arachidonoylethanolamine (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), modulates behavioral responses to stress and fear extinction. Sterol carrier protein 2 (SCP-2) is an intracellular lipid binding protein expressed in brain that binds AEA and 2-AG at nanomolar concentrations and facilitates their cellular accumulation. SCP-2 mRNA is present in mouse limbic brain regions and is increased in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and amygdalar complex in mice with impaired (129S1/Sv1mJ) fear extinction compa…

H2S alleviates fear condition-induced exacerbated colitis by promoting IgA production.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of psychological stress on colitis and the alleviating effects of H2S on colitis have been partially explored. However, the effects of panic on colitis and whether H2S can mitigate colitis exacerbated by psychological stress remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate whether fear condition exacerbates colitis and its underlying mechanisms, as well as whether H2S can alleviate colitis aggravated by psychological stress and the specific mechanisms involved. METHODS: We conducted fear condition modeling in DSS-induced colitis mice to examine whether fear…

Effective connectivity of face and fear processing in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME) exhibit impaired facial emotion perception, especially regarding fear. However, the underlying neural mechanisms remain to be fully understood. Particularly, the connectivity between emotion-related regions, such as the amygdala, and visual face-processing areas, specifically the Fusiform Face Area (FFA), appears to be relevant for typical facial fear processing. We therefore explored the effective connectivity within the FFA-amygdala network in JME. METHODS: Fourteen individuals diagnosed with JME and 14 healthy controls matched f…

Beyond Fear: Disgust, Anger, and the Affective Core of Interpersonal Phobias.

Interpersonal phobias-used here as an analytic label for enduring aversive orientations toward persons or groups, such as xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, racism, and ageism-are often framed primarily as fear- or anxiety-driven. That view captures vigilance and avoidance, but it does not fully explain why such aversions are also expressed in the language of contamination, revulsion, exclusion, social cleansing, and sometimes violence. I argue that interpersonal phobias are better understood through a distinction among fear, anger, and disgust than through a fear-centered account alone. Fea…

Individual differences in fear memory expression engage distinct functional brain networks.

Fearful stimuli elicit a mix of active (e.g., evasion) and passive (e.g., freezing) behaviors in a wide range of species, including zebrafish (Danio rerio). However, it is not clear if individual differences in fear responses exist and, if so, what parts of the brain may underlie such differences. To probe these questions, we developed a contextual fear conditioning paradigm for zebrafish that uses conspecific alarm substance (CAS) as an unconditioned stimulus where fish associate CAS administration with a specific tank. To identify individual differences, we collected behavioral responses fro…

Fear of hypoglycemia and disordered eating behavior in type 1 diabetes.

Individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are at elevated risk for disordered eating behaviors (DEBs). When DEBs occur in someone with T1D, they have severe consequences, including increased risk of diabetes-related medical complications and early mortality related to poor glycemic control. Fear of hypoglycemia (FoH) is a diabetes-specific factor that is assumed to play a role in DEBs in T1D, but this has not been adequately tested. The current study examined FoH as a predictor of DEBs in the natural environment in adults with T1D who met criteria for clinically significant DEBs. Participants (n …

Extinction of contextual fear memory is facilitated in TRPM2 knockout mice.

Transient receptor potential melastatin type 2 (TRPM2) is a nonselective cation channel involved in synaptic plasticity. We investigated its role in contextual fear conditioning and extinction of conditioned fear using Trpm2-deficient (Trpm2-/-) mice. Trpm2-/- mice exhibited reduced acquisition of contextual fear memory during conditioning but had an intact freezing response to conditioning context 24 h after conditioning. They also showed a reduced freezing response to extinction training, indicating facilitated extinction. Consistent with this, infusion of flufenamic acid (FFA), a TRPM2 anta…

Puberty, sex, and fear extinction retention: A neuroimaging study in youth.

Anxiety disorders affect 31.1 % of U.S. adults, with females exhibiting twice the prevalence of males. While sex differences are well-documented, underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Advanced pubertal status is linked to increased anxiety symptoms in females but not males, suggesting puberty contributes to sex differences in fear-based disorders. Deficits in fear extinction and retention are implicated in anxiety, and prior research suggests sex hormones influence extinction retention. This study examined sex assigned at birth (parent-reported) and pubertal status (self-reported) on extinctio…

Sex differences in BNST signaling and BNST CRF in fear processing.

Fear responses to perceived danger are critical for survival, as they prompt the individual to respond to threats and avoid harm. However, excessive fear can impede normal biological processes and become harmful. This study investigates the neural mechanisms underlying two distinct forms of fear-phasic and sustained-in male and female mice, with a focus on the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) signaling. Phasic fear is characterized by immediate responses to clear threats, while sustained fear is driven by ambiguous or uncertain cues and persis…

PACAP associated with precise PTSD and fear extinction response in women.

Behavioral, biological, and physiological reactions following posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are heterogeneous, particularly between sexes. Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP38) is identified as a viable sex-specific marker of PTSD and fear conditioning impairments in women. However, no studies have examined the association between PACAP38 and fear extinction in humans to inform treatment mechanisms, and the association between PACAP38 and PTSD is variable, requiring further investigation. Participants (n = 123) included representative proportions of women (48.8 %)…

Fear of ventricular tachycardia in Syncope: Clinical reasoning versus reflex alarmism.

Despite widespread concern, ventricular tachycardia (VT) is rarely the actual cause of syncope, even in patients with structural heart disease. Indeed sustained VT occurs, it typically results in cardiac arrest rather than transient loss of consciousness, with the exception of torsades de pointes. On the other hand when syncope is arrhythmic, it is more commonly due to atrioventricular (AV) block or sinus node dysfunction, age-related conditions due to conduction system fibrosis. We argue that current guideline-based risk stratification may overestimate arrhythmic and sudden death risk in pati
