[Comparison of the transplacental effect of luminal and epileptic seizures in pregnant rabbits on the development of the fetal nervous system].

The aim of the study was to compare the effect of phenobarbital given to pregnant rabbits and of epileptic seizures on the course of pregnancy, the physical state, and central nervous system development of newborns. Phenobarbital was given orally during whole pregnancy or for the last ten days in amounts 18,5 mg/kg/body weight = 0,1 DL 50. Seizures of "grand mal" type were evoked with electrostimulator every day since the tenth day of pregnancy. Phenobarbital penetrates via placenta, reaches the organs of all fetuses, and seizures provoke hypoxaemia of fetuses. Phenobarbital administered durin

Pattern Recognition and Anomaly Detection in fetal morphology using Deep Learning and Statistical learning (PARADISE): protocol for the development of an intelligent decision support system using fetal morphology ultrasound scan to detect fetal congenital anomaly detection.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital anomalies are the most encountered cause of fetal death, infant mortality and morbidity. 7.9 million infants are born with congenital anomalies yearly. Early detection of congenital anomalies facilitates life-saving treatments and stops the progression of disabilities. Congenital anomalies can be diagnosed prenatally through morphology scans. A correct interpretation of the morphology scan allows a detailed discussion with the parents regarding the prognosis. The central feature of this project is the development of a specialised intelligent system that uses two-dimens

Learning deep architectures for the interpretation of first-trimester fetal echocardiography (LIFE) - a study protocol for developing an automated intelligent decision support system for early fetal echocardiography.

BACKGROUND: Congenital Heart Disease represents the most frequent fetal malformation. The lack of prenatal identification of congenital heart defects can have adverse consequences for the neonate, while a correct prenatal diagnosis of specific cardiac anomalies improves neonatal care neurologic and surgery outcomes. Sonographers perform prenatal diagnosis manually during the first or second-trimester scan, but the reported detection rates are low. This project's primary objective is to develop an Intelligent Decision Support System that uses two-dimensional video files of cardiac sweeps obtain

The Evolving Paradigm of Autism: Folate Receptor Autoimmunity deranging Epigenetic Programming in fetal and postnatal Brain Development.

This review on autism provides a summary of the multiple genetic, epigenetic and environmental changes setting the stage for disturbed brain development due to aberrant synaptogenesis and corticogenesis during the prenatal and post-natal periods. The emphasis is placed on nonmendelian transmission driven by epigenetics. Folate deficiency appears to play a critical role in influencing many of the structural changes contributing to developmental deficits. Impaired passage of folate across the placental and the blood-brain barriers to the fetal and postnatal brain because of folate receptor autoa

Single-Cell Atlas of Fetal Immune Development Across Lung, Spleen, and Umbilical Cord Blood in Nonhuman Primates.

The fetal immune system develops within a tightly regulated environment that balances immune tolerance with readiness for postnatal antigen exposure. However, limited access to fetal tissues has constrained our understanding of immune ontogeny across distinct anatomical compartments. Here, we present a high-resolution, multi-tissue single-cell transcriptional atlas of the late-gestation (GD130-135) rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) fetal immune system, profiling leukocytes from lung, spleen, and umbilical cord blood mononuclear cell (UCBMC) compartments spanning myeloid, lymphoid, innate lymphoi

Ultrasound-guided selective occlusion of uteroplacental canal vessels in the mouse alters fetal growth and placental development.

Placental insufficiency associated with impaired uteroplacental blood flow is the leading cause of human fetal growth restriction. While preclinical studies have examined the effects of global reductions in uterine blood flow, the downstream consequences of a focal disruption in flow remains unknown. We investigate how murine maternal canal occlusion(s) impacts placental development and fetal growth. Pregnant CD-1 mice at embryonic (E) day 15.5 underwent abdominal surgery to exteriorize the uterus. Under ultrasound guidance, zero, one or two of the, typically three, placental canals were micro

Chronic Latent Magnesium Deficiency and an Unbalanced Calcium-to-Magnesium Ratio Impact Fetal Development and Maternal Health.

During pregnancy, a mother experiences increased metabolic demands to meet the needs of the fetus. A mismatch between these demands and nutrient intake can result in a host of developmental abnormalities to the fetus and health risks to the mother. Several studies have reported strong correlations between deficiency of the essential mineral, magnesium (Mg), and many pregnancy complications, including intrauterine growth restriction, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and preterm delivery. Mg also impacts fetal programming and disease presentation in childhood and adulthood, showing that aberr

Circular RNAs mediate the regulation of maternal placental nutrient transport and fetal development by sugar-sweetened beverages.

Epidemiological and experimental studies have demonstrated a strong association between maternal diet and fetal birth weight, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. We investigated the pathways and modes of action of circular RNAs (circRNAs) that mediate the regulation of maternal reproductive performance and fetal development by sugar-sweetened beverages (20 % sucrose water, SSBs) using C57BL/6J mice as a model. Results showed that SSBs significantly increased the reproductive performance (P<0.05), body weight (P<0.01), fetal birth weight (P<0.05), placental weight (P<0.01), and the expression of n…

Midline structures and cortical development in late-onset fetal growth restriction according to Doppler status: prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Fetuses with late-onset growth restriction (FGR) have a higher risk of suboptimal neurocognitive performance after birth. Previous studies have reported that impaired brain and cortical development can start in utero. The primary aim of this study was to report midline structure growth and cortical development in fetuses with late-onset FGR according to its severity; the secondary aim was to elucidate whether the severity of FGR, as defined by the presence of abnormal Doppler findings, plays a role in affecting brain growth and maturation. METHODS: This was a prospective observati

UTX deficiency in neural stem/progenitor cells results in impaired neural development, fetal ventriculomegaly, and postnatal death.

Recent studies have demonstrated that epigenetic modifications are deeply involved in neurogenesis; however, the precise mechanisms remain largely unknown. To determine the role of UTX (also known as KDM6A), a demethylase of histone H3K27, in neural development, we generated Utx-deficient mice in neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs). Since Utx is an X chromosome-specific gene, the genotypes are sex-dependent; female mice lose both Utx alleles (UtxΔ/Δ ), and male mice lose one Utx allele yet retain one Uty allele, the counterpart of Utx on the Y chromosome (UtxΔ/Uty ). We found that UtxΔ/Δ mice

Regional brain development in fetuses with Dandy-Walker malformation: A volumetric fetal brain magnetic resonance imaging study.

Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is a common prenatally diagnosed cerebellar malformation, characterized by cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, upward rotation of the hypoplastic vermis, and posterior fossa enlargement with torcular elevation. DWM is associated with a broad spectrum of neurodevelopmental abnormalities such as cognitive, motor, and behavioral impairments, which cannot be explained solely by cerebellar malformations. Notably, the pathogenesis of these symptoms remains poorly understood. This study investigated whether fetal structural developmental abnormalities in DWM ext

Accelerated loss of oogonia and impaired folliculogenesis in females with Turner syndrome start during early fetal development.

STUDY QUESTION: How are germ cell numbers and initiation of folliculogenesis affected in fetal Turner syndrome (TS) ovaries? SUMMARY ANSWER: Germ cell development was severely affected already in early second trimester pregnancies, including accelerated oogonia loss and impaired initiation of primordial follicle formation in TS ovaries, while the phenotype in TS mosaic ovaries was less severe. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Females with TS are characterized by premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). This phenotype is proposed to be a consequence of germ cell loss during development, but the timing an

Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia: Implications and Impact in Pregnancy, Fetal Development, and Early Childhood Parameters.

A normal pregnancy consumes 500-800 mg of iron from the mother. Premenopausal women have a high incidence of marginal iron stores or iron deficiency (ID), with or without anemia, particularly in the less developed world. Although pregnancy is associated with a "physiologic" anemia largely related to maternal volume expansion; it is paradoxically associated with an increase in erythrocyte production and erythrocyte mass/kg. ID is a limiting factor for this erythrocyte mass expansion and can contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes. This review summarizes erythrocyte and iron balance observed in

In utero MRI identifies consequences of early-gestation alcohol drinking on fetal brain development in rhesus macaques.

One factor that contributes to the high prevalence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is binge-like consumption of alcohol before pregnancy awareness. It is known that treatments are more effective with early recognition of FASD. Recent advances in retrospective motion correction for the reconstruction of three-dimensional (3D) fetal brain MRI have led to significant improvements in the quality and resolution of anatomical and diffusion MRI of the fetal brain. Here, a rhesus macaque model of FASD, involving oral self-administration of 1.5 g/kg ethanol per day beginning prior to pregnanc
