C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), belonging to the natriuretic peptide group, has recently emerged as a potential modulator of feeding behavior in mammalian species. This study aimed to examine the impact of central infusion of CNP-22 on feeding behavior in neonatal broilers and to elucidate its interaction with the dopaminergic, malanocortinergic, and neuropeptide Y (NPY) systems. Across ten separate experiments, broilers were systematically allocated into four different treatment groups for each experiment. In the initial experiment, neonatal chickens (Ross-308) received ICV injections of sa…

Rett syndrome (RTT) is an X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutation of the methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene. Although RTT has been associated with obesity, the underlying mechanism has not yet been elucidated. In this study, female heterozygous Mecp2-null mice (Mecp2+/- mice), a model of RTT, were fed a normal chow diet or high-fat diet (HFD), and the changes in molecular signaling pathways were investigated. Specifically, we examined the expression of genes related to the hypothalamus and dopamine reward circuitry, which represent a central network of feeding behavior c…

In order to better understand the relationship of free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations to feed intake in laying hens, plasma levels of catecholamine, glucose, and FFA and plasma monoamine oxidase activity were measured. Blood samples were taken in the morning before and after the start of feeding via chronic brachial vein catheters. Plasma concentrations of epinephrine and norepinephrine were analyzed by modified HPLC with an electrochemical detection method. Plasma concentrations of FFA and glucose were not significantly different before and after the start of feeding, however a negative corr

Variation in nutritional profile and availability of high-quality forages remain primary challenges for efficient heifer rearing on a forage-based diet. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of limit feeding forage-free diet on growth performance, feed efficiency, blood metabolites, behavior, health, and mammary parenchyma of prepubertal dairy heifers. Sixteen prepubertal heifers (Body weight = 168 ± 32Kg) divided into 8 pens (2 heifers/pen) were used in a completely randomized design (n = 4 pen/treatment) to compare the effect of a diet containing 20% forage with a forage-free diet. Limit f

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of delivering feed and detecting estrous behavior by computer-controlled equipment in a nonconfinement environment. In Exp. 1, gilts were assigned to treatment when detected pregnant by ultrasound at 30 to 35 d after artificial insemination. They were assigned to be fed individually in stalls once/day (0830) with a scoop (controls, n = 20) or with an electronic sow feeding station (ESF, n = 20). The ESF gilts received their feed in 98.6-g aliquots at 80-s intervals as they visited the feeding station. Control vs ESF gilts did n

The mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system is involved in the regulation of multiple behaviors, including feeding, and evidence demonstrates that the melanocortin system can act on the mesolimbic DA system to control feeding and other behaviors. The melanocortin-3 receptor (MC3R) is an important component of the melanocortin system, but its overall role is poorly understood. Because MC3Rs are highly expressed in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and are likely to be the key interaction point between the melanocortin and mesolimbic DA systems, we set out to identify both the efferent projection pattern

The drivers of plant dispersal and distribution are poorly understood. For nut-bearing trees, interactions between seeds and caching granivores can have a strong influence on population dynamics as unrecovered caches often recruit new trees. Granivore-seed interactions may be constrained by predators as fear alters caching and foraging behavior. We investigated how predation risk affects caching and foraging behavior in fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) and subsequent recruitment patterns of American turkey oak (Quercus laevis) acorns. We marked and tracked acorns to locate fox squirrel cache and

In primates, food sharing from mothers to infants may serve two main functions: supporting offspring nutritional needs (nutritional hypothesis) and facilitating the acquisition of dietary knowledge, such as what and how to eat (informational hypothesis). We investigated these hypotheses in a wild population of bearded capuchin monkeys Sapajus libidinosus, at Fazenda Boa Vista, Brazil. We analyzed 194 h of footage of 10 infants filmed over their first 18 months of life using focal animal sampling. Mothers shared food exclusively in response to infant solicitation, with solicitation events obser

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases are the leading global cause of death, largely driven by Western lifestyles characterized by poor diets and physical inactivity. Digital interventions offer promising tools to support health behavior change. Interactive conversational agents (CAs) provide real-time, personalized meal planning and dietary advice. Their interactive nature and adaptability make them valuable for promoting healthy dietary behaviors in the context of diet-related chronic diseases. However, evidence of their effectiveness remains limited. Systematic evaluations of their impact, features,

Large-bodied, top- and apex predators (e.g., crocodilians, sharks, wolves, killer whales) can exert strong top-down effects within ecological communities through their interactions with prey. Due to inherent difficulties while studying the behavior of these often dangerous predatory species, relatively little is known regarding their feeding behaviors and activity patterns, information that is essential to understanding their role in regulating food web dynamics and ecological processes. Here we use animal-borne imaging systems (Crittercam) to study the foraging behavior and activity patterns …

The data reported by Nizhnikov et al. [Newborn rats first suckling experience: taste differentiation and suckling plasticity (2002)] do not support the authors' claim that they shed light on suckling mechanisms. A number of accepted criteria for identifying suckling are discussed in this review. The ingestion of various fluids through a plastic tube by neonatal or other rats does not meet any of these criteria. Thus, while the data reported by Nizhnikov et al. [Newborn rats first suckling experience: taste differentiation and suckling plasticity (2002)] are of interest from the perspective of

Investigations were performed regarding the length of rest, sucking and feeding and the daily rhythm of these activities in calves kept with their mothers on pasture or in stables and the motility of the calves. Length of rest and feeding in breeding calves kept in groups and length of rest and sucking in breeding and fattening calves (automatic feeding and bucket feeding) were examined too. The examinations were performed starting from the morning feeding to the end of the day over a period of appr. 10.5 to 12 hours. During this time, calves 2--4 weeks of age ran about 550,7 m, 6--8 weeks of

This study evaluated the combined effects of flooring type and perch cooling on broiler growth performance, meat quality, and behavior under high ambient temperature conditions. In a 3 × 2 factorial design, 234 male Ross 308 broilers were reared on plastic-grid flooring (PF), zeolite-amended litter (Z), or wood shavings (WS), with cooled or non-cooled perches. Performance was recorded per pen; meat quality traits were measured individually and analyzed using pen means; behavior was assessed using video-based scan sampling. Flooring type affected body weight only at 7 d of age (P = 0.037), wher

The effects of metoclopramide and thioridazine on feeding behaviors of male hooded rats were investigated in 2 experiments. Metoclopramide (2.5-7.5 mg/kg) attenuated conditioned preparatory responses to a conditional stimulus signaling delivery of a meal. However, consummatory responses were affected only by the highest dose. Similar effects had previously been observed following administration of pimozide (Blackburn, Phillips, & Fibiger, 1987). Thioridazine (10-30 mg/kg) had no significant effect on any measure of feeding behavior. The different effects of the 2 drugs may be related to their …

Obesity is a multifactorial disease associated with metabolic dysfunction and the prevention and treatment of obesity are often unsatisfactory. Transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that has proven promising in the treatment of eating disorders such as obesity. We investigate the effects of tDCS on locomotor and exploratory activities, anxiety-like and feeding behavior, and levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), IL (interleukin)-10, IL-1β, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in the cerebral cortex of obese rats. A total of…

Visual scanning at 15-min intervals was used to monitor effects of shade forms and weather types on corral activities of cows. The method allowed one person to observe several dozen cows in a large pen, regardless of grouping pattern. Complete ration eating between 0600 and 1800 h was reduced 13% during hot weather, as compared to cool weather in unshaded corrals or pens with 4-m wide solid strip shades and unprotected manger . Hot afternoon fresh-feed eating response was reduced in comparison to cool weather 14% for unshaded corrals and 46% for strip shaded corrals having unprotected mangers
