Melanin is the primary pigment found in the skin, hair, wool and feathers of many vertebrates and plays a crucial role in determining the physical appearance and physiological performance of livestock species. Melanin functions in thermoregulation as well as coloration, photoprotection, and adaptation to diverse environmental conditions. This review examines the biosynthesis of melanin and the genetics of melanogenesis in major livestock species such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, and poultry, and the roles of melanin-based pigmentation within different systems of animal production. Th…

The greater rhea (Rhea americana), the largest bird species in South America, has significant economic value due to its meat, eggs, leather, feathers and oil. However, its lack of external sexual dimorphism poses challenges for reproductive management and breeding programmes. Key factors involved in avian gonadal differentiation include the cytochrome P450c17 (CYP17A1), P450 aromatase and the oestrogen receptor alpha (ERα). This study investigated the spatiotemporal immunolocalization of these proteins in germ and somatic cells of gonadal crests and developing gonads in R. americana embryos fr…

The illegal wildlife trade presents significant challenges to wildlife conservation due to its large impact on population and species persistence. Forensic technology plays an important role in detecting and prosecuting such trade but has lagged human forensics where trace genetic evidence is important in conviction or exoneration. At present, most genetic applications in wildlife forensics focus on identification of taxa or populations via tissue samples or visible trace material (e.g., blood, hair or feathers). However, enforcement officials may encounter common household objects that are su…

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an immune-mediated inflammatory lung disease triggered by the inhalation of environmental antigens. Bird fancier's lung is a common subtype, whereby the hypersensitivity reaction is triggered by exposure to avian proteins from bird feathers and droppings. This case describes a woman in her 20s, presenting at 16 weeks postpartum, with progressive dyspnoea, dry cough, and hypoxia. A thorough social history revealed significant exposure to a pigeon after the woman had rescued a pigeon from her cat and nursed it back to health during her third trimester. Comput…

This report describes an outbreak of type C botulism in two organic, free-range commercial layer farms in the Midwest. Hens affected were 64-wk-old Hy-Line brown hens and 34-wk-old Hy-Line brown hens owned by the same company, but housed on different premises, with approximately 20,000 birds per house. Mortality over the 2 wk of investigation was estimated to be up to 8% and 2.8%, respectively, with birds acting listless, lethargic, and depressed. Clinical signs consisted of progressive paralysis, and severely affected birds were moribund and laterally recumbent. Hens had ruffled feathers that…

Accurate detection of West Nile virus (WNV) in corvids is essential for monitoring the spread of virus during the mosquito season. Viremia in corvids is very high, with titers approaching 10(8) viral particles/ml. In the presence of such marked viremia, the sensitivity of real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis is unnecessary, and more cost-effective methods should be assessed. To this end, antigen-capture ELISA (ACE) and immunohistochemical (IHC) assays were evaluated. Skin, cloacal swab specimens, and feathers from corvids were tested by use of ACE, and re…

An 18-year-old female patient was referred with complaints of tearing and redness in the left eye for 3 months after a mild ocular trauma with a turkey feather. She was treated with topical antibiotics and corticosteroids with no improvement. Slit-lamp examination of the left eye showed a vascularized lesion with a polypoidal appearance due to multiple contiguous micronodules on the temporal and inferior bulbar conjunctiva. Results of the anterior and posterior segment examination were unremarkable in both eyes. A biopsy specimen of the conjunctival mass showed multiple tuberculoid granulomas

OBJECTIVE: Several classification systems for Reinke's edema have been proposed in the past, which are somewhat less than morphologically ideal. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the ability of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to attain a reproducible graduation of Reinke's edema.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a prospective study, 30 consecutive patients underwent endolaryngeal, microsurgical resection of their Reinke's edema. Graduation was performed through OCT based on morphologic criteria, where each result was compared with that of other classification systems.
RESULTS: In

Avian embryos, which have been studied scientifically since Aristotle, continue to persevere as invaluable research tools, especially for our understanding of the development and evolution of the craniofacial skeleton. Whether the topic is beak shape in Darwin's finches or signaling interactions that underlie bone and tooth formation, birds offer advantages for craniofacial biology that uniquely complement the strengths of other vertebrate model systems, such as fish, frogs, and mice. Several papers published during the past few years have helped pinpoint molecular and cellular mechanisms that

A 12-yr-old female Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura victoria), acquired from a private aviculturalist, was diagnosed with a flea infestation during a quarantine examination. The fleas were embedded around the face and throat and were identified as sticktight fleas (Echidnophaga gallinacea). Despite the sticktight fleas' worldwide distribution and broad host range, there is a paucity of reports on flea infestations and their treatment in zoo and exotic pet birds. Although this parasite has the potential to induce morbidity and mortality, no feather loss, localized dermatitis, or anemia was noted

A male chicken heterozygous for a gene for sex-linked imperfect albinism (s(al)-c) was used to produce offspring in five dam families. The DNA from 23 offspring (22 females and 1 male) was cut with the restriction enzyme Sac1 and hybridized with a Rous-Associated Virus-2 probe to test for linkage between the gene and endogenous viral (ev) genes. In a second experiment, 15 albino and 15 nonalbino females resulting from 4 males mated to 11 females were studied with the enzymes Sac1 and BamHI. In the first experiment, 10 different ev genes were seen. These, plus seven additional bands were seen i

Low crude protein (LCP) diets supplemented with essential amino acids may reduce the environmental impact of poultry production, whereas high-fiber diets containing increased insoluble non-starch polysaccharides (iNSP) may improve hen welfare by reducing feather and injurious pecking. To investigate the effects of these dietary strategies on laying hens, a total of 1,600 sixteen-week-old Bovans Robust White hens were randomly assigned to 16 pens and fed experimental diets from 16 to 50 weeks of age in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with two crude protein levels (standard, SCP; low, LCP) and two

BACKGROUND: Domestic goose breeds are descended from either the Swan goose (Anser cygnoides) or the Greylag goose (Anser anser), exhibiting variations in body size, reproductive performance, egg production, feather color, and other phenotypic traits. Constructing a pan-genome facilitates a thorough identification of genetic variations, thereby deepening our comprehension of the molecular mechanisms underlying genetic diversity and phenotypic variability.
RESULTS: To comprehensively facilitate population genomic and pan-genomic analyses in geese, we embarked on the task of 659 geese whole geno

An 80-year-old woman with a history of endoscopic balloon dilation for esophageal stricture caused by accidental ingestion of caustic soda during infancy presented with dysphagia. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a 10-cm-long, highly white, elevated lesion with a feathered appearance. This lesion was determined to be the cause of dysphagia and was completely resected via endoscopic submucosal dissection. Histopathological examination revealed a thick keratin layer on the surface of the stratified squamous epithelium, with a prominent granular layer underneath and some areas showing nu

Ecological theory traditionally predicts that interspecific competition selects for an increase in ecological specialization. Specialization, in turn, is often thought to be an evolutionary 'dead end,' with specialist lineages unlikely to evolve into generalist lineages. In host-parasite systems, this specialization can take the form of host specificity, with more specialized parasites using fewer hosts. We tested the hypothesis that specialists are evolutionarily more derived, and whether competition favours specialization, using the ectoparasitic feather lice of doves. Phylogenetic analyses
