An assessment of detection canine alerts using flowers that release methyl benzoate, the cocaine odorant, and an evaluation of their behavior in terms of the VOCs produced.

In recent years, the high frequency of illicit substance abuse reported in the United States has made the development of efficient and rapid … the active odor of cocaine, has been found to be the most abundant compound produced by snapdragon flowers. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the odor profiles of various species of snapdragon flowers to assess how significantly methyl benzoate contributes to the total VOC profile or fragrance that is produced. Particularly, this study …

Complex rearrangements lead to novel chimeric gene fusion polymorphisms at the Arabidopsis thaliana MAF2-5 flowering time gene cluster.

Tandem gene clusters of multigene families are rearrangement hotspots and may be a major source of novel gene formation. Here, we report on a molecular population genetic analysis of the MAF2-5 gene cluster of the model plant species, Arabidopsis thaliana. The MAF2-5 genes are a MADS-box multigene family cluster spanning approximately 24 kbp on chromosome 5. We find heterogeneous evolutionary dynamics among these genes, all of which are closely related to the floral repressor, FLC, and are believed to play a role in the control of flowering time in A. thaliana. Low levels of nonsynonymous sing

Endogenous alpha-ketol linolenic acid levels in short day-induced cotyledons are closely related to flower induction in Pharbitis nil.

Alpha-ketol linolenic acid [KODA, 9,10-ketol-octadecadienoic acid, that is 9-hydroxy-10-oxo-12(Z),15(Z)-octadecadienoic acid] is a signal compound found in Lemna paucicostata after exposure to stress, such as drought, heat or osmotic stress. KODA reacts with catecholamines to generate products that strongly induce flowering, although KODA itself is inactive [Yokoyama et al. (2000) Plant Cell Physiol. 41: 110; Yamaguchi et al. (2001) Plant Cell Physiol. 42: 1201]. We examined the role of KODA in the flower-induction process of Pharbitis nil (violet). KODA was identified for the first time in se

Effects of flowering plant's patch size on species composition of pollinator communities, foraging strategies, and resource partitioning in bumblebees (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

In 4 common Middle-European mainly bumblebee-pollinated plant species (Impatiens glandulifera, Echium vulgare, Aconitum napellus, Symphytum officinale) the influence of patch size on species composition of the pollinator community was studied. Short-tongued species were most dominant in large patches, while small patches were frequented by middle- and long-tongued bumblebees. This phenomenon was extremely obvious in Symphytum officinale and Aconitum napellus, where short-tongued species had bitten a hole in nearly every flower of large patches. Long-tongued species were forced to small patches

Pollinators in Blackcurrant Orchards: Complementary Roles of Sown and Spontaneous Flower Strips and Limited Spillover of Small Wild Bees Within Fields.

Agricultural intensification threatens pollinators and associated ecosystem services through pesticide use and the loss and fragmentation of natural habitats. Sowing flower strips and preserving spontaneous flowers are commonly recommended practices to support pollinators within fields. However, their effectiveness remains variable across studies and pollinator morphogroups, and their influence on pollinator activity is poorly studied in several crops, particularly in blackcurrant. Here, we studied flowering plant communities (sown and spontaneous) and four pollinator morphogroups (Bombus, lar…
