BACKGROUND: Postabdominal intestinal surgery (PAIS) infants pose many complex management issues. Utilization of feeding guidelines has been shown to improve outcomes in preterm and low-birth-weight infants. We propose that standardization of feeding for PAIS infants is safe.
METHODS: We identified 163 PAIS infants: 93 prior to and 70 after implementation of a feeding guideline. The primary outcome was time to full enteral nutrition (EN). A propensity score-matched analysis was performed.
RESULTS: The preimplementation and postimplementation PAIS infants were similar at baseline. No significa

Iron deficiency in infants can impact development, and there are concerns that the use of baby food pouches and baby-led weaning may impair iron status. First Foods New Zealand (FFNZ) was an observational study of 625 New Zealand infants aged 6.9 to 10.1 months. Feeding methods were defined based on parental reports of infant feeding at "around 6 months of age": "frequent" baby food pouch use (five+ times per week) and "full baby-led weaning" (the infant primarily self-feeds). Iron status was assessed using a venepuncture blood sample. The estimated prevalence of suboptimal iron status was 23%…

PURPOSE: Formula feeding, tobacco use, and family history have been well-established as risk factors for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS). Several markers of socioeconomic status have also been associated with HPS, however, their relationship to other risk factors has not been delineated. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between socioeconomic factors and known risk factors for HPS.
METHODS: We identified 735 patients who underwent pyloromyotomy at a high-volume children's hospital between 2012 and 2025. These patients were matched one-to-one by sex, gestational

BACKGROUND: Healthy eating is essential throughout childhood and adolescence, and has been associated with better health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Healthy eating results from complex interactions, including the transmission of eating habits within families. Although parental feeding practices may influence children's HRQoL through several plausible behavioral pathways, empirical evidence examining this association remains limited. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the association between parental feeding practices-monitoring, pressure-to-eat, and restriction-and

BACKGROUND: Sheep feeding systems strongly influence meat quality, animal health, and production efficiency. Grazing improves fatty acid composition and sustainability but limits productivity, whereas concentrate feeding enhances efficiency but may induce oxidative stress. Vitamin E (VE), a key antioxidant, may mitigate these effects; however, systematic multi-tissue molecular evidence remains limited.
METHODS: We performed an integrative transcriptomic analysis across liver, muscle, and subcutaneous fat. In Experiment 1, grazing and confinement systems were compared to identify cross-tissue

Background/Objectives: Protein-energy malnutrition is common in children with congenital heart disease (CHD) due to increased metabolic demand and limited oral intake capacity. Achieving adequate protein intake in this population through oral feeding remains a critical yet underexplored challenge. This review aims to synthesize the currently available evidence on protein requirements, barriers to oral intake, and strategies for optimization of protein delivery in children with CHD. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science. Relevant observationa

BACKGROUND: There has been a renewed focus on offering commercial formulas made with real-food ingredients because of their perceived health benefits, such as improved feeding tolerance and gut health. Children receiving enteral nutrition through these formulas often are fed via feeding pumps. Because these formulas vary in thickness, we aimed to explore the relationship between formula thickness and prescribed formula delivery via feeding pumps. We hypothesized that inaccurate volumes of commercial blenderized formula (CBF) are delivered via feeding pumps and that these inaccuracies are direc

BACKGROUND Patients with dysphagia due to stroke may require enteral feeding using either a nasogastric (NG) feeding tube or a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube. This study aimed to compare outcomes from NG tube and PEG tube feeding in 40 patients with severe dysphagia due to stroke. MATERIAL AND METHODS We enrolled 40 patients admitted to the hospital from April 2019 to December 2022 due to severe stroke dysphagia, who were divided into the gastrostomy group (20 patients) and the nasogastric feeding group (20 patients) in accordance with the random number table method. BACKGROUND: Treatment of antenatal corticosteroids (ACSs) to women at risk of preterm labor can decrease neonatal mortality and morbidity. However, effect of ACS exposure on enteral feeding and body growth of preterm infants remains elusive.
METHODS: This retrospective study collected information of eligible singleton infants born between 22+0 and 36+6 weeks' gestation from 2017 to 2019. Logistic regression and multivariate linear regression were adopted to examine the associations of the ACS exposure with various outcomes of enteral feeding and growth considering potential confounders. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate whether early feeding after cesarean delivery (CD) shortens the time to pass flatus and bowel movement.
METHODS: Women at term undergoing CD were randomly assigned to start oral intake either within 6 hours (early feeding) or after 12 hours (late feeding) from surgery completion. Women with preeclampsia, or requiring emergent CD, additional bowel surgery, or the use of general anesthesia were excluded. Our primary outcome was time of passing first flatus following surgery completion. Secondary outcomes included time of first bowel sounds, time of first b

INTRODUCTION: Prevention of Mother-To-Child-Transmission (PMTCT) of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) guideline recommends replacement feeding where it is acceptable, feasible, affordable, sustainable and safe. Where this is un-achievable, exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is recommended during the first six months of life.
METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 600 HIV-positive using a two-stage sampling technique. Data on socio-demographics, infant feeding choice and factors influencing these choices were collected using semi-structured questionnaires.
RESULTS: Ma

BACKGROUND: Estimated effects of breast-feeding on childhood health vary between studies, possibly due to confounding by baseline maternal and child characteristics. Possible time-dependent confounding has received little consideration. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of such confounding.
METHODS: We estimated the relationship between cumulative exclusive breast-feeding up to 6 months and wheezing, rash and body mass index (BMI) at 12 months [in the Whistler cohort (n = 494) and PROBIT (n = 11,463)], and wheezing, rash, asthma, hay fever, eczema, allergy and BMI at age 6.5 years (PROBIT).

AIMS: Alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) presents as decreased myocardial contractility, arrhythmias and secondary non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy leading to heart failure. Mitochondrial dysfunction is known to have a significant role in the development and complications of ACM. This study investigated if chronic ethanol feeding promoted myocardial mitochondrial topoisomerase dysfunction as one underlying cause of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage and mitochondrial dysfunction in ACM.
METHODS: The impact of chronic ethanol exposure on the myocardial mitochondria was examined in both neonatal c

BACKGROUND: Feeding tube placement in patients with aero-digestive cancer is challenging because of the distortion and/or obstruction of the upper digestive passage. As a result, many patients may receive intravenous fluids and parenteral nutrition instead of enteral feeds.
AIM: To audit all the endoscopic feeding tube placements in large sample of patients to determine difficulties, success, reasons for failures and procedure-related complications.
METHODS: Audit of all consecutive feeding tube placements from January 1996 to December 2003 was conducted. Tubes were placed depending on the s
